Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Edgar Martinez was a pure hitting machine.
He is in.
NO question.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

If Edgar had played 3B (or possibly even 1B) for the majority of his career, he'd most likely be in. Because he was a DH, he's borderline. I'll be shocked if he makes it first ballot. His relatively low counting stats and lack of MVP votes are going to be held against him by many of the writers. Frank Thomas is the only primary DH that I see getting in easily. Edgar will be touch and go.

That would be a little short sighted(by the writers).
First....it's not Edgars fault that the Junior Circuit decided to adopt a silly rule like the D.H.
Second.....I'm sure that if presented with the prospect of having no D.H......any manager in his right mind would have found a position for Martinez....everyday.
His last few years dragged his lifetime batting avg. down and that will hurt somewhat.

I think you guys forget that Edgar was a 3B early in his career. I think some huge injury was what caused him to be a DH full time. So really the decision was taken away from managers even if they wanted to put him in the field.

Yep it was an injury (and yes blame Canada if you must)

Quote:
Martínez made his major league debut in September 12, 1987, and became a fixture in the Mariners' lineup in 1990, replacing Jim Presley at third base. He began his career as a third baseman and won an American League batting title in 1992, but then he tore his hamstring during an exhibition game at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, B.C. just before the 1993 season, and never fully recovered. [2] Martínez became a full-time designated hitter in 1995.

I was there when Edgar tore his hammy on the crappy BC Place carpet. That was the first MLB game I ever saw live, a 4-1 M's win over Milwaukee. Maybe you should blame me.

Oh...I didn't forget.
Even with the injury, I think they would have found a way to trot him out there at some position considering his hitting skill.
The D.H. was convenient in this situation.
While it helped a good player extend his career....the D.H. still blows.
Now....I still say H.O.F. for Edgar.

Yeah, the DH was convenient, but at the same time he became so immobile that the only position he could play (crappily) was 1B and they had Tino* blocking him.

*saying/typing Tino Martinez's name makes me develop temporary turrets and shout **** Russ Davis!
