What's the story on using SSD's instead of HDD's? Is there a significant improvement in gaming if you use SSD? In order to take advantage do you need to buy a drive big enough to install the OS and Games?

One of the biggest is that they should last longer because there are no moving parts. I've read all kinds of performance reviews, some report that it doesn't improve performance that much (not even talking about gaming though).

I have a 128 GB SSD in my netbook for work and the boot time (hit the power button to the W7 login screen) went from 37 seconds on a HDD to 19 on an SSD. However once the machine is up and running I don't notice a huge difference but it's also a weenie little netbook.

I need to do more research on them, but I plan on getting I think a 120GB when I build mine. I am building for the next 5 years though. So I have no reason not to. SSD + HDD to put my music and other non-essential files.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOPS#Examples
Standard HDD = 100 IOPS
Decent SSD = 60,000 IOPS

Ollie - that's what a lot of people are doing but I'm not sure I'm going to go that route. I think I'd rather wait a few years until SSDs come way down in price and just abandon HDDs at that point. Not sure the benefits of SSD are potent enough for me to justify spending all that money on 128GB of storage.

I don't have an ssd, but from what I heard load times are the main advantage. Once a game is running though, you shouldn't see much of a difference.

I thought about that. I figure do a smaller SSD now. Then in 1-2 years or whenever they become the norm I can switch over. I'll also be ready to move on to whatever the best Windows OS is at the time so I can just do a clean install.
