Some locations are actually making this hard too. The only way you can exit is through the cashier section, but if you didn't buy anything, you're not waiting in line just to leave, and just walking past everyone thinking you're cutting and just leaving makes it look like you're stealing.

Sometimes if I have time to kill at lunch I'll stop in somewhere like Hobby Lobby to check their model kits or cards. It does feel weird just browsing the place then walking out.

Continuing in the vein of going into a store and leaving without a purchase: There's a Wendy's and Arby's next-door to each other that I frequent, and sometimes my attention is too distracted. I'll walk into one meaning to go to the other. If there are other people in line that I'm waiting behind before I realize I meant to go next-door, I feel like the workers think that I think that I'm too good to wait patiently while they're busy. This is why I always overtip because I want to be known as a good customer who doesn't deserve any secret sauce. But in places like Arby's and Wendy's you don't tip, so you have to put that secret sauce fear to the very far back of your mind.

Also somewhat related, I feel bad when I go to a restaurant with every intent to use their resources without paying for them.

Recently I went to a Jersey Mike's and got a cheeseteak, but they didn't have any ketchup packets (some do, some don't), so I went next door to Five Guys which had no customers, so I felt super worse when they jumped at me coming in hoping to get a sale and I just said: "Hey, I feel bad but I already got my meal next door and was wondering if I could just snag some ketchup from you?" They had every right to say no or charge me I'm sure, but they were generous and gave me some.

My excuse in this situation though is I have a peanut allergy, which Five Guys kind of specializes in having in there. Not only could I not order anything, it was a threat just being in the building alone.
