Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #39 of Season

St Louis Cardinals (20-18) @ Boston Red Sox (25-13)
Pitching Matchup – Adam Wainwright vs James Paxton

The game was scoreless through the first 3 innings as James Paxton looked good early making his return to a big league mound for the first time since April 6, 2021 and Adam Wainwright was sharp early for St Louis. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of the 4th when Contreras doubled to start and came in to score on a RBI double by Dylan Carlson giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Boston had runners at the corners with 2 outs for Enmanuel Valdez in the bottom of the 4th and he ripped a liner back to the mound hitting Wainwright and bouncing away allowing Devers to score and Valdez is credited with a RBI single. Paxton retired the side in the top of the 5th and Wainwright recorded the first 2 outs in the bottom of the 5th before Justin Turner launched a solo HR into the green monster seats giving Boston a 2-1 lead. Willson Contreras doubled with 1 out in the top of the 6th but Paxton would finish off a strong first outing of the season by recording back to back Ks of Nolan Gorman and Dylan Carlson for his 6th & 7th Ks of the ball game and the score remained 2-1. The Red Sox added a run in the bottom of the 6th as Triston Casas doubled and came in to score when Kike Hernandez smoked a rocket off the wall in LF but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Wainwright would retire Valdez for the 3rd out sending the game to the 7th inning with Boston now leading 3-1. Joely Rodriguez took over on the mound making his Red Sox debut in the top of the 7th and pitched a scoreless frame. Genesis Cabrera struck out Yoshida on a pitch in the dirt for what should have been the 3rd out but reached when Contreras throw pulled Goldschmidt off the bag keeping the inning alive for Boston. The error by Contreras would come back to bite St Louis as Turner singled and Devers followed with a RBI single extending the Red Sox lead and we would head to the 8th inning with Boston up 4-1. Chris Martin came on to pitch the top of the 8th and Paul Goldschmidt led off the inning with a rocket into the monster seats making it a 4-2 game. Martin came back with 3 straight strikeouts of Arenado, Contreras and Gorman to end the frame with the score still 4-2. Jordan Hicks pitched the bottom of the 8th and got Reese McGuire to ground into a 6-4-3 inning ending double play sending the the game to the 9th inning with the Cardinals coming up needing two runs as they trail 4-2. Kenley Jansen was on to try and finish it off for Boston and would record two quick outs striking out Carlson and getting DeJong to ground out as the Cardinals were down to their final out. Jansen ran a cutter in on the hands of Oscar Mercado who popped out to Valdez for the final out and the Red Sox win 4-2

Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #40 of Season

St Louis Cardinals (20-19) @ ]Boston Red Sox (26-13)
Pitching Matchup – Steven Matz vs Chris Sale

The Cardinals got a 2-run HR from Nolan Arenado in the top of the 1st and a RBI single from Dylan Carlson in the top of the 2nd as they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Chris Sale. The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the 3rd when the Red Sox bats came alive with 2 outs as Rob Refsnyder doubled and came in to score on a RBI double by Justin Turner. Rafael Devers was up net and got a slider from Steven Matz that stayed up in the zone and Devers launched it into the St Louis bullpen for a 2-run HR tying the game at 3-3. St Louis would retake the lead with 2 outs in the top of the 5th when Juan Yepez delievered a RBI single and Matz would get Justin Turner to ground into an inning ending double play in the bottom of the 5th to send the game to the 6th inning with the Cardinals leading 4-3. The Cardinals extended the lead in the top of the 6th when Dylan Carlson lined a ball into the LF corner with 2 outs scoring Edman but Carlson was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double and the lead was now 5-3. Matz would get through the bottom of the 6th and we would head to the 7th inning with St Louis leading 5-3. Josh Winckowski took over for Sale and pitched a scoreless top of the 7th while Chris Stratton took over for Matz in the bottom of the 7th and retired the first two batters before Verdugo singled and Refsnyder walked to put two men on for Turner with 2 outs. Turner hooked a line drive into the LF corner for a RBI single as Verdugo scored to make it a one run game but Turner was gunned down going for second base to end the inning costing the Red Sox a golden opportunity as they would have had Devers coming up with two men on base and we would head to the 8th inning with the Cardinals leading 5-4. Winckowski pitched a scoreless top of the 8th and Genesis Cabrera came on to pitch the bottom of the 8th for St Louis. Devers began the bottom of the 8th with a rocket in the gap for a lead off double putting the tying run in scoring position for Boston with nobody out. Masataka Yoshida grounded to Edman at second base for the 1st out but Devers would advance to 3rd base bringing up Kike Hernandez who jumped on the first pitch from Cabrera and lined a RBI single to CF tying the game at 5-5. Jarren Duran hammered a ball deep to CF but Nootbaar would track it down to make the catch on the warning track for the 2nd out and Connor Wong would fly to CF for the 3rd out sending the game to the 9th inning tied at 5-5. John Schreiber came on to pitch the top of the 9th for Boston and recorded two quick outs before Nolan Gorman hammered a ball high and deep to CF but to the deepest part of the ball park as Duran would race back and make the catch in the triangle in CF for a loud out as Schreiber retires the side and the Red Sox would come to bat in the bottom of the 9th with a chance to walk off with a victory as the score remained tied 5-5. Drew Ver Hagen came on to pitch a scoreless bottom of the 9th for St Louis and we were headed to extra innings with the score tied 5-5. Gorman was on second base to start the top of the 10th as the extra innings runner for St Louis and Schreiber would retire Yepez for the 1st out before Paul Goldschmidt came off the bench to pinch hit for Nootbaar and delivered a RBI double off the green monster to give the Cardinals a 6-5 lead. Paul DeJong followed with a bloop RBI single to RF making it 7-5. Dylan Carlson blew the game open with 2 outs when he smoked a ball down the 3rd base line into the LF corner driving in 2 runs to make it 9-5. Ver Hagen remained in the ball game to pitch the bottom of the 10th with a 9-5 lead and Devers led off with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Ryan Helsley came on to replace Ver Hagen on the mound and Masataka Yoshida got a hanging slider from Helsley and launched a 406 foot blast for a 3-run HR into the Sox bullpen and suddenly we had a one run ball game as the Cardinals lead was cut to 9-8 with nobody out. Helsley would get Hernandez to fly out to CF for the 1st out before Jarren Duran singled to put the tying run on base with 1 out. Connor Wong was up next and Helsley would get him to hit the ball on the ground to Arenado to start a game ending 5-4-3 double play as the Cardinals hang on to win 9-8 in 10 innings

Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #41 of Season

St Louis Cardinals (21-19) @ Boston Red Sox (26-14)
Pitching Matchup – Miles Mikolas vs Corey Kluber

(GOING WITH SHORTER RECAPS GOING FORWARD IN AN EFFORT TO SAVE TIME)
The Red Sox got a solo HR from Justin Turner in the 1st inning and RBI double from Enmanuel Valdez in the 2nd inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Cardinals got RBI singles from Willson Contreras, Brendan Donovan and Alec Burleson in the top of the 3rd to take a 3-2 lead. The score stayed 3-2 into the 6th inning where Dylan Carlson and Tommy Edman would knock in runs to extend the Cardinals lead to 5-2. The Red Sox made it a one run game in the bottom of the 7th when Masataka Yoshida took Mikolas deep for a 2-run HR on a 423 foot blast cutting the deficit to 5-4. Giovanny Gallegos was on to pitch the bottom of the 8th for St Louis and Jarren Duran would strikeout leading off the inning on a pitch in the dirt but reached when Contreras threw the ball over the head of Goldschmidt at first base. The error would prove costly as Triston Casas stayed on a fastball away with 1 out and drove it opposite field over the green monster for a go ahead 2-run HR giving Boston a 6-5 lead. Kenley Jansen was on to pitch the top of the 9th and issued a lead off walk to Carlson. Tommy Edman laid down a sac bunt that went back to Jansen who threw to second base and would have had Carlson cut down but he threw the ball into CF for a huge error and the runners moved up putting two men in scoring position with nobody out. The inning turned into a true disaster as Jansen had two strikes on Lars Nootbaar but left a fastball up and over the plate and Nootbaar absolutely crushed it 438 feet into the RF stands to give the Cardinals a 8-6 lead. Chris Martin replaced Jansen on the mound and Goldschmidt & Gorman would reach before Nolan Arenado brought them in with a rocket down the RF line for a stand up triple making it 10-6 still with nobody out. Alec Burleson added a RBI single with 2 outs as the Cardinals explode for 6 runs in the 9th turning a 6-5 deficit into a 11-6 lead and the Red Sox would come to bat in the bottom of the 9th trailing by 5 runs. Jordan Hicks was on to pitch the bottom of the 9th and retired the side as the Cardinals win 11-6

GAME NOTES
* The Red Sox drop the rubber match of this 3 game series in frustrating fashion as they took a 6-5 lead into the 9th inning after a big go ahead HR by Casas in the bottom of the 8th before St Louis exploded for 6 runs off Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin in the top of the 9th and the Cardinals go on to win 11-6

* The Red Sox drop the final two games of the series and fall to 26-15 while the Cardinals improve to 22-19 on the season

* Corey Kluber pitched 5.2 innings allowing 5 runs on 10 hits with 5 Ks. Kluber is in danger of potentially getting shifted to the bullpen as Garrett Whitlock nears a return from the injured list and the emergence of Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello along with James Paxton being healthy will likely result in Kluber not having a spot in the rotation

* Miles Mikolas pitched 6.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 10 hits with 1 walk & 7 Ks earning a no decision

* Justin Turner continues to swing a hot bat for the Red Sox as he went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and a HR as Turner is now hitting .335 with 3 HR & 20 RBI.

* Masataka Yoshida homered for the second straight game as he went 2 for 5 with a HR & 2 RBI. Yoshida is now hitting .242 with 6 HR & 17 RBI on the season. Triston Casas had a big day at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double & HR and Casas is now hitting .330 with 2 HR & 13 RBI on the season

* The Cardinals were led by Lars Nootbaar who crushed a 438 foot blast to RF for a big 3-run go ahead HR in the top of the 9th. Nolan Arenado also went 2 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI as he continued to punish Red Sox pitching in the series

* The Red Sox will remain at home as the Seattle Mariners come to Fenway Park to begin a 3 game series tomorrow. The Mariners come in to the series with a record of 16-24 which has them in 4th place in the AL West sitting 9 games back of the 1st place Texas Rangers. Tanner Houck will be on the mound to open the series for Boston while George Kirby gets the start for Seattle

Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #42 of Season

Seattle Mariners (16-24) @ Boston Red Sox (26-15)
Pitching Matchup – George Kirby vs Tanner Houck

The Mariners and Red Sox each pushed across a run in the 1st inning and the score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the 4th when the Red Sox bats came alive as Justin Turner picked up his 2nd RBI of the night with a RBI double and Rafael Devers crushed a 2-run HR to open up a 4-1 lead for Boston. Tanner Houck was dealing on the mound for Boston and was up to 10 Ks through 6 innings of work and we would head to the 7th inning with Boston leading 4-1. Houck was up over 100 pitches and finished off an excellent outing by retiring the side in the top of the 7th and picking up two more strikeouts bringing his total to 12 Ks in the ball game. Gabe Speier pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 7th to send the game to the 8th inning with the Red Sox up 4-1. The Red Sox bullpen failed for the second straight day as Chris Martin took over for the top of the 8th replacing Houck and the Mariners would get singles from Kelenic & Crawford before Julio Rodriguez launched a 3-run HR into the monster seats tying the game 4-4. Teoscar Hernandez and Ty France followed with ground balls that found the holes to put runners on the corners with 1 out and Martin would leave the mound to boos from the Fenway crowd as Josh Winckowski came in to a tough spot looking for a double play ball with Eugenio Suarez coming up. Winckowski located a sinker perfectly getting Suarez to hit a tailor made double play ball to SS but Hernandez bobbled the ball momentarily which delayed the play just enough for Suarez to beat out the double play at first base allowing Hernandez to score and give the Mariners a 5-4 lead. Trevor Gott retired the side in the bottom of the 8th and we would go to the 9th inning with Seattle leading 5-4. Richard Bleier pitched a scoreless top of the 9th for Boston and the Red Sox would come to bat in the bottom of the 9th trailing 5-4 with Paul Sewald coming on to try and close it out for the Mariners. Sewald struck out Justin Turner on a nasty slider to start the inning before Rafael Devers lined a single to CF and the Red Sox had the tying run on base with 1 out. Kike Hernandez gave the ball a ride to LF but Kelenic would get back to make the catch on the warning track and the Sox were down to their final out with Triston Casas who has been swinging a hot bat of late coming up. Casas would hit a chopper to Crawford at SS and he would make the play for the final out as the Mariners come from behind to take the opener of this 3 game series 5-4

GAME NOTES
* The Red Sox bullpen implodes again as their recent struggles continue and the Mariners take the opener of this 3 game series 5-4

* The Red Sox have lost 3 in a row and fall to 26-16 while the Mariners improve to 17-24 on the season

* Tanner Houck was outstanding for Boston as he pitched 7 strong innings holding the Mariners to 1 run on 5 hits while racking up 12 Ks and was in line for the win before the bullpen implosion

* George Kirby earned a no decision as he pitched 5 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 Ks

* Rafael Devers went 2 for 4 with a HR & 2 RBI and is now hitting .329 with 14 HR & 34 RBI

* Justin Turner continues to swing a hot bat as he went 1 for 3 with a double & 2 RBI

* Julio Rodriguez had a big night for Seattle as he went 2 for 4 with a double, HR & 3 RBI and had the big knock as he crushed a 3-run HR off CHris Martin in the 8th inning turning a 4-1 deficit into a tie ball game

* The Red Sox bullpen has been horrendous over the last few games as they have had a complete meltdown in the late innings the last two games. Chris Martin has really struggled as he allowed 7 runs while only recording 1 out over the last two days and his ERA has blown up to 7.71 on the season as a result

* The Red Sox and Mariners will play the 2nd game of this 3 game series tomorrow with Nick Pivetta scheduled to pitch for Boston while Seattle will counter with Luis Castillo

Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #43 of Season

Seattle Mariners (17-24) @ Boston Red Sox (26-16)
Pitching Matchup – Luis Castillo vs Nick Pivetta

Nick Pivetta and Luis Castillo were locked in a pitchers duel as neither pitcher had allowed a run through 5 innings and the game would head to the 6th inning with the score tied 0-0. Seattle was threatening in the top of the 6th after Pablo Reyes booted a routine ground ball to SS allowing Teoscar Hernandez to reach and Eugenio Suarez ground rule double put two runners in scoring position for Taylor Trammell with 1 out. Pivetta would lock up Trammell with a filthy curveball for a huge K and had two strikes on Tom Murphy but was unable to put him away and escape the jam as Murphy fouled off a couple tough two strike pitches before dropping a soft liner into LF for a RBI single as two runs score to give Seattle a 2-0 lead. Pivetta would finish his outing on his 100th pitch of the night getting Kelenic to fly out and end the frame. Castillo worked around a single by Verdugo in the bottom of the 6th sending the game to the 7th inning with the Mariners leading 2-0. The Mariners put runners on the corners against Joely Rodriguez for Teoscar Hernandez with 1 out in the top of the 7th and Alex Cora would go to Justin Garza looking for a double play ball. Garza made a great pitch to strikeout Hernandez for a big 2nd out but he would leave a pitch over the plate to Ty France who hammered it in the gap in left-center to drive in two runs with a RBI double increasing the Seattle lead to 4-0. Castillo continued to dominate on the mound with another 1-2-3 inning to send the game to the 8th inning with Seattle up 4-0. The Mariners blew the game wide open as they exploded with 2 out 3 consecutive RBI singles from JP Crawford, Julio Rodriguez and Teoscar Hernandez making it 7-0. Boston went down quietly in the bottom of the 8th and we would head to the 9th inning. Chris Martin came on to get some work in and try to get past his recent struggles and allowed a solo HR by Taylor Trammell in the top of the 9th making it 8-0 and Castillo would return to the mound for the bottom of the looking to finish off the complete game shutout. Castillo retired Turner to begin the inning but Rafael Devers would spoil the shutout as he launched a 420 foot bomb over the bullpens in RF for a solo HR getting Boston on the board 8-1. Castillo would record the final two outs and the Red Sox fall to the Mariners 8-1

GAME NOTES
* The game was scoreless until the 6th inning before the Mariners exploded for 8 runs in the late innings on their way to a 8-1 victory and Seattle has taken the first two games of the series

* The Red Sox losing streak reaches 4 games as they fall to 26-17 while the Mariners win their 4th in a row to improve to 18-24 on the season

* Nick Pivetta pitched well despite learning that this would be his last start for a while and he would be moving to the bullpen. Pivetta went 6 innings allowing 2 unearned runs on 7 hits with 2 walks & 8 Ks taking the loss to fall to 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA

* Luis Castillo pitched an absolute gem for Seattle as he threw a complete game going 9 innings allowing 1 run on 7 hits with 3 Ks as he earns the win to improve to 5-2 with a 3.39 ERA on the season

* Rafael Devers supplied the only offense for Boston going 2 for 4 with his 15th HR of the season

* JP Crawford and Julio Rodriguez each had 3 hit nights for Seattle and Taylor Trammell hit his 1st HR of the season after his recent call up

* The Red Sox had used a 6 man rotation the last couple times through and will be going back to a 5-man rotation as James Paxton has pitched well and is healthy and Garrett Whitlock is on the verge of returning from injury. The Red Sox will be moving Nick Pivetta and Corey Kluber to the bullpen when Whitlock returns and Boston plans to move forward with a rotation of James Paxton, Chris Sale, Garrett Whitlock, Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello

* The Red Sox and Mariners will play the 3rd and final game of the series tomorrow with the Mariners looking to complete the 3 game sweep. Brayan Bello takes the mound for Boston looking to play the role of stopper and avoid the sweep while bringing the Red Sox 4 game skid to an end while Marco Gonzales gets the start for Seattle

Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #44 of Season

Seattle Mariners (18-24) @ Boston Red Sox (26-17)
Pitching Matchup – Marco Gonzales vs Brayan Bello

Brayan Bello and Marco Gonzales were both pitching well early and the game was scoreless through 4 innings. Bello retired the side in the top of the 5th and the Red Sox would open the scoring in the bottom of the 5th when Jarren Duran led off the inning with a single and came all the way around to score from first base when Triston Casas hit a towering fly ball off the green monster in left-center for a RBI double giving Boston a 1-0 lead. Bello struck out Julio Rodriguez to end the top of the 6th. The Red Sox were threatening after Justin Turner walked with 2 outs and a double by Rafael Devers put two runners in scoring position for Jarren Duran. Gonzales went to a fastball away and Duran stayed on it driving it deep to LF and off the green monster for a RBI double as Turner & Devers score to make it 3-0. Penn Murfee came on to replace Gonzales on the mound and retired Kike Hernandez on a fly ball out to send the game to the 7th inning with Boston leading 3-0. Bello allowed a 2 out double to AJ Pollock in the top of the 7th but came right back to strikeout Taylor Trammell looking on a 98 mph fastball to end the frame. The Red Sox went to work with 2 outs again in the bottom of the 7th as Pablo Reyes doubled and Rob Refsnyder followed with a ground ball up the middle for a RBI single making it 4-0. Bello recorded his 8th K as he retired the side in order in the top of the 8th and the Red Sox would add two more runs on RBI singles by Kike Hernandez and Connor Wong in the bottom of the 8th to send the game to the 9th inning with Boston leading 6-0. Bello returned to the mound at 88 pitches for the top of the 9th looking to finish off the complete game shutout. JP Crawford led off by flying out to Tapia in RF but Julio Rodriguez would turn on a fastball and launch it into the monster seats for a solo HR getting Seattle on the board at 6-1 and ruining the shutout for Bello. Alex Cora left Bello in the game and he would strikeout Cal Raleigh and get Ty France to ground out for the final two outs and the Red Sox win 6-1

GAME NOTES
* The Red Sox take the finale of this 3 game series 6-1 to avoid the sweep

* The Red Sox losing streak ends at 4 games as they improve to 27-17 while the Mariners win streak is snapped at 4 games and they fall to 18-25 on the season

* Brayan Bello was outstanding as he dominated pitching a complete game allowing 1 run on 5 hits with 9 Ks as he gets the win to improve to 3-2 with a 2.90 ERA

* Marco Gonzales pitched 5.2 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 1 walk & 3 Ks as he took the loss falling to 1-2 with a 3.44 ERA

* Jarren Duran went 2 for 4 with a double & 2 RBI while Rafael Devers stayed hot going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles raising his average to .337

* Julio Rodriguez supplied the only offense for Seattle going 3 for 4 with a HR and is now hitting .302 with 9 HR & 28 RBI on the season

* The Red Sox will have an off day tomorrow as they will travel to the West coast to begin a 9 game road. The Red Sox begin the trip in San Diego where they will take on the Padres for a 3 game series at Petco Park in what should be an entertaining series between division leadeing teams as the Red Sox are tied with the Yankees for 1st place in the AL East and the Padres are tied with the Dodgers for 1st place in the NL West. The Red Sox will also get their first look at their former star SS in a Padres uniform after Xander Bogaerts signed a massive contract with San Diego in free agency this past off-season. James Paxton will make his 2nd start of the season as he takes the mound for Boston while Blake Snell takes the mound for San Diego

Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #45 of Season

Boston Red Sox (27-17) @ San Diego Padres (29-15)
Pitching Matchup – James Paxton vs Blake Snell

The Red Sox are in San Diego to begin a big 3 game series against the Padres wit h both teams currently tied for 1st place in their respective divisions. The game will also feature Xander Bogaerts facing the Red Sox for the first time after leaving the Sox to sign a free agent deal with the Padres this past off-season.

Blake Snell and James Paxton were locked in a pitchers duel as they both were through 5 shutout innings on the mound and we would head to the 6th inning tied 0-0. Justin Turner lined a rocket in the gap for a double leading off the top of the 6th and Padres manager Bob Melvin would come out to get Snell and make the move 8to Drew Carlton out of the bullpen. The move to Carlton was questionable to begin with as Snell was only at 81 pitches on the night and it only looked worse when Carlton left a sinker up in the zone to Rafael Devers who crushed it 411 feet for a 2-run HR to CF giving Boston a 2-0 lead. Paxton worked around a single by Nelson Cruz in the bottom of the 6th to send the game to the 7th inning with Boston leading 2-0. Carlton got Turner to pop out stranding a pair to end the top of the 7th and Paxton retired the first two batters before a single by Brandon Dixon with 2 outs brought Xander Bogaerts to the plate. Paxton would get Bogaerts to fly out to Refsnyder in LF ending the 7th and sending the game to the 8th inning with the Red Sox leading 2-0. Tim Hill pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 8th for San Diego while Paxton returned to the mound for the bottom of the 8th. Paxton retired the side in order getting Cronenworth to ground out before recording back to back Ks as Juan Soto couldn't catch up to high heat and went down swinging while Fernando Tatis went down looking a a fastball on the edge of the plate making it 8 shutout innings from Paxton and we would head to the 9th inning with Boston up 2-0. Luis Garcia took over on the mound for San Diego in the top of the 9th and retired the Sox 1-2-3 to send the game to the bottom of the 9th where the Padres would come up to bat trailing 2-0 and Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen was coming on to try and close it out for Boston. Nelson Cruz stayed on a fastball away and lined it into the RF corner for a double to lead off the bottom of the 9th for the Padres. Jansen came back with a big K of Ha-Seong Kim and Matt Carpenter would come out of the dugout to pinch hit for Trent Grisham with 1 out. Carpenter and Jansen would battle to a full count before Jansen froze Carpenter with a back door slider for the K and the Padres were down to their final out with Luis Campusano coming to the plate. Jansen would get Campusano to hit the ball on the ground to SS where Hernandez made the play and fired a strong throw over to Casas for the final out as the Red Sox take the opener of this 3 game series 2-0

GAME NOTES
* The Red Sox get an outstanding pitching performance from James Paxton and Rafael Devers supplied the games only offense with a 2-run HR in the 6th as the Red Sox take the opener of this 3 game series 2-0

* The Red Sox improve to 28-17 while the Padres fall to 29-16 on the season

* James Paxton was making his 2nd start of the season for Boston since returning from Tommy John surgery and pitched 8 shutout innings scattering 5 hits with 2 walks & 6 Ks as he earns the win to improve to 2-0. Paxton has been lights out in his first two outings as he allowed 1 run in 6 innings against St Louis and now pitched 8 shutout innings against San Diego as he is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA through his first two starts

* Blake Snell pitched 5 shutout innings before Bob Melvin yanked him after allowing a base runner in the 6th and Snell would be charged with 1 run on 5 hits with 2 walks & 5 Ks as he gets tagged with the loss falling to 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA on the season

* Rafael Devers continues to swing a hot bat as he supplied the games only offense going 1 for 4 with a 2-run HR in the 6th inning. Devers is now hitting .335 with 16 HR & 37 RBI on the season.

* Triston Casas continues his recent hot stretch as he went 2 for 4 with his 15th double of the season and is not hitting .328

* Xander Bogaerts faced the Red Sox for the first time after signing a massive free agent contract with the Padres in the off-season and Bogaerts went 2 for 3 with a single, double and a walk and is hitting .311 on the season

* The Red Sox and Padres will play the 2nd game of this 3 game series tomorrow with Chris Sale getting the start for Boston while Joe Musgrove gets the start for San Diego

Re: TNK MLB 23 SLIDERS

TNK - BOSTON RED SOX FRANCHISE
Game #46 of Season

Boston Red Sox (28-17) @ San Diego Padres (29-16)
Pitching Matchup – Chris Sale vs Joe Musgrove

The Red Sox opened the scoring against Joe Musgrove in the top of the 3rd when Enmanuel Valdez launched a solo HR down the RF line to give Boston a 1-0 lead. The Padres were threatening in the bottom of the 3rd as they loaded the bases with nobody out but Chris Sale would get a huge strikeout of Xander Bogaerts and then got Ha-Seong Kim to ground into an inning ending 6-4-3 double play to escape the jam and send the game to the 4th inning with Boston leading 1-0. Musgrove retired the Sox in the top of the 4th while Sale had two strikes on Nelson Cruz with 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th but could not put him away as Cruz turned on a fastball and hooked it into the LF corner for a RBI double tying the game 1-1. Austin Nola followed with a soft liner into CF for a RBI single as Cruz scores and the Padres had a 2-1 lead after 4 innings. Musgrove picked up two Ks in the top of the 5th and had allowed just 1 hit while Sale recorded 3 Ks in the bottom of the 5th as both pitchers had piled up 9 Ks through 5 innings and we would head to the 6th inning with San Diego leading 2-1. Musgrove fell behind in the count to Rafael Devers leading off the top of the 7th and Devers lined a rocket that just cleared the wall in RF for a solo HR tying the game 2-2 and that would be all for Musgrove as Tim Hill came in from the pen to take over on the mound. Jarren Duran followed with a single and advance to second on a sac bunt by Raimel Tapia but Hill would get Hernandez and Valdez to fly out ending the threat. Sale finished off his outing by recording 2 more Ks bringing his total to 12 in a scoreless bottom of the 7th to send the game to the 8th inning tied at 2-2. Domingo Tapia pitched a scoreless top of the 8th for San Diego and John Schreiber was on to pitch the bottom of the 8th for Boston. Schreiber struck out Kim to begin the inning before leaving a sinker over the plate to Juan Soto who launched a solo HR to right-center giving the Padres a 3-2 lead. Fernando Tatis singled and Matt Carpenter lined a ball into the RF corner for a RBI double adding to the lead 4-2. Schreiber would get the final two outs and we would head to the 9th inning with the Red Sox coming up to bat trailing 4-2 and Josh Hader making his way in to try and close it out for San Diego. Devers led off the top of the 9th with a single to RF and Jarren Duran dropped a liner into CF for a single as Boston had the tying run on base with nobody out. Rob Refsnyder came on to pinch hit for Raimel Tapia and flew out to Grisham in CF and Kike Hernandez struck out on a nasty slider from Hader and suddenly the Red Sox were down to their final out. Justin Turner would pinch hit for Enmanuel Valdez with the game on the line and battle to a full count and the runners were in motion as Turner lined a fastball from Hader into left-center scoring Devers and Duran would race around all the way from first base with the tying run but Turner would be thrown out after taking a wide turn and retreating to first base but the Red Sox would stay alive as the game now moved to the bottom of the 9th tied 4-4 with the Padres coming up with a chance to walk off with a victory. Jake Cronenworth singled to lead off the bottom of the 9th off Schreiber and Brandon Dixon bunted him into scoring position setting the stage for Xander Bogaerts to come to the plate with 1 out and a chance to be the hero against his former team. Kike Hernandez made a nice play ranging to his left to retire Bogaerts as Cronenworth moved up to 3rd base bringing Ha-Seong Kim to the plate with 2 outs and the winning run 90 feet away on 3rd base. Schreiber would get Kim to pop out and send the game to extra innings. Masataka Yoshida delivered a two out RBI single off Brent Honeywell in the top of the 10th and Casas followed with a single bringing up Devers with a chance to pad the lead but he would chase a fastball out of the zone to send the game to the bottom of the 10th with the Padres coming up trailing 5-4. Kenley Jansen came on to pitch for Boston looking to close it out which will be tough with the Padres starting the inning with the tying run on second base. Jansen executed a perfect back door cutter to freeze Juan Soto who went down looking for the 1st out while Fernando Tatis swung at the first pitch he saw and popped out to Casas on the infield for the 2nd out and the Padres were quickly down to their final out with Matt Carpenter coming to the plate with Kim still on second base representing the potential tying run. Jansen would wind up walking Carpenter to put two men on and bring Nelson Cruz to the plate. Jansen would go to a two seam fastball away with the count 1 & 1 and Cruz would get the barrel on it driving it high and deep to CF sending Duran back to the track where he would leap at the wall and the ball came down just out of his reach for a dramatic 3-run walk off HR by Nelson Cruz to give the Padres a 7-5 win
