It seems like this new generation of gaming is just coasting by their household names more then having abundance of games

I think the continual increase in production cost to make games is also hurting the industry (plus all the things you mentioned).

There really doesn't seem to be tools available to make development (for AAA releases) more efficient, streamlined and cost-effective.

Where is all the middleware - I remember hearing that would become an essential part of development in the 2000's & beyond - and why aren't these dev kits becoming easier to use?
