It's one thing it was the OC job at South Carolina. But TE coach in CFB is on the lower end of totem pole for top assistant coach. But even then as you said, it's ***ed up to just up and leave after practices began.

Oh that part is definitely bad, don’t get it twisted. If he did this right after the season, I would still feel the same way.

I don’t even think firing him would be on the table for a school like Georgia State. They have no expectations from people here so as long as he kept them around .500/bowl eligible he would’ve been good.

His new contract with uSC is also less than what he was making as HC at Georgia State. Like others said though, the writing could have been on the wall, and this gives him 3 more years of guaranteed salary at close to what he was making at GSU. GSU isn't competing for championships, but the record the last 2 years hasn't been great

He also has some pretty close ties to Columbia His family has apparently remained in Columbia ever since he was on Steve Spurrier's staff back in 2015. All of this is speculation, but if you're looking for a good reason for him to take make the move then that is probably it.

The perfect number is 8. They skipped that and went from 4 to 12, and now they're discussing 14 instead of 16 (both are way too many).
