Appalachian State (14-11) vs. UNC Greensboro (11-13)
Fleming Gymnasium
Greensboro, NC
February 16th, 2008

The UNC Greensboro Spartans (11-13, 8-7) bested the Appalachian State Mountaineers 79-70 at home, ending a two-game skid that saw them lose both games by a combined 61 points.

Kyle Hines led the way for the Spartans with a commanding performance, dropping 28 points on a 14-24 shooting night, and adding six rebounds, one assist, and five steals. Kevin Oleksiak followed with a solid 14 points, going 5-11 from the field and 3-4 from the free-throw line, along with three steals. Kendall Toney also chipped in with 13 points, connecting on 6 of 7 field goal attempts.

The Mountaineers, on the other hand, saw a standout performance from Andy Hughes, who scored 24 points on a 9-18 shooting night, including 5 of 10 from behind the arc. Hughes also managed five rebounds, an assist, a steal, and a block in his 25 minutes of play. Al Horton contributed 10 points and hauled in five rebounds, while Evan Hutchinson added 10 points off the bench.

The Spartans made a season-low two three-pointers, but they did a lot of damage from inside the arc and shot 52% from the field overall. They also made the most of their opportunities at the charity stripe, making 13 of 15 free throw attempts.

Next, UNC Greensboro faces the Davidson Wildcats on the road. The Spartans succumbed to a 32-point home defeat to Davidson in their first matchup of the season earlier this week.

vs.
UNC Greensboro (11-14) vs. Davidson (11-13)
John M. Belk Arena
Davidson, NC
February 19th, 2008

Stephen Curry led Davidson Wildcats (11-13, 10-8) to a comeback victory over UNC Greensboro Spartans (11-14, 8-8) on Tuesday night, 75-65. Curry, who played 36 minutes, scored 27 points, bolstering the Wildcats from a five-point deficit at the half to a double-digit win.

The Spartans came out strong in the first half, leading the Wildcats 41-36. Kyle Hines was a key player, scoring a team-high 21 points and contributing two rebounds and three assists. Kevin Oleksiak and Kendall Toney also had a significant impact with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

However, the Spartans' momentum slowed in the second half as they only managed to put up 24 points against the Wildcats' 39. This decline in performance can be attributed in part to their poor 3-point shooting, managing to sink just 2 out of 11 attempted three-point shots, and their free-throw percentage was just over 50% with 9 out of 16.

On the other hand, Davidson's second-half resurgence was led by Stephen Curry, who scored 15 of his 27 points in the second half. He shot 11-20 from the field, including 2-5 from beyond the arc and was perfect from the free-throw line, making all three attempts. Cyrus Andrews also had a strong game with a double-double, contributing 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Harry Shehan and Bret Chase provided additional support, scoring 12 and 9 points respectively. Shehan also contributed with five assists.

The Wildcats dominated the glass against UNC Greensboro, outrebounding the away team 41-24.

Tonight's win gives Davidson the season sweep against the Spartans, although tonight's game was much closer than the 32-point blowout win for the Wildcats last week in their first matchup of the season in Greensboro.

UNC Greensboro will look to bounce back on Thursday when they face Western Carolina on the road.

UNC Greensboro (11-14) vs. Western Carolina (13-9)
Ramsey Center
Cullowhee, North Carolina
February 21st, 2008

The Western Carolina Catamounts (13-9, 10-6) proved to be too much for UNC Greensboro tonight, coming out victorious with a resounding 83-61 home win.

A dominant first-half performance from the Catamounts set the tone for the game. They went into halftime leading the Spartans 47-24, taking advantage of UNC Greensboro's poor shooting. The Spartans (11-15, 8-9), who suffered their fourth loss in their last five games, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the game.

Kyle Hines was the standout for the Spartans, netting 28 points from a stellar 14-for-20 shooting. Despite Hines' performance, the Spartans had a disappointing game overall, only managing to convert 39% of their field goals, including making just 2 of their 15 three-point attempts. The team also struggled with turnovers, giving the ball away 13 times over the course of the game.

On the other hand, the Catamounts demonstrated a balanced attack, with four starters scoring in double figures. Jaivon Halsch led the charge with 19 points on an impressive 9-for-11 shooting, closely followed by Major Restrepo who put up 18 points. Fredrick Prato and Caron Nashif both contributed 14 points, with Nashif also pulling down an impressive 14 rebounds, effectively dominating the boards.

The Catamounts dominated the glass with a 41-32 rebounding margin. Western Carolina jumped all over the Spartans from the start of the game and held a 23-point halftime advantage.

Next, UNC Greensboro hosts College of Charleston next Monday evening.

February 28th, 2008

Kyle Hines sank a fadeaway post shot from 11 feet to win the game as time expired for UNC Greensboro as they defeated the Chattanooga Mocs at home, 59-58.

The Spartans (13-15, 10-9), who improved their conference record above .500 with tonight's victory, held the Mocs to just 20 first half points, but Chattanooga (15-12, 11-8) had more success in the second half, scoring 38.

After leading most of the game, and by as many as 11 points, the Mocs ended up taking the lead late and led by as many as four points in the late going, and by one point in the final seconds before Hines hit the game-winner.

Despite hitting the game-winner, Hines struggled offensively, making just 5 of his 14 shot attempts. Still, he ended with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. Kevin Oleksiak led the Spartans in scoring with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.

Robbie McFadgon led Chattanooga in scoring and rebounding as he notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Florentino Sikes also added 10 points and 6 boards for the Mocs.

Both teams struggled offensively tonight, and despite struggling offensively themselves, it was the second consecutive game the Spartans have held their opponents below 60 points.

UNC Greensboro will close out their regular season when they host Western Carolina on Monday. The Spartans will also be playing to achieve a winning record in conference play as they will enter the regular season's final game with a 10-9 record in Southern Conference action.

Western Carolina (16-10) vs. UNC Greensboro (14-15)
Fleming Gymnasium
Greensboro, NC
March 3rd, 2008

UNC Greensboro (14-15, 11-9) upset Western Carolina (16-10, 13-7) tonight 69-61 to end the regular season. Nevertheless, the Catamounts still clinched the Southern Conference regular season title despite tonight's eight-point loss.

On Senior Night, the Spartans got good performances out of their three seniors: Kyle Hines, Kevin Oleksiak, and Dwayne Johnson. Hines led the charge for the Spartans, notching 25 points on an efficient 12-of-20 shooting, and pulling down nine rebounds, coming just one board free of a double-double. Oleksiak added 13 points, despite struggling from the field at 4-for-14. Johnson only scored seven points, but shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and made a three-pointer.

The Catamounts were paced by Jaivon Halsch who had 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Caron Nashif added 15 points and 11 rebounds, recording a double-double, while Major Restrepo contributed 11 points and four rebounds. Ahmad Melvin also added 11 points and four rebounds from off the bench.

The Catamounts struggled from beyond the arc, managing only 2-of-22 from three-point range which proved consequential. The Spartans weren't much better at just 4-for-13 from three-point range.

The Spartans trailed tonight by one point at the half, 35-34, but outscored the Catamounts by nine points in the second half and held them to just 26 points.

With tonight's win, UNC Greensboro ends the season at 14-15 and 11-9 in Southern Conference play. They will face Georgia Southern in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament on Friday.
