Man, that's too bad. To think they were "cautious" with him during that one playoff run in not pitching him, and yet he still panned out the way he did with health issues. Almost makes you wonder if more pitching would just strengthen them right like the ol' days (or fate will still find them regardless, rather).

Yeah it's tough to value him now. If he was gonna break $500M it was cause you were gonna hoping to get at least 3-4 more years of him being a unicorn. Now you are gonna get his "best" remaining years as just a DH (still a very good DH). If he needs TJ again then we likely won't see him pitch again until 2025 at the earliest, when he'll be 31. A 2nd TJ surgery is not quite as predictable to recover from as a first is these days. And you look at how it's taken a while for Bryce Harper to get back into form coming off TJ.

I think we will see a very wide range of valuations from clubs this offseason. He's still going to be uber-marketable worldwide. But his best prime years as only a DH will certainly affect his value. Maybe this actually plays a few more clubs into the race who weren't going to spend $500M.

Or maybe it's a partial tear and he won't need TJ. There are other procedures out there that have shorter recover time-lines if that is the case

I mean, he can play the outfield right? The only reason he is DH is because they didn't want him to pitch and play the field.

He's played 7 innings in RF and 1 in LF.

I'm sure he could pick a corner spot and be at least passable, but if he has to get TJ he still won't be able to play outfield for all of next year and likely most of 2025. Maybe he can pick up 1B like Bryce?

That still eats up 2 of his remaining "prime" years that teams were presumably going to be willing to overpay in the back half of a Mega-deal for. It's tough to make a case that a primary DH (even an elite one like Ohtani) is worth $30M+ annually

All that to say, even though this is all certainly a bit of an overreaction before we know the full scope of his injury (i.e. does he need TJ again), there's definitely a lot more questions to be answered this offseason

I’d actually be more reluctant to give him big money if he has a non TJ procedure. I feel like his arm will be a time bomb and it’s just delaying an inevitable TJ surgery

Yeah those are less proven, but I think Tanaka got a PRP injection for a partial tear and didn't need to get TJ.

There's also a newer procedure they can do for partial tears where they can implant a collagen "brace" around a partially torn ligament instead of replacing it with one from your wrist/knee (which I believe is what TJ is). I actually had that procedure done when I tore my UCL in college and only missed 1 season instead of 2 because of it. I want to say Rick Ankiel had that surgery as well when he was trying to make his comeback as a pitcher a few years ago. Doesn't have the track record of succes as Tommy John but it nearly cuts recovery time in half
