Re: Reviving the Boom | A Seattle Seahawks franchise story

Seattle -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Seahawks fanatics. In this blog, I have some tidbits, musings and rumors to discuss. I’ll be doing a weekly report on all things related the Seattle Seahawks. That could be an injury take, trade takes and even mock draft takes as the season progresses. Hope you join the discussion!

2025 Seattle Seahawk Draft Recap

• The biggest thing the Seahawks didn't do:

Seattle opted to not draft a defensive end, thus putting more pressure on Chase Young and the others to form a rotational crop of players who can make an impact. At Renton, you can best believe the Seahawks will be praying Sam Williams and Chase Young can be their long term future defensive ends which brings stability to a position that didn’t get that many sacks last season. Leonard Williams was their best pass rusher and he’s on the wrong side of 30 now. Seattle are essentially banking on either Williams or Young to have more of an impact than what they are predicted.

• The one thing the Seahawks definitely got right:

Seattle’s offensive line has been weak the past two seasons. They rectified it with the additions of Charles Cross and Jackson Powers-Johnson in the first rounds and they’ve drafted a few offensive linemen who should have futures in Seattle. The Seahawks had eight selections and spent three of them on the offensive line. They potentially got two starters on the offensive line out of this draft, so that’s something they definitely did right.

• What was my favourite selection from the Seahawks?:

While people in Seattle will love the Malaki Starks selection, it’s their second round pick in Jonah Savaiinaea for me. Seattle need a new offensive guard and he fits the bill. He brings some Samoan strength and nastiness to a line. Their running game will get better now and so will protecting the quarterback. Savaiinaea projection was anywhere from the late first to second/third round selection. He fell to the Seahawks at 58 and they quickly called him as their second round selection.

• Which prospect could make the most noise?

Keep an eye on fifth-round pick Earnest Greene III. Although he dropped from a projected first-round selection, he has the potential to compete with Anthony Bradford and Riley Reiff/Jonah Savaiinaea for a starting guard position, or possibly become a future starting guard.

• Seattle has invited the following veterans and undrafted rookies(*) to training camp:
  1. QB Jarrett Sitdham
  2. C Mason Cole
  3. RT Jackson Carman
  4. MLB Myles Jack
  5. P Dom Maggio
  6. CB Cory Trice Jr
  7. RB Dae Dae Hunter*
  8. TE Mitchell Evans*
  9. LT Ozzy Trapilo*
  10. LE Wesley Bailey*
  11. FS Seyi Oladipo*
  12. K Dean Janikowski*

• The heat is really starting to kick in here at Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, Washington. It’s in the middle of summer and that means the new season is right around the corner and so are training camp battles and the preseason. Here’s a few notes I’ve been taking from training camp so far:

• Quarterback Sam Howell has really been leading the Seahawks so far. He’s become their unquestioned leader and he’s viewed as the franchise quarterback. The Seahawks had numerous opportunities to draft a franchise quarterback in the draft this spring but opted to roll with Howell, who is in the final year of his contract. He’s joined by Mason Rudolph and Jarrett Stidham who pose no threat to his starting job. His throws have looked crisp this summer and with another training camp in his resume, Howell should be feeling more comfortable with the offense.

• The Seahawks traded for Trenton Simpson last season which reunited him with head coach Mike Macdonald, who drafted him in Baltimore. They traded away Tyler Lockett and banked on Simpson becoming their next Bobby Wagner whilst they hoped Devontez Walker would turn into something. Simpson played well last season. He’s now the fully fledged starter in their 34 base and has been taking snaps in passing situations, which suggests Kenneth Murray is coming off the field when the Seahawks need more defensive backs. He’s been sideline-to-sideline this summer and he’s due for a breakout campaign. Devontez Walker surprised everyone with a strong rookie season and he’s becoming a top target for Howell this summer.

• Howell’s been performing well this summer but he also needs to be protected well. Seattle could potentially have two new starters on the offensive line. Jonah Savaiinaea has been taking the first string snaps at left guard while rookie Earnest Greene III and Cam’Ron Johnson have been competing with Anthony Bradford and Abraham Lucas. Seattle has rapidly rebuilt their offensive line; depending on which line-up they go with, all starting offensive lineman will have been drafted no later the 2022 draft which equals experience of max three seasons.

• The Seahawks won’t say it, but you should be watching the defensive end positions very closely this summer. Leonard Williams and Sam Williams are the starting edge rushers, but that could change with how Chase Young develops this summer. The average starting salary is $7.33M for a defensive end. Chase Young is counting $6.21M against the cap this season. Why pay him a nearly starting salary if he’s not starting? If Young doesn’t start at defensive end, he could potentially pivot to OLB in their 34 system. There’s no guarantee Uchenna Nwosu will start either. Seattle could potentially trade him or bench him. His play has been inconsistent in Seattle and they have plenty of players who could fill in at OLB. Nwosu’s main challenger is Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who will try and wrestle the starting spot from him after joining from Tampa Bay this free agency.

• Kicker is also a spot to watch out for. The Seahawks signed Riley Patterson and then signed Dean Janikowski. Both will be battling each other for the kicker position this camp. Patterson will have the advantage but the Seahawks haven’t wedded themselves to the presumed starting kicker – if you look at his contract, the penalty won’t be too great to not consider cutting him if his performance warrants it.

• It's the start of the regular season, which means the Seahawks' roster and depth chart will be revealed after this post, once I've gathered the details from my sources. Here's some notes from the final week of the pre-season.

• Seattle has named second round rookie Jonah Savaiinaea as the starting left guard. Anthony Bradford beat out rookie Earnest Greene III for the starting right guard position and the Seahawks will start Chase Young at right defensive end with Sam Williams manning the other end. It was expected Leonard Williams will be playing in a reduced role. Here’s another important but minor change. In nickel and dime situations, Trent Simpson will stay on the field, not Kenneth Murray Jr.

• Here’s some injuries to note going into the season. RB J.K. Dobbins broke his hand during the pre-season and was placed on injured reserve. Royce Freeman has also been placed on injured reserve after being busted for using PEDs; he will serve a four game suspension to start the season. Rookie right guard Cam’Ron Johnson suffered a dislocated hip in the final game of the preseason and will be out for the first four weeks of the season. WR Devontez Walker will miss the season opener after suffering from a dislocated ankle.

• The Seattle Seahawks have made some transactions this week. Following Cleveland poaching Ozzy Trapilo from their newly announced practice squad, the Seahawks went out and signed FS Lewis Cine to their 53-man roster and signed WR Jalin Hyatt to their practice squad. The biggest surprise was the demotion of cornerback Chau Wade-Smith to the practice squad. He was called up during their postseason run but was targeted during the preseason and didn’t play as well as the Seahawks would have hoped.

The following players were released from the roster:
  • WR Dareke Young
  • LG Tremayne Anchrum Jr
  • C Mason Cole
  • RE Jalen Redmond
  • SS Josh Thompson
  • P Dom Maggio
  • RB Benny Snell
  • RE Jeffrey Gunter
  • MLB Myles Jack
  • FS Jerrick Reed II

The following players were signed to the Practice Squad:
  • FS Seyi Oladipo
  • MLB Drake Thomas
  • LE Wesley Bailey
  • RB Kenny McIntosh
  • TE Mitchell Evans
  • RB Dae Dae Hunter
  • K Dean Janikowski
  • LT Ozzy Trapilo (Cleveland Browns signed to 53-man roster)
  • MLB Easton Mascarenas-Arnold
  • CB Chau Smith-Wade
  • ROLB Derick Hall
  • WR Jalin Hyatt (signed to the practice squad following Ozzy Trapilo being acquired)
