It makes "Timmy" understand what he is calling rather than looking at 32 different plays in 7 pages of confusion? As of now he just picks a play and prays its a mid range play. LOL! He has no idea what play he is calling because like you said earlier he doesn't know the play names or play types...
This is the best idea Czar and I love it. Yes it adds another button but it should take just another second to push. If you call your play while bringing the ball up court then this should not be a problem. If you dont know what play you want to call or wait until you are standing right at the 3pt line then you will already be in danger of the shot clock running out by the end of the play with with the current playcalling system.

I would think this would be better for "Timmy" also. Lets say Timmy decides to run plays for just one game. Well instead of seeing 6 pages of plays for a player who has all 4 play types slots filled, he could select the play type he want then will see just 2 pages of plays and in the process he wont be overwhelmed.

Also, say I want to run a play for someone off the bench or one of the lesser used players. Well in the current play call system I will bring his plays up, see the plays available for him, then not know what type of play it is. But if the system that vannwolfhawk proposed was implemented then it would also cut down on the confusion players have when they see a play and not know what type of play it is. And this brings me back to the extra button push. When its all said and done and you have picked your play I would think that this way would actually be quicker. Instead of flipping through 4,5, or 6 pages you will just have to go through 1,2,or 3 pages because you filtered out the rest of the play types you dont want. And the screen wont be clustered with all different types of plays.

IF people like this and it appears you do be sure to say something. I think the feedback of users that the extra button press will make the current system easier to understand can outweigh the simplicity of having one less button press.

But you need to speak up those who are just reading. I want to be able to refer to this thread.

Extra button FTW!

Another good idea is to allow us to set the 'Quick Plays'. These would be the plays you run from the d-pad. This would give 5 plays that are accessible with 2 button presses. Of course, you should be allowed to set the default ones like ISO, or post up, but having 2 goto plays instead of get open and quick screen (i still havent figured out how to use those 2) would make it even better. Maybe even Timmy would select the 2 plays he would want to put into the simpler play calling method and would not even need to touch the advanced method.

Hopefully this thread helps but I doubt it - you know how that goes.

It's not about the number of button presses - it is about the information being given. You can incorporate both suggestions earlier where the information is laid out in a more logical manner with the extra button press and somehow allow a the first sub menu be a "quick play" menu of sorts for the casuals. Best of both worlds - the sim user is going to spend time digging and the casual has options at their disposal with as few selections as possible.

I'm one of those reading but not sure what to say. I'm not as basketball-saavy as many of the posters are. I do know that w/2K11 I rarely ran plays; w/2K12 I took your advice, set my playcalling to Auto and turned full Playvision on - and never looked back. I think the cpu seems to do a very good job w/the playcall variety, and it may be my imagination but in late/close games I've noticed plays run more for my star player. During the course of a game I'll run a manual play as it's pretty intuitive. And I use the in-game adjustments a lot (pressure shooter, spacing, etc.).

I like the system in place as it's gotten me to embrace playcalling; I've had the game since release and I'm still learning. I'd prefer not to see any new system that's only accessible to those that are super-knowledgeable as it'd likely drive me back to my 2K11 ways where I mostly freestyled and ran pick and rolls a lot. Imo the vast majority of people don't run plays simply because they don't understand them. Hopefully 2K will include in-game video tutorials similar to those Madden used to do last gen to get people to adopt playcalling a little more

Hopefully 2K will include in-game video tutorials similar to those Madden used to do last gen to get people to adopt playcalling a little more
Good info Spank Appreciate that !

It makes "Timmy" understand what he is calling rather than looking at 32 different plays in 7 pages of confusion? As of now he just picks a play and prays its a mid range play. LOL! He has no idea what play he is calling because like you said earlier he doesn't know the play names or play types...
this!
It is easier to press that extra button than to go through the pages of plays while bringing the ball up the court with tight defense on you.
what I do to simulate this is, I customize my playbook so I have 5 plays (or multiples of 5) for each play type - this makes it easier to go through pages to find a particular play. So for a player assigned mid range - cutter - post low - post high plays, in the game, the first page of plays for that player are all mid range, 2nd page are cutter plays etc.

the problem is, you cannot delete plays from the playbook ! so if you have 6 p&r plays in your book it messes things up.

other things related to play calling they should add
1- Ability to assign specific plays to specific players would be great. A p&r play suitable for player a is not a good choice for player b (this is only a problem when you use auto playcalling).

2 - Give the ability to change off ball player positions for any play (this should be easy. just give the ability to switch player positions when looking at a play diagram in the edit playbook menu.)

3 - Invest every single minute and dollar to fix the passing and player speed and it should be fine.

Re: Playbooks Play-Type Assignments They should add

Here is a quick write-up of what I would love to have for playcalling in 2k13.

You can assign all play types to each player, not only 4. Every player has their own playbook (chosen from the team's playbook).

In game:
L1+pick player

Pop-up shows play types -

Triangle - Post High
Square - Post Low
Circle - Mid Range
X - 3 PT
L2 - Best Play (works the same way it is now, but if it's under this menu it's the best play for the selected player)
R2 - Next Page
Trianlge - Pick and Roll
Square - Pick and Pop
Circle - Isolation
X - Lob Play/Alley oop
L2 - Best Play (same as above - you don't have to go back to run best play)

you select the play type and only then you see the play names to choose from. Let's say I do L1+select player + Triangle, but that player does not have any High Post games in his playbook; then the game can automatically choose best play or pop up menu can flash quickly on the screen indicating there is no high post plays for this player.

In game:
Dpad right

Pop-up shows play types - timmy wants to run a high post play - he wants to let the cpu decide who gets the shot based on tendency/rating. all he does is: dpad right+Triangle - the cpu will select the best high post play available based on the score-matchups-tendencies-ratings etc etc.

Triangle - Post High
Square - Post Low
Circle - Mid Range
X - 3 PT
L2 - Best Play
R2 - Next Page
Trianlge - Pick and Roll
Square - Pick and Pop
Circle - Isolation
X - Lob Play/Alley oop
L2 - Best Play (same as above - you don't have to go back to run best play)

The trick is 2k needs to assign play types to specific buttons (and make the order editable!) so it becomes second nature quickly. After a while I'm sure no one will even read the pop up menus because you'll know exactly the button sequence you need to press to get a particular play or at least a particular play type (dpad option).

Right now the system involves memorising the names and types of plays / who got assigned a particular type of play and in which order etc. It works well, but it could be much much much more efficient.

Please add/edit as necessary. We are lucky to have Da_Czar here connecting the developers to users.
