2008 Recruiting Class

In his first full offseason at the helm of UNC Greensboro, Spartans head coach Lee Williamson brought in four recruits. Of the four recruits, three are small forwards, a need coming into this season, and one is a center. All three small forwards were rated as two-star recruits while the center is a one-star recruit.

Headlining the class is Dez Carter, who hails from Lynchburg, VA. Carter is a two-star recruit and is ranked as the No. 460 overall player in this year's class, including the No. 100 small forward. He is the only member of this year's Spartans recruiting class who is nationally ranked. Carter has decent size at 6'5" and 189 lbs. and can play both small forward and shooting guard. He proved to be a very physically strong player in high school, and also was adept at finishing around the basket.

Louis Morgan hails from Cary, NC and stands at 6'5" and 195 lbs. Like Carter, he can play both small forward as well as shooting guard. Also a two-star recruit, Morgan looks to be more of a project and doesn't really excel in any one area. Athleticism is a weakness of his, particularly his quickness. He also struggles to finish around the basket.

Donny Salow hails from Philadelphia, PA and stands at 6'4" and 175 lbs. Salow is also a two-star recruit, but lacks a bit in size compared to Carter or Morgan. Still, he can play both small forward and shooting guard, though he is a bit small for a forward. Like Morgan, he looks to be more of a project and his shooting in high school was a particular struggle. He also particularly struggles at finishing near the basket.

Finally, Dominick Jacobson hails from Jacksonville, FL. A center, he is ranked just one-star, but he has good size at 6'10" and 249 lbs., and with his size he could be a welcome addition to a squad that struggled to rebound against larger teams last season. He looks to be more of a project, though he does have good strength and can finish around the rim fairly well.

Signed Recruits:
1. Dez Carter 6'5 189 (Lynchburg, VA - #460 overall, #100 SF) 2*
2. Louis Morgan 6'5 194 (Cary, NC - NR overall, NR SF) 2*
3. Donny Salow 6'4 175 (Philadelphia, PA - NR overall, NR SF) 2*
4. Dominick Jacobson 6'10 249 (Jacksonville, FL - NR overall, NR C) 1*

Re: Coaching Legacy of Lee Williamson (CH 2K8)

Solid first season for the Spartans, though it would have been fun to see how Hines would have done in the NCAA Tournament had you been able to pull off a conference title.

I liked how you kept recruiting pretty realistic and stuck with the lower-tier prospects. These legacies can get easy too quickly when recruiting leftover 3 stars and 4 stars to small schools. Looking forward to seeing how Dez Carter develops.

Yep, would’ve been interesting to see how he would’ve performed against better competition, though he kind of laid an egg in the conference tournament semifinal, anyways, sadly.

Definitely agree on the recruiting, and I aim to keep it somewhat sensible. I’ve also distributed my attribute points evenly rather than pouring them all into charisma for recruiting like people usually do. I did that with my other legacy, but I’m hoping to keep things more challenging for this one, and I think that change will keep recruiting more realistic early on.

My main focus at this point is to do well enough in my first three years to get my contract renewed. I’m a bit worried about this upcoming season after losing Hines. New guys are going to have to step up. At the same time, sometimes we relied too much on Hines, I think, to the detriment of other guys on the team. This year, we have no real standout guys so we’re going to have to put together solid team efforts to win games. And our shooters are going to have to hit their shots.

Carter certainly looks like a nice little player! I wish he was a better shooter from deep, but he’s a good defender and can drive the ball to the hole better than anyone else on the team, so I plan to take full advantage of that!

I believe they kept him, IIRC. One thing this game doesn’t have a great handle on is one-and-dones and early entrants. It’s rare to see underclassmen declare for the draft, and I don’t know if I’ve ever actually see a legit one-and-done.

vs.
UNC Greensboro (0-1) vs. Clemson (1-0)
Littlejohn Coliseum
Clemson, SC
November 7th, 2008

The Clemson Tigers roared into the new college basketball season on Friday night, crushing the UNC Greensboro Spartans 99-50 in the season opener for both teams.

Clemson (1-0) took control early, establishing a dominant 54-18 lead at halftime. The Tigers kept their foot on the gas in the second half, adding 45 points to secure a 49-point victory, coming up just one point short of scoring in triple figures.

The Tigers' balanced scoring attack saw five players scoring in double figures. Linton Eisentrout led the Tigers with 15 points. Martin Caporn added 14 points while Ronald Nichols scored 12. Roland Haranga nabbed a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double and Marvin Mihailovic added 11 points. Marlon Vianney also dominated on the glass, hauling down 16 rebounds to go along with 9 points and 3 blocks.

Meanwhile, the Spartans struggled from the field, shooting just 29% as a team. Kendall Toney scored a team-high 11 points, but he made just 4 of 14 field goals. The rest of the team didn't fare much better, with Michael Mitchell contributing 8 points on 4-for-10 shooting and freshman small forward Dez Carter adding 6 points on 3-for-11 shooting in his first collegiate game.

The Tigers, in comparison, shot 53% from the floor.

This season-opening win marks a strong start for Clemson, setting the stage for what could be a promising season for the upstart Tigers. As for the Spartans, they'll be looking to bounce back and improve on their shooting performance when they host their in-county rival High Point Panthers on Monday evening.

Not the best way to start the year but you couldn't of expected much against Clemson.
