10/2 vs. Wake Forest
#2 Clemson grinds out home win over Wake Forest
Clemson Football News Senior QB Jerry McLaughlin threw 3 TDs and the Clemson defense turned in another dominating performance, lifting the 2nd-ranked Tigers to a 24-6 home victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The big story of the game was the Clemson defense, which continues to defend its current #1 rank nationally. The Tigers held Wake Forest to only 93 total yards, including -43 rushing. Clemson also recorded 8 sacks and forced 2 turnovers. McLaughlin had another bittersweet passing day, as he was forced into throwing 4 interceptions for the 2nd time in 3 weeks. McLaughlin threw for 350 yards and 3 TDs on 22-of-36 passing, but his interception total is already in the double digits this season. The biggest reason why McLaughlin had trouble against the Wake Forest secondary was the lack of run support. McLaughlin was the team's leading rusher with only 35 yards. Junior RB Ray Smith managed only 29 yards on 23 carries against the Deacons' 3-3-5 defense. McLaughlin was also sacked 6 times. Junior WR Matt Ortiz caught 2 passes and led all receivers with 127 yards. Senior WR Tim Johnson added 106 yards, while sophomore WR Kyle Carrington caught a TD pass. Wake Forest's only score came in the 3rd quarter when SS Mike Smiley returned an interception 76 yards for a score. Both Smiley and CB Rodney Daniel each had 2 interceptions. Clemson stays at home to finish up their 3-game home stretch. The Tigers will welcome North Carolina, who they beat 48-14 last season. The Tigers are ranked #1 again and are looking to stay there. "We will not be leaving this spot for any reason," Clemson QB Jerry McLaughlin said in a recent interview. "This is what we've been striving for." Clemson jumped to #1 late last season after beating then-#19 Florida State on the road, their 1st win in Tallahassee under Coach Borland. The Tigers are now the clear favorite for the national title, but still faces a few tough tests, including a trip to Blacksburg to take on #4 Virginia Tech. Penn State, who was snubbed from the BCS title game last season despite a 12-0 record, occupies the #2 rank. The Nittany Lions will face #11 Ohio State in 2 weeks though, which may or may not determine how good they are. Clemson welcomes North Carolina this weekend. |

10/7 vs. North Carolina
Defense pitches shutout for #2 Clemson
Clemson Football News The Clemson defense, ranked #1 in the nation, held visiting North Carolina under 100 total yards and actually outscored their offense in a 34-0 victory. Senior QB Jerry McLaughlin threw 2 TDs and senior MLB Andrew Pettit returned an interception 59 yards for a score to help the top-ranked Tigers improve to 6-0. The Clemson defense continued their impressive streak, holding the Tar Heels to basically nothing on offense. Senior DE Matt Brown recorded 3 sacks and the Tigers held North Carolina to only 93 total yards, 4 first downs and no 3rd-down conversions. McLaughlin threw for 383 yards and 2 TDs on 25-of-32 passing to lead the Clemson offense. Senior WR Tim Johnson led all receivers with 128 yards, but it was senior TE Martin Haley and junior WR Matt Ortiz who caught TD passes. Junior RB Ray Smith paced a rough Clemson running game, which only totaled 67 yards. Smith managed 81 yards on 26 carries, but did score on a 3-yard plunge late in the 2nd quarter. Clemson led 28-0 at the half. Sophomore kicker Jason Branch nailed 2 field goals after the break. Clemson hits the road next week for their annual Textile Bowl rivalry game against N.C. State.
