The hold off defenders (hostage dribble) mechanic is bugged in New Gen

One of the best gameplay mechanics 2k devs ever added (hostage dribble/putting defenders in jail) is not working in New Gen.

It works perfectly fine in 2K24 Old Gen. You can see it here:

In New Gen you can't keep defenders on your back because the hold off animation is not triggering:

Obviously, if the hold off animations can't be triggered, the animation where the trailing defender gets in front of the ball handler isn't triggering either.

Sometimes you can trigger some animations that shield the ball from the defender but you can't keep dribbling with the defender on your back, while in Old Gen you can.

There are other gameplay animations bugged in Next Gen but this is first priority. NBA superstars like Luka or Booker use this mechanic a lot irl against PnR drop coverage.

I don't know. I was playing on Old Gen until last week.

I dont think I have ever gotten the animation online in PNO.


Just tried in a game and the defense can walk back in front of you, they may get clipped by your body but I dont see the animation like you say.

The animation is not triggering at all in New Gen. Which is weird beacause it works flawlessly in Old Gen/PC. Hope it's fixed in the next patch/update.

I'm going to try if I can do the 2 hour free trial in 2k23 for Xbox series X/S.

Update: 2k21 and 2k22 are not even available in the Xbox Store. No free trial available for 2k23 New Gen.

I'm going to check My old Gen of 2K. But I just tried on current gen in 2k24. Yeah it's impossible to trigger.
