Re: NHL 2023 Offseason

Canucks buying out OEL just 2 years after he was traded there.

Still has 4 years at 8.25m cap hit (7.26m from Canucks).

A longer cap hit with the buyout from them.

Under 150k next year, 2.3m the the year after, 4.7m the next 2, then 2.1m the final 4 years for the Canucks. So 8 years total cap hit.

Despite that, it still wasn't a bad deal for them. Garland is looking decent for them, although Guenther would've been nice to have.

Avs get Ryan Johansen at 50% for basically nothing.

Motivated Johansen is amazing, but that only shows up like 5% of the time. MacFarland and Bednar's love for former CBJ guys continues.

Re: NHL 2023 Offseason

Hall: Here's my my 16 team no trade list, I don't want to be traded to those teams.

Bruins: OK, you're off to Chicago.

Hall: Wait, can I add a 17th team?

Bruins apparently dealt Hall who has a limited NTC to the Hawks because they're not on that list, and didn't inform him. Not that he could object to it, but this was entirely a cap dump move so they were getting rid of him one way or another.

Hawks will still suck next year, but what a top line with Hall and Bedard....or do the Hawks just flip Hall asap, retain a quarter or half his salary (so 1.5-3m cap hit they retain meaning someone else pays 3-4.5m) and get a bigger return for him.

If his NTC is still in effect, that means there's limited options, but if it gets waived due to the trade (usually teams have the option to not honour the ntc of a player they acquire), they could force him to some other team who originally couldn't have dealt with the Bruins.

Re: NHL 2023 Offseason

Dubois to Kings
Toffoli to Devils

I'm willing to bet no Canadian team wins the cup next year either.

Speaking of Canadian teams, the NHL has allowed Treliving to join the Leafs draft table after the Flames make their 1st round pick. Because who knows the issues it could cause if he shows up 30 minutes earlier? He doesn't have a cellphone? He doesn't speak to anyone in the Leafs organization before the draft?

Not sure what difference it makes if he's there from pick 1 or pick 16.

Oilers aren't far off. If Edmonton doesn't win one in the next 2-3 seasons, it'll probably be another 30 years (by which point Canada will likely be annexed by the US anyway).

The Leafs will be the next Canadian team to win the cup.

Only issue is that this will probably never happen so...

Red Wings have 5 of the first 43 picks in the draft.

I say they should keep trading down and accumulating draft assets so that in the 2028 NHL draft, they have every single pick in the first round.

Of course you had to have the fresh prince theme play when the Sharks drafted Will Smith
