Sad part, being named after Gunther from Friends would've been an improvement over the actual reason.

WWE recently trademarked Gunther Stark. Nobody is expected to know the significance of that name right away, but a simple Google search reveals thsts the exact name of a WW2 u-boat commander from Germany...ya, nice guy to name someone after.

So in the same week you announce the Elimination Chamber in SA AND rename a guy from Austria after a Nazi. So the second they see a group in NXT consisting of guys from Italy, Germany, Austria, that's where their mindset goes?

Sadly, this doesn't even surprise me coming from WWE.

Re: WWE: NXT Thread

If you wanted to, you could probably make a case that the Imperium group always had undertones of that stuff anyway, no?

I probably shouldn’t because they’ve proven me wrong too many times, but for now I’m going to chalk up the Gunther name to coincidence and most of the reaction being people wanting to complain. It sounds exactly like it came out of a WWE generic name generator instead of being an homage to a random U-boat commander that nobody’s ever heard of. Never attribute to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity.

Even without any of this, it’s still 100% a stupid name change though.

Re: WWE: NXT Thread

It's a name change for trademark reasons just like all the rest. Not sure why people get so bent out of shape about them or why they need to assume it's to pay "homage" to some Nazi from the 1940's.

They should've changed his name once he joined NXT UK, so that a lot of this "fake outrage" doesn't happen.

Then again, these are wrestling fans on the internet and they'll literally whiny, cry or complain about everything WWE does.

And we wonder why the industry is slowly dying........SMDH

Re: WWE: NXT Thread

Of all the reasons you blame for the industry being trash right now, I don't think the whiny fans have that much power to impact it that way.

It's a turn off and especially for something that has a niché following, currently.

I mean I get that. I'm just saying that blaming the industry on fans is weak.

That's your opinion and I'm allowed to have mine too. Our constant need to whine, gatekeep and worry about backstage politics definitely has played a part in the decline of the industry and that is just how I feel.

I understand being attached to a name and gimmick, but giving him another alias allows them to trademark theirs while he keeps his indy name.

Otherwise, people would cry and complain when they part ways and WWE refuses to let him use the 'Walter' name outside the company.
