Southern Conference Tournament - First Round

The UNC Greensboro Spartans outlasted the Georgia Southern Eagles 78-67 on Friday in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

Kyle Hines led the way for UNC Greensboro (15-15), scoring 20 points while also grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out six assists. Landon Clement came off the bench to contribute a significant 11 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers, while Dwayne Johnson added 11 points and six rebounds.

Despite trailing by eight points at halftime, the Eagles fought hard to make a comeback. Carson Rivers was the standout for Georgia Southern, scoring 17 points and snatching four steals. Jerrold Fraser added 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Moises Sylia chipped in with 10 points and seven boards. Ted Dancy also facilitated the offense effectively with 13 assists despite only scoring two points himself.

Unfortunately for the Eagles (13-17), they were destroyed on the boards. The Spartans held a decisive 45-27 rebounding advantage, which gave the Spartans second-chance points early and often and paved the way for their win despite shooting a lower percentage from the field compared to Georgia Southern.

This win advances the Spartans to the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament, where they will face off against Chattanooga, the No. 2 seed. The Spartans defeated Chattanooga at home last week by one point in their next to last regular season game. UNC Greensboro has won four consecutive games.

Southern Conference Tournament - Quarterfinal Round

UNC Greensboro (16-15) secured an 88-81 victory over the Chattanooga Mocs (16-13) tonight in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament. The Spartans' victory is their second is the last week and a half over Chattanooga as they defeated the Mocs 59-58 at home on February 28th, as well.

The Spartans showcased a balanced attack, with Kendall Toney leading the charge with 26 points, hitting an impressive 8 out of 10 three-point attempts. Kyle Hines followed closely with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals, proving to be a significant contributor to the win. Mikko Koivisto hit 4 three-pointers and totaled 20 points and 4 rebounds.

On the other side, Bernard Osimani topped the Mocs’ scoring list with 22 points, while Lance Webb netted 20 points. Galen Downey, although not as prolific in scoring, dominated the boards with 12 rebounds and added 10 points to his name for a double-double.

However, the Mocs struggled with turnovers, giving up the ball 13 times in the game, which proved costly in the end. Florentino Sikes, despite managing 7 assists, was responsible for 5 of these turnovers. The Spartans, in comparison, turned the basketball over only 6 times.

The game started off well for the Spartans, who led at halftime with a score of 45-32. Although the Mocs fought back strongly in the second half, outscoring the Spartans 49-43, it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit they faced from the first half.

Despite the loss, the Mocs can take away positives from the game, particularly their bench strength, which contributed 17 points, led by Demetris O'Connor's 7 points.

The Spartans will face the Davidson Wildcats, led by Stephen Curry, in the Southern Conference Semifinals tomorrow night.

Southern Conference Tournament - Semifinal Round

The Davidson Wildcats overpowered the UNC Greensboro Spartans in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals with a decisive 91-71 victory on Sunday.

The Wildcats (16-13) were led by Stephen Curry and Harry Shehan, who scored 20 and 18 points respectively. Curry made 9 of 15 field goals, including 2 of 6 from beyond the arc. Shehan was a key player as well, providing 14 assists to go along with his 18 points.

Bret Chase also contributed significantly to the Wildcats' victory with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. Off the bench, Freiedrich Diawara added 10 points and 8 rebounds.

For the Spartans (16-16), Kevin Oleksiak led the scoring with 15 points, followed by Kyle Hines with 12. Hines, a Senior, had his worst game of the season, making just 3 of his 16 field goal attempts. Still, he did tally 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Max Pope had a notable performance off the bench for the Spartans, contributing 10 points and 7 rebounds in a career-high 27 minutes.

Davidson was unstoppable offensively all game, shooting 57% from the floor. The Spartans, on the other hand, shot just 40% from the field.

Davidson now looks ahead to the Southern Conference Tournament finals, while UNC Greensboro's season comes to an end with a .500 record.
