I was hoping we’d keep it competitive for at least a little bit. Definitely worried about our scoring with Hines gone now. It was ugly. On to the next one!

High Point (0-1) vs. UNC Greensboro (1-1)
Fleming Gymnasium
Greensboro, NC
November 10th, 2008

Freshman forward Dez Carter put on a performance to remember as he led the UNC Greensboro Spartans to a 77-65 victory over the High Point Panthers at home for their first win of the young season.

The Panthers (0-1), who were playing their season-opening game tonight, struggled to keep up with the Spartans in the first half, trailing 40-29 at the break. Despite rallying in the second half, High Point couldn't get over the hump as UNC Greensboro (1-1) nearly matched them point-for-point in the second half to earn their first win of the season.

Carter was a force for UNC Greensboro, knocking down 6 of his 12 shots for a team-high 17 points. He added 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal, and a block to his stat line. Kendall Toney followed closely behind with 13 points, sinking 5 of his 8 shots, including 3 triples. Daniel Oliver added 12 points and 4 rebounds.

The Spartans also benefited from solid bench contributions. Mikko Koivisto emerged as a key player off the bench, dropping in 12 points with four three-point baskets made. Max Pope, meanwhile, had a strong performance with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

On the other side, the Panthers had a rough shooting night, making just 38% of their attempts from the field and hitting only 2 of 20 attempts from 3-point territory. Boomer McNurlin led the team in scoring with 13 points on a 6-for-9 shooting effort, while Lamont Snyder added 12 points and grabbed a team-high 7 rebounds, hitting an efficient 6 of his 8 shot attempts. However, their efforts weren't enough to overcome a strong Spartans side.

The High Point bench chipped in with 24 points, with Lloyd Victoriano leading the way with 8 points. Scottie Gamboa and Kenell Del Rosario contributed 7 points each.

The Spartans will be looking to carry their winning momentum into their next game as they head across town to take on the North Carolina A&T Aggies.

UNC Greensboro (2-1) vs. North Carolina A&T (0-2)
Corbett Sports Center
Greensboro, NC
November 12th, 2008

The UNC Greensboro Spartans narrowly secured their second win of the season, edging past the North Carolina A&T Aggies 72-69 tonight.

UNC Greensboro (2-1) was paced by Kendall Toney, who poured in 24 points with an impressive 8-of-18 effort from behind the arc. Toney struggled in the second half, but he scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half, which helped to give the Spartans an eight-point first half lead. Dez Carter and Mikko Koivisto also contributed significantly with 12 and 10 points respectively.

North Carolina A&T (0-2), on the other hand, were led by Archie Stephens with a game-high 25 points, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. Randolph Aguko added 14 points, while Lee Morandais was a force on the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds along with 8 points.

UNC Greensboro led at halftime with a score of 39-31, but North Carolina A&T rallied in the second half, outscoring the Spartans 38-33. However, the Aggies' late surge fell just short as they couldn't close the gap fully and Randolph Aguko missed a halfcourt shot with time expiring that would've tied the game.

UNC Greensboro shot 42% from the field, including 36% from beyond the three-point line. North Carolina A&T, meanwhile, shot 41% from the field, but made just 5 of their 22 attempts from beyond the arc. UNCG, in comparison, made 13 three-pointers.

The UNC Greensboro Spartans will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Towson Tigers on Saturday.

vs.
Towson (1-1) vs. UNC Greensboro (3-1)
Fleming Gymnasium
Greensboro, NC
November 15th, 2008

The UNC Greensboro Spartans (3-1) extended their winning streak to three games after securing a decisive 74-53 victory at home tonight against the Towson Tigers (1-1). Despite the Tigers' earnest attempts, the Spartans proved too strong, both in defense and offense.

For the Spartans, the top performers were Dez Carter and Kendall Toney, scoring 18 and 17 points respectively. Carter had a strong overall game, also managing to grab 10 rebounds and provide 2 assists for his first career double-double. Toney, meanwhile, showcased his shooting skills by hitting 3 out of 7 attempts from beyond the arc. Mikko Koivisto was a key contributor from the bench, delivering 12 points and 3 assists. Daniel Oliver also paced the offense with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.

On the other side, the Tigers' best performance came from Felipe Joiner, who managed to score 14 points, albeit on a lackluster 6-for-18 shooting performance from the field, including just 1-for-7 from three-point range. Bobby Tchana put forth a notable effort with 7 points and an impressive 10 rebounds. Sterling Houston also contributed well, with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.

The Spartans held a steady lead throughout the game, outscoring the Tigers in both halves. The first half ended 34-25, and UNC Greensboro extended their lead in the second half, outscoring Towson 40-28 in the game's final 20 minutes for a surprising blowout victory for the underdog Spartans.

Neither team shot particularly well from the floor, with UNCG shooting just 40% from the floor compared to Towson's 34%, but the Spartans held a big advantage on the offensive glass and outrebounded the Tigers 44-35. UNC Greensboro put up 15 more shot attempts than Towson in the win (73 to 58).

Next, the Spartans will face a stiff test when they travel to Nashville, TN to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores.

The Vanderbilt Commodores preserved their unbeaten record, overpowering UNC Greensboro Spartans 71-59 tonight.

Despite the loss, the Spartans (3-2) kept the game close and trailed by just four points, 38-34, at halftime. They had a strong start to the second half and at one point led the Commodores 49-47 midway through the second half before Vanderbilt (3-0) went on a 24-10 run to end the game and win by 12 points.

As a team, UNC Greensboro struggled with their shooting, hitting only 34% of their shots from the field, including 3 of 11 from beyond the arc.

Vanderbilt, in comparison, shot a superior 44% from the field, though they did struggle from the three-point line, where they made just 3 of 19 attempts, and from the free throw line, where they made just half of their 20 attempts.

UNC Greensboro (3-3) vs. Georgia State (3-2)
Georgia State Convocation Center
Atlanta, GA
November 22nd, 2008

A second-half surge by the Georgia State Panthers (3-2) overturned an 8-point halftime deficit as they toppled the UNC Greensboro Spartans 87-77 tonight, handing the Spartans (3-3) their second consecutive loss, both on the road.

The Spartans, who entered halftime leading 45-37, couldn't keep the momentum going in the second half, only managing to put up 32 points against the Panthers' explosive 49.

UNC Greensboro's Dez Carter was the standout performer for the Spartans, scoring 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Mikko Koivisto came off the bench to contribute 13 points, and Max Pope added 10 points and 6 rebounds on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting. Daniel Oliver also paced the offense with 11 points and 6 assists.

Ralfeal Kemp was the star of the game for the Panthers. He exploded for 31 points on an efficient 12-of-17 shooting performance, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. Kemp was supported by Marco Sinville, who contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cameron Bitee also pitched in with 13 points and 6 assists.

UNC Greensboro shot at a decent clip of 46% from the field but was outdone by Georgia State's superior 59%. The Spartans struggled to contain the Panthers in the second half, where Georgia State took full advantage of their defensive lapses. The Panthers also outrebounded the Spartans 32-23, although the Spartans did have an advantage from three-point range, where they made 10 of their 20 attempts.

Next, UNC Greensboro will look to bounce back when they host Georgia Southern next Tuesday evening to open Southern Conference play.

Georgia Southern (1-3) vs. UNC Greensboro (3-4)

November 25th, 2008

Senior guard Carson Rivers hit a clutch three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left on the clock to secure the a Southern Conference-opening win for Georgia State (1-3, 1-0) over UNC Greensboro (3-4, 0-1) tonight on the road. Rivers ended the night with 14 points.

The Spartans led 41-29 at halftime but, for the second game in a row, couldn't maintain their lead. This pattern has started to become a troubling trend for UNC Greensboro, who will need to address this issue if they hope to fare well as the season progresses.

Georgia State showed a lot of tenacity in the second half, scoring 55 points after managing just 29 in the first half. Issa McBride, who had a team-high 19 points, along with Lamar Corner and Devon Haigler, who contributed 16 and 14 points respectively, played pivotal roles in the Panthers' comeback.

For the Spartans, Dez Carter led his team with 20 points, while Daniel Oliver had an efficient game, scoring 13 points on 5-5 shooting. Mikko Koivisto also added 11 points from off the bench.

The Spartans will host College of Charleston in their next game on Saturday.
