Re: NHL 2023 Offseason

My plan for the Leafs:
Let UFAs Kerfoot, Kampf, Bunting, Simmonds, Aston Reese, Holl, Gustafsson all go.

Re-sign O'Reilly, Acciari, Samsonov (for one year if cheap).

Trade Marner

Trade Murray or buy him out if you can't dump him for a real low price (anything more than the 3rd and 7th picks we got for taking him on isn't worth it)

Go all out trying to get a star goalie (even if lots of your return for Marner gets flipped for that goalie).

Fire Keefe and most of his assistant coaches and DON'T promote from within (keep Dubas and Shanahan)

With Muzzin on LTIR, they have about 13m in space. Buy out Murray and that's now that's 17m in cap space with 7F, 6D, 1G under contract. Most of those 7F are bottom 6 guys who should all cost under 2m.

Factor in trading Marner which frees up enough cap space to add a top 6 forward, and gives you assets to flip the picks return (plus whatever else it takes like Robertson) for a star goalie.

Wow, Ontario must have better weed than I thought.

Dubas not coming back

I'd imagine Keefe and entire coaching staff gone too.

Giving this core a 3rd different coach, or will new GM change things up?

Adding to this, Marlies (Leafs affiliate) got rid of their coaching staff.

Big changes coming.

Re: NHL 2023 Offseason

Sounds like Dubas leaving wasn't entirely mutual....
Shanahan wanted him back
Owners wanted him back
Dubas wanted to be back

Which led to Shanahan letting him go because Dubas didn't want to work out a deal Shanahan liked?

Or is it because of the corporate culture in MLSE where a person wanted to balance work and family life but since you're not 100% devoted to the company you're not a fit.

Re: NHL 2023 Offseason

I remember a large chunk of the Vancouver fanbase being glad when Gillis got the axe. Sure enough, his replacement made sure Canucks fans didn't have to worry about underachieving in the playoffs after dominant regular seasons anymore!

Re: NHL 2023 Offseason

Spezza resigns from the Leafs following the Dubas news.

Haven't felt this way about Leafs FO since probably the early-mid 2010s.

It's not Dubas fault at all what happened. But now we'll see what happens next for the team.

I find it hard to believe it broke down over money which is the suggestion some in the media have made. MLSE has bottomless pockets. I wonder if he wanted more control and Shanny didn't want to give that way. The Shanahan era has been characterized by getting rid of anyone who could pose a threat to his power (ie. Lou Lamoriello, Mark Hunter)

But it also wouldn't surprise if it turns out his agent knows he could get more money elsewhere. It will be interesting to see where Dubas lands.

We've kind of seen how this has played out before in Toronto with Alex Anthopoulos leaving the Jays only to win a World Series later with Atlanta.
