9/4 vs. Richmond (FCS)

Clemson hangs 70 in 1st half, crushes Richmond again
Clemson Football News

Last season, Clemson dominated FCS member Richmond 77-0. This season, Clemson almost matched that point total --- in the first half.

The 2nd-ranked Clemson Tigers began their quest for a national title in blowout fashion, dropping 70 points in the 1st half en route to a 83-7 thrashing of Richmond. Senior QB Jerry McLaughlin accounted for 6 TDs and junior RB Ray Smith accounted for 4 as Clemson scored 56 points in the 2nd quarter.

McLaughlin, who is the favorite to win a 2nd Heisman Trophy, opened his season campaign in impressive form. The senior captain threw for 4 TDs, ran for one and caught his 1st career TD pass against the lowly Spider defense. McLaughlin threw for 209 yards on a very efficient 8-of-9 passes, added 55 yards rushing and caught a 10-yard TD pass from RB Smith late in the 2nd quarter.

Smith added 182 yards and 3 TDs rushing to compliment his trick play TD pass. Junior WR Matt Ortiz and senior WR Tim Johnson each caught 2 TD passes, while freshman RB Antonio Mosley scored his 1st career TD in the 4th quarter. Junior WR Craig Terrell, who won the Best Returner Award last season, began his season with a 72-yard punt return TD in the 1st quarter.

The Tiger defense was awesome against Richmond despite giving up a TD pass in the 3rd quarter to ruin the shutout. Clemson held the Spiders to only 133 total yards, including -34 rushing, and forced 4 turnovers.

The win gave Coach Borland 150 for his career and his 60th win as the Clemson head coach.

The Tigers open ACC play next week one the road, as they travel to take on Maryland. Last season was the 1st season under Coach Borland that the Tigers didn't open conference play against the Terrapins, but they still managed a 48-22 victory.

#2 Clemson survives on road in defensive struggle
Clemson Football News

A week after scoring 83 points, Clemson somehow found a way to win with only 10.

The 2nd-ranked Clemson Tigers survived in a tough defensive battle on the road, holding off the Maryland Terrapins to win 10-6. Clemson got all their scoring in the 1st half, and their tough defense was able to preserve the victory.

It was a strange outcome for Clemson, who led the nation in scoring last season with almost 48 points-per-game and dropped 83, the most ever by a Coach Borland team, on an FCS team last week. The 10 points are the lowest winning score for Coach Borland ever. Before that, Clemson earned a 15-10 win over Virginia Tech three seasons ago.

They got a very pedestrian effort from the offense, especially top players senior QB Jerry McLaughlin and junior RB Ray Smith. McLaughlin did not look like he was in Heisman form at all, turning over the ball 4 times and only throwing one TD pass. McLaughlin threw for 290 yards and a 1st-quarter TD pass on 19-of-32 passing, but was picked off twice and lost 2 fumbles. The senior QB only added 15 yards rushing on 16 carries. Smith was stuffed by the Maryland defense, managing only 42 yards on 27 carries.

Clemson took a 7-0 lead into the 2nd quarter, but Maryland put together their only good drive midway through the frame. The Terrapins scored on a 3rd & goal TD pass, but decided to go for two and the lead. Unfortunately, they suffered a sack on the conversion try and the score remained at 7-6. Clemson was able to get a Jason Branch field goal to head into the locker room up 10-6.

In the 2nd half, Maryland shut down the Clemson offense and forced them to put several times. The Terrapins had great field position many times, including a few drives that started in Tiger territory, but Clemson was able to stuff them short each time. Maryland stuck with the run game most of the game, but were unable to covert several short 3rd downs.

The key drive for Clemson was the final drive of the game, which put the game away. The Tigers started to slowly drive down the field, working the clock in the process, but faced a crucial 4th & 8 from Maryland's 48-yard line. McLaughlin dropped back, rolled right to avoid the rush and hit sophomore WR Kyle Carrington in the flat, who earned the first down by one yard. Clemson continued to work the clock and the game ended with them on Maryland's 4-yard line.

The Clemson defense held Maryland to only 127 total yards and 6 first downs. The Terrapins managed only 67 yards rushing despite 38 carries. The Tigers recorded 3 sacks and picked off 2 passes.

Clemson will look to shake off this sluggish game next week but will remain on the road. The Tigers face a decent non-conference opponent in Missouri, who has been a contender in the Big 12 the past few years. Coach Borland has never faced Mizzou.

Backup TE to sit 4 games
Clemson Football News

News was released today that backup sophomore TE Randall Estes will be suspended for the next 4 games after a violation of team rules.

According to team sources, Estes has repeatedly skipped team meetings and has shown an utter disrespect for team rules in general. Estes, Clemson's 3rd string TE, does not have any catches through 2 seasons.

Neither Coach Borland nor Estes could be reached for comment. Clemson travels to take on a tough Missouri squad this weekend.
