Re: The Alaska Warriors Reboot

Year 2 - Weeks 9 & 10

Vs. Utah State

Quarterback play was a thing of horror today. Both Alaskan quarterbacks combined to be 15/41 for 165 yards. Breedlove started the game 0/6 and was replaced in the third by Riggs who promptly went 1/3 with an interception... Yikes. Roberson was able to get some room on the ground, but the fact that they were down for most of the game, Alaska wasn't at liberty to be able to run later in the game.

Alaska was only down 7-6 in the second quarter, but USU scored 10 straight in the last two minutes to take a 17-6 lead. The only score in the third was a USU field goal, and Alaska was never able to come back.

Breedlove also threw an interception. His came on a spot route where the receiver started moving backwards like he was trying to run without the ball instead of boxing out, and the defender picked it off.

At Western Michigan

This was quite an entertaining game. It went back and forth all game.

Alaska opened the scoring with RB Roberson catching an angle route on fourth down and going 39 yards. WMU answered.

It looked like WMU had seized momentum near the end of the first half. With 2:30 left the Broncos took a 17-10 lead, and with 19 seconds left they scored again on a 47-yard pass. Skyler Ware answered with a 96-yard return for a touchdown.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the third.

In the fourth, Alaska tied the game with a Roberson rush TD. With 3:09 left, WMU took the lead with an 84-yard rush on third and 1. Alaska was able to drive down and tie with a Quicy Outlaw TD catch with 11 seconds left.

In overtime, the Broncos scored on the very first play. Alaska drove to the goal line. On fourth and 4, they threw the ball right at the goal line, but the receiver was unable to break the plane and the game was over. Western Michigan won 45-38.

Breedlove played well. He had one interception, which again came from a receiver changing his route after the ball was thrown. The receiver was running a slant, and when the ball was thrown, he cut up field behind the linebacker instead of in front. I rewatched it because I thought I saw it but I wanted to confirm, and that's exactly what happened.

Re: The Alaska Warriors Reboot

Year 2 - Weeks 11 & 12

Vs. #19 Ohio

Finally, a NORMAL feeling game! It was refreshing to have both teams play defense. It felt great not having quarterbacks slinging the ball around. It produced Alaska's least attempts all year, and possibly all dynasty with only 23 total attempts.

Ohio came in with the nation's number 1 offense, lead by Heisman finalist Adam Cummings. Adam came in at 216/299, 3,170 yards, 43 TDs and only 4 Interceptions. He didn't throw much today as the ground game was solid, but he was only able to muster 31 yards on 19 carries himself. He was really a non-factor today.

Ohio seized momentum with an electric 70-yard run early in the game. Alaska answered early in the second quarter with a touchdown of their own. Ohio would score again a few minutes later. Alaska would drive to close the half, but would be stopped short on fourth and goal from the 2.

Defenses traded punts for most of the third, but with 2:38 remaining, Alaska scored to finally tie the game. Alaska would again score a touchdown early in the fourth. Ohio would drive. On third down, they completed a long pass to get the first down but a holding penalty brought them back. They wouldn't convert and would have to add a field goal with 3:11 left to make it a 21-17 game, but Alaska would hold on with a clutch 19-yard reception on third and 6 and complete their third win of the season and second over a ranked team.

The story of the game was turnovers. Both teams took excellent care of the ball, but Ohio missed two field goals, including one off the upright, which ultimately cost them the game.

At #20 USC

To end the season, Alaska traveled to #20 USC. USC was ranked generously as they were only 7-4, but they were ranked nonetheless and posed a huge challenge. The story today was third downs and red zone. Alaska was 9-14 on third down, good for 64%, while USC was only 3-8 (37%). In the red zone, Alaska converted 3 of their 4 opportunities to touchdowns while USC converted 2/6 into touchdowns and one field goal. Darrin Pierre also returned from his long injury.

Quarterback play was also important. Breedlove went 23/33 for 250 yards while Chris Sullivan went 20/26, but had three interceptions, including two disaster picks late in the fourth quarter.

The game started off Alaska ball, but two holding penalties back-to-back stalled the drive. USC ran the ball well with RB Brennan Buckley, who averaged over 10 yards per carry. Nearing the end of the half, down 14-7, USC punted all the way to the 1 inch line. Alaska began a drive with 3 minutes remaining, and would get to the red zone before an ill-advised pick. Still, they went in to half time only down 7.

USC would open the third with a touchdown pass, but Alaska would answer. Entering the fourth, Alaska was down 21-14, but they'd score on a 23-yard pass from Breedlove to reserve tight end Justin Tate to tie the game. USC would add a field goal to take a 24-21 lead, but with 3:48 left, Roberson would add the final touchdown for Alaska to pull the 28-24 upset.

Bryce Owen set a team record today. He had two clutch picks in the fourth, including one that set up the final touchdown drive. That pick actually came after Breedlove was picked for a second time. The senior sure picked a heck of a way to leave.

Issue:

As it stands, I have five playoff worthy teams with only four spots. Three are locked in.

UAB (13-0), Oklahoma (12-1), and Georgia Tech (12-1). The last spot is something I'm having trouble with.

There are two two-loss conference champions who have an opportunity. Tennessee is 11-2. The combined record of their opponents is 86-72. They have a 44-35 win over #1 Oklahoma, 41-35 win at#6 South Carolina, and 51-48 win in OT vs. #20 Ole Miss in the conference championship game.

They have losses to 5-7 Auburn 28-59 as well as #11 Georgia 35-52. They faced 4 ranked teams and went 3-1.

Northwestern is the other team. They went 11-2. The combined record of their opponents was 83-74. They have a 49-27 win at#14 PSU, 38-21 win at #15 Iowa, 52-28 win vs. #10 Wisconsin, and a 38-28 win vs #23 Michigan in the conference championship game.

They have back-to-back losses at #5 Notre Dame 28-59 as well as #16 Nebraska 28-38. They faced 6 ranked teams and went 4-2.

My question is who would you choose? If UAB had a loss and didn't dominate all of their opponents it'd be easy. If there was only a one-loss difference it'd be easy. But they went 13-0 and these two teams went 11-2, and UAB is currently rated 97 overall, so they should be in IMO.

Let me know what you think. I have my own choice atm but I'll wait to see if anybody has any suggestions. Thanks!

I gotta say Tennessee. Look forward to seeing how it turns out.

What makes you say Tennessee? I would’ve said Northwestern off first glance. I’m going to do some more digging before I make the decision. Thanks for your reply!

Northwestern. If irl, Ohio State's bad loss to unranked Iowa kept them out the playoff, Tennessee's bad loss to 5-7 Auburn is keeping them out.

They beat #1 Oklahoma and their combined opponents Records gives them the nod since they have the same records.

I want to see the Rematch. Lol

Re: The Alaska Warriors Reboot

So I did some more looking into it. Here's what I found:

Average Team Ratings: Wins

Tennessee: 90 92 87
Northwestern: 91 95 88

Average Team Ratings: Losses

Tennessee: 92 96 90
Northwestern: 97 99 93

Average Win Minus Lowest Rated:

Tennessee: 93 95 89
Northwestern 92 96 89

Points Margin:

Tennessee: +121
Northwestern: +147

Margin of Victories:

Tennessee: 15.4
Northwestern: 17.1

Margin/game including losses:

Tennessee: 9.3
Northwestern: 11.4

To me, Northwestern is the team that should get in. They just have better quality losses, but their issue is those losses were the 10th and 11th game versus the 4th and 6th game for Tennessee. So I'm going to use Northwestern.
