Seattle -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Seahawks fanatics. In this blog, I have some tidbits, musings and rumors to discuss. I’ll be doing a weekly report on all things related the Seattle Seahawks. That could be an injury take, trade takes and even mock draft takes as the season progresses. Hope you join the discussion!
• The heat is really starting to kick in here at Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, Washington. It’s in the middle of summer and that means the new season is right around the corner and so are training camp battles and the preseason. Here’s a few notes I’ve been taking from training camp so far:
• Quarterback Sam Howell has really been leading the Seahawks so far. He’s become their unquestioned leader and he’s viewed as the franchise quarterback. The Seahawks had numerous opportunities to draft a franchise quarterback in the draft this spring but opted to roll with Howell, who is in the final year of his contract. He’s joined by Mason Rudolph and Jarrett Stidham who pose no threat to his starting job. His throws have looked crisp this summer and with another training camp in his resume, Howell should be feeling more comfortable with the offense.
• The Seahawks traded for Trenton Simpson last season which reunited him with head coach Mike Macdonald, who drafted him in Baltimore. They traded away Tyler Lockett and banked on Simpson becoming their next Bobby Wagner whilst they hoped Devontez Walker would turn into something. Simpson played well last season. He’s now the fully fledged starter in their 34 base and has been taking snaps in passing situations, which suggests Kenneth Murray is coming off the field when the Seahawks need more defensive backs. He’s been sideline-to-sideline this summer and he’s due for a breakout campaign. Devontez Walker surprised everyone with a strong rookie season and he’s becoming a top target for Howell this summer.
• Howell’s been performing well this summer but he also needs to be protected well. Seattle could potentially have two new starters on the offensive line. Jonah Savaiinaea has been taking the first string snaps at left guard while rookie Earnest Greene III and Cam’Ron Johnson have been competing with Anthony Bradford and Abraham Lucas. Seattle has rapidly rebuilt their offensive line; depending on which line-up they go with, all starting offensive lineman will have been drafted no later the 2022 draft which equals experience of max three seasons.
• The Seahawks won’t say it, but you should be watching the defensive end positions very closely this summer. Leonard Williams and Sam Williams are the starting edge rushers, but that could change with how Chase Young develops this summer. The average starting salary is $7.33M for a defensive end. Chase Young is counting $6.21M against the cap this season. Why pay him a nearly starting salary if he’s not starting? If Young doesn’t start at defensive end, he could potentially pivot to OLB in their 34 system. There’s no guarantee Uchenna Nwosu will start either. Seattle could potentially trade him or bench him. His play has been inconsistent in Seattle and they have plenty of players who could fill in at OLB. Nwosu’s main challenger is Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, who will try and wrestle the starting spot from him after joining from Tampa Bay this free agency.
• Kicker is also a spot to watch out for. The Seahawks signed Riley Patterson and then signed Dean Janikowski. Both will be battling each other for the kicker position this camp. Patterson will have the advantage but the Seahawks haven’t wedded themselves to the presumed starting kicker – if you look at his contract, the penalty won’t be too great to not consider cutting him if his performance warrants it.
