Cardinals drop series to Pirates in Pittsburgh

The Cardinals (55-48) dropped 2 games of a 3 game series with the Pirates in Pittsburgh to begin the week. The Cardinals are now a game behind the Brewers in the NL Central.

The offense was horrible in the first two games scoring a single run in each of the first two games with a total of 6 hits. Game 3 saw the offense put up 6 runs on 9 hits with no runs coming via the long ball. Pitching was solid in the game as well until the 9th when JoJo Romero made things interesting letting a 6-1 lead slip to 6-2 with 2 on before getting Endy Rodriguez to line out to end the game.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they head home for a 3 game weekend series with the Nationals. The Cardinals then close out the month of July with a 3 game series with the Rangers in St.Louis.

Oakland went 3-1 against the Guardians in the opening series of the year.

With the series tied at 1-1, game three was a wild one.

A's starter Alex Wood scraped his way into inning 5 with a pitch count of 94. Every inning he was getting himself into major trouble, but amazingly getting himself out of it, mainly thanks to some superb infield play, turning double plays and plucking line drives out of the air.

Top of the 7th with Cleveland up 2-1, bases loaded and threatening to break the game wide open, Oakland reliever Austin Adams forced a pop up from Ramirez into the wide foul area at the Coliseum and 1B Ryan Noda pursued it, and an amazing diving catch and caught the ball. I gave him literally no hope of running this ball down.

Bottom of the 8th, Zac Gelof forced a walk, with Noda in the on deck circle. He immediately went down two strikes, and cleveland who'd been pitching ultra aggressively all night, I knew would come after him.

And they did, and Noda was waiting and crushed a ball over the RF wall and into the 2nd deck with an EV of 114mph and distance of 465ft, it's the biggest home run I've seen in MLB 24.

In the space of a few minutes Noda had turned this game on its head.

Mason Miller and his 101mph fastball did the job closing out the 9th, to give the A's a 2-1 series lead.

The 4th and final game was another back n forth game with lots of twists and turns. Rookie RHP JT Ginn was twirling a gem, giving up one long ball, but striking out 5 in his debut. Going into the 5th, when with one out, he had to leave the game with a shoulder injury which will keep him out of the team for 2 months.

Cleveland once again would lead for most of the game, racing out to a 3-nil lead heading into the 8th. And once again their bullpen would let them down. Carrasco walked his first two batters and then gave up a long ball to Zac Gelof who was waiting for an offspeed pitch at the knees. Scores 3-3 in crack of the bat.

Carrasco would then give up another walk with 2 out before he would be replaced by Eli Morgan. Brent Rooker took him deep off the CF wall for an RBI double and a 4-3 Oakland lead. Mason Miller would once again close out the game, this time with a 21 pitch 9th inning, that had walks, full counts, 10 fould balls, a hit and a hit by pitch.

Every game in the series was down to the wire and decided by a run.

Oakland will now get ready to welcome the Red Sox to town for a 3-game set over the weekend.

The 2026 Reapers finished again in last place with the Guardians winning the Central. The Phillies defeated the Mariners to win the World Series. It was a bit of a rough season for the Reapers but the light is finally starting to shine on this team with some of the young guys showing up. Dominic Fletcher won a gold glove and Bobby Kirby was third in the Rookie of the year voting.

The Reapers had a bunch of trades at the deadline: the Reapers acquired CP Will Klein and 2B Top prospect Terry Nunez from the Pirates for Andrew Vaughn, Zach Deloach, and Matt Foster. The Reapers acquired RP Andreas Franco and SP Nick Swiney from the Giants for Ron Marinaccio and Kyle Farmer. The Reapers acquired 2B Hank Gehringer and RP Arnold Kobayashi from the Rangers for n Jake Woodford and Ryan Yarbrough.

Blue Jays extend their winning streak to 9 with a 3rd consecutive sweep

The Blue Jays hot streak continues with a sweep of the Nationals in Washington. The offense remained hot during the series, recording 10+ hits in each games, including 6 HR while the pitching didn't have any real trouble.

Toronto (27-8), who still maintain a 6 games lead over Baltimore, have a day off as they travel to Philadelphia for a quick 2 games series against the Phillies (18-17).

CONTRACT EXTENSIONS

Flagstaff announced a flurry of contract extensions this week. 29-year-old shortstop Jimmy James (79 OVR, B POT) was signed to a 2-year, $2.61M extension, 29-year-old right fielder Thomas Sanders (80 OVR, B POT) signed a 2-year, $386K extension, 28-year-old shortstop Ryan Kelly (85 OVR, B POT) signed a 3-year, $37.16M extension, 26-year-old reliever Samuel Espinoza (80 OVR, B POT) signed a 2-year, $7.89M extension and 30-year-old right fielder Roberto Geronimo (81 OVR, B POT) signed a 1-year, $18.7M extension.

St George has extended 29-year-old left fielder Harper Reyes (88 OVR, B POT) on a 5-year deal worth $49.5M.

Salt Lake has extended left fielder Darell McCloud (86 OVR, A POT) to a 2-year 1.5M extension. The 25-year-old has hit 15 home runs and drove in 47 this year. They have also extended first baseman Rafael Geronimo (85 OVR, B POT) to a 5-year, $37.0M extension.

Gilbert has extended first baseman Jonathan Tunick (86 OVR, A POT) to a 5-year, $75M extension.

Chandler has extended 20-year-old second baseman Zach Dossett on a five-year, $90M extension. Dossett is arguably the best player in the IBL and he is going nowhere. The best team in the IBL keeping it's core together.

Mesa has extended 25-year-old starting pitcher Richard Logan (90 OVR, A POT) to a 2-year, $6.8M deal.

Salt River has extended 27-year-old shortstop Eli Chavez (87 OVR, B POT) to a 3-year, $33.5M deal. They also extended 36-year-old closer Robert Fitzgerald (84 OVR, B POT) on a one-year, $4M deal and 26-year-old first baseman Jesus Galindo (83 OVR, B POT) to a 3-year, $3.2M deal.

Glendale has extended 31-year-old starting pitcher Terry Hooks (86 OVR, B POT) to a 5-year, $20.7M deal to keep the right hander in the desert through the 2029 season. They have also locked up 22-year-old third baseman Emil Palmeiro (82 OVR, A POT) on a very team friendly 2-year extension, worth $3M.

Goodyear has extended 28-year-old reliever Owen Bonds (89 OVR, B POT) to a one-year, $15.6M deal and 22-year-old third baseman Kian Kuo (85 OVR, A POT) to a two-year, $6.4M deal.

Scottsdale has extended 21-year-old superstar first baseman Lee Lim (95 OVR, A POT) to a 2-year, $9.2M deal and 23-year-old left fielder Jaden Evans (89 OVR, A POT) to a 2-year, $8.6M deal.

DEADLINE DAY

Phoenix, AZ (AP) – The Intermountain Baseball League trade deadline was Wednesday at 3pm. This year there was a flurry of activity as contenders looked to add pieces for a championship run, while some teams looked to unload salary, while acquiring prospects as they look towards the future.

Tucson has sent 33-year-old reliever Jarrett Green (82 OVR, B POT) to Henderson in exchange for a couple of prospects in 20-year-old left fielder Geraldo Guillen (54 OVR, B POT) and 22-year-old reliever Ryan Frost (59 OVR, C POT).

After Tuesday evenings game, the Hops then sent 20-year-old third baseman Kiko Pressley (83 OVR, A POT) to Long Beach in exchange for 22-year-old centerfielder Elliot Colbear (79 OVR, B POT), 22-year-old starting pitcher Chris Valenzuela (73 OVR, C POT) and 23-year-old reliever Fred Shelley (68 OVR, C POT). Elliot Colbear is the fourth rated prospect in the IBL hitting .249 in Triple-A with six home runs, 31 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. He will be assigned to Albuquerque. Pressley never got a fair shake in Flagstaff after being a high draft pick. He only had 380 at-bats in three seasons, hitting .245 with one home run and 23 RBIs with 11 stolen bases.

Glendale has traded 30-year-old catcher Alfredo Diaz (80 OVR, B POT) to Santa Fe for 22-year-old starting pitcher Tekoah Roby (70 OVR, C POT) and 24-year-old centerfielder Tyler Oliver (68 OVR, B POT). Diaz should start in Santa Fe with the injury to Dan Torres. Both players going back to Glendale are minor leaguers.

Scottsdale made a move to beef up their bullpen as they acquired 32-year-old closer Raymond Lane (91 OVR, A POT) from Roswell in exchange for two minor league pitchers in 21-year-old starting pitcher Jason McCain (63 OVR, B POT) and 21-year-old reliever Scott French (61 OVR, C POT).. Lane had 25 saves in 29 opportunities this season for Roswell and has recorded 112 saves in three seasons for the Aliens. Lane will move into a setup role for the Scorpions as they look to close in on Surprise in the DL Central.
