12/5 ACC Championship vs. #2 Virginia Tech
#1 Clemson fends off #2 Virginia Tech to win ACC crown, BCS title shot
Clemson Football News Junior QB Jerry McLaughlin accounted for 4 TDs, in his final bid for the Heisman Trophy, to help #1 Clemson hold off #2 Virginia Tech and win their 2nd straight ACC title, 38-21. The Hokies cut the lead to only 6 twice, but the Tiger offense continued to churn out points to avoid the upset. Virginia Tech got on the board first when QB Trevor Talley found WR Paul McCauley for the 1st of their 2 TD hookups on the day. McLaughlin would answer with a 19-yard TD run to tie the game. In the 2nd quarter, Clemson extended their lead thanks to 2 field goals and a TD pass from McLaughlin to junior WR Tim Johnson, who recently returned from a major injury. The Tigers led 20-7 at the half. Clemson was still able to maintain their lead despite a wild 3rd quarter. The Hokies cut the lead to 20-14 and 27-21 with TD passes by Talley, but McLaughlin countered with a TDs passing and running each to keep Virginia Tech at bay. In the 4th quarter, the Clemson defense shut out the Hokies and freshman kicker Jason Branch nailed a field goal to account for the final score. McLaughlin threw for 329 yards and 2 TDs on 23-of-32 passing, and added a game-high 96 yards rushing and 2 scores. McLaughlin fell just short of becoming the NCAA's first 3000 yards passing/1000 yards rushing QB, finishing with only 978 yards this season. The junior QB also fell short of another milestone, which would have been 40 TDs passing/20 TDs rushing, but he finished with 39 and 19 respectively. Senior WR Kyler Kaplan led all receivers with 194 yards, while WR Johnson and senior FB Greg Parks each caught TD passes. Sophomore RB Ray Smith struggled for the 3rd straight game, finishing with only 52 yards on 24 carries. Talley, Virginia Tech's Heisman candidate QB, threw for 200 yards and 3 TDs on 14-of-23 passing in a respectable attempt to win. He didn't get much help from Doak Walker Award finalist RB Josh Doucette, who finished with 68 yards rushing. Top-ranked Clemson should also earn a bid to play for the BCS National Championship, where they will play either Big 10 champion Penn State or the winner of the SEC Championship game between unbeatens #4 Arkansas and #6 Tennessee. Top-ranked and ACC champion Clemson will take on 2nd-ranked and SEC champion Arkansas in the BCS National Championship game. And boy, the stakes nor the hype can't be any higher. "This is what we've been working toward ever since I arrived in Clemson," Coach Borland said in a recent press conference. "We slowly built this program, rose out of mediocrity, had some ups and downs but yet here we stand. On the verge of winning our 1st national championship. I couldn't be more excited." Both teams ran the table this year and were very impressive in their respective conference title games this past weekend. #1 Clemson dominated #2 Virginia Tech 38-21, while #2 Arkansas held off then-#6 and unbeaten Tennesse 28-21. The winner of this game will earn the 1st national title for that school. "They are very similar to us in production, so I'm expecting a real dogfight," Coach Borland said. "They have an awesome offense with plenty of playmakers, and a ferocious defense with tons of stars. Sounds kinda familiar, huh?" Both teams enter the game ranked very high nationally on both offense and defense. Clemson brings the nation's #1 offense and the 6th-ranked defense, while the Razorbacks present the 2nd-ranked offense and the #4 defense. Both teams love to run the ball, ranked #1 (Arkansas) and #2 (Clemson) in the nation, but the Tigers have an advantage on defense with the 2nd-ranked rush defense. Either way it could be a shootout, a defensive struggle or something in-between. Arkansas is led on offense by their Heisman candidate RB James Woods. Woods ran for nearly 2000 yards and scored 24 total TDs. QB Dustin Evans will run the offense and should be a player to watch, after throwing for over 2300 yards and 34 TDs this season. No matter the style of play, it should be a tight ball game and a very exciting event. As for the rest of the bowl matchups, there is a very interesting schedule on tap. Both of Coach Borland's former teams, BYU and FIU, captured their respective conference titles and will play in good bowl games this year. #21 FIU went 11-1, winning the Sun Belt title for the 1st time in 3 years, and will play a tough #25 Northern Illinois squad in the Motor City Bowl. #4 BYU ran the table again, going 12-0 and winning the MWC title, and will play #6 Wisconsin in the Sugar Bowl. BYU lost to the Badgers at the same venue a few years ago. #3 Penn State was snubbed from the BCS title game despite going 12-0 this year. The Nittany Lions will play Pac-10 champion #13 UCLA in the Rose Bowl. Big 12 champion #7 Texas will play #8 Auburn in the Fiesta Bowl, while ACC runner-up #5 Virginia Tech will face Big East champion #12 West Virginia in the Orange Bowl. National Award Winners/All-Americans
McLaughlin wins Heisman Trophy in landslide to highlight award-happy Clemson
Clemson Football News Junior QB Jerry McLaughlin won the Heisman Trophy in the same fashion Clemson beat their opponents this season --- by a blowout. Clemson's junior QB captured the coveted Heisman Trophy after an incredible season, leading the Tigers to the #1 rank, the ACC title and a spot in the BCS National title game. McLaughlin garnered 566 first-place votes and 2063 points, winning by a margin of 1,400. McLaughlin threw for 3315 yards and 39 TDs while adding 978 yards rushing and 19 scores, almost becoming the NCAA's first QB to produce a 3000 passing/1000 rushing yards season. The entire Heisman voting is below. HEISMAN TROPHY RESULTS *Jerry McLaughlin, QB, Clemson* --- 2063 points (566 1st-place votes) John Pino, QB, Arizona --- 663 pts (50) Jeremy Meeks, QB, Oklahoma State --- 657 pts (55) James Woods, RB, Arkansas --- 542 pts (42) Trevor Talley, QB, Virginia Tech --- 431 pts (42) The Heisman Trophy wasn't the only award McLaughlin brought home, and McLaughlin isn't the only award winner for Clemson. The junior QB also captured the Maxwell Award for the nation's top offensive player and the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top QB. Also winning an award for #1 Clemson is junior DE Matt Brown and sophomore WR/KR Craig Terrell. Brown captured the Lombardi Award, awarded to the nation's top defensive lineman, for the 2nd straight year but upped his already decorated career by taking home the Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player. Brown led the nation in sacks with 25 and also recorded 38 tackles for a loss and 2 forced fumbles. Terrell took over the main returning duties when junior WR Tim Johnson went down with a broken jaw and became the nation's top returner with the Best Returner Award. Terrell averaged 27.6 yards-per-kickoff and 13.7 yards-per-punt, scoring 2 return TDs in the process. Terrell was also one of Clemson's leading receivers with 623 yards and 7 TDs. Several other Clemson players were nominated for awards but didn't win. Junior OLB Ken Clark was a semifinalist for both the Bednarik and Best LB Awards, while junior DE Joey Flowers (Lombardi) and sophomore CB Cornelius Thomas (Thorpe) finished as finalists in their respective position awards. Senior WR Kyler Kaplan (Best WR) and junior TE Martin Haley (Best TE) were semifinalists in their categories, while freshman kicker Jason Branch finished as a Groza Award finalist. The rest of the nation's award winners are as follows. Award winners McLaughlin, Brown and Terrell found themselves spots on the 1st Team after their incredible seasons. Joining them on the 1st Team is junior DE Joey Flowers, senior DT John Wilkinson, junior OLB Ken Clark, sophomore CBs Joe Larkins and Cornelius Thomas and freshman kicker Jason Branch. Flowers teamed up with Brown to form the dangerous DE combo in the nation. Flowers finished 2nd in the nation to Brown with 20 sacks, and also tallied 31 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Wilkinson provided the interior force to complement Clemson's speedy outside rushers, helping the Tigers produce the nation's 2nd-ranked rush defense. Wilkinson recorded 12 tackles for loss, 9 sacks and recovered 2 fumbles. Clark finished as the team's leading tackler and was the defense's leading scorer. Clark recorded 64 stops, including 24 for a loss and 12 sacks, but was also a major ball hawk with 4 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and 2 defensive TDs. Clark also continued to be a special teams force with 5 blocked kicks. Larkins, Clemson's nickelback, and Thomas, their #1 corner, played very well in the Tiger secondary. Thomas tied for 2nd on the team with 55 tackles, but led the team with 10 passes defensed and also picked off 5 passes. Larkins tied for 2nd in the nation with 7 interceptions, returning one for a TD, and also blocked a kick. Branch filled the big void left by a graduated All-American very well and became an All-American himself. The freshman nailed 11-of-12 field goals and all 83 extra points attempts, accounting for 116 points in Clemson's high-scoring offense. Branch was also named to the Freshman All-American team. All-ACC
Clemson, Virginia Tech dominate All-ACC squads
Clemson Football News #1 Clemson continued to bring in tons of awards, this time leading the ACC in all-conference nominations with 20. ACC runner-up Virginia Tech was close behind with 18, but no other team had more than 3. Headlining the All-ACC nods for Clemson are their sixteen 1st Team players. All-Americans junior QB Jerry McLaughlin, junior DEs Matt Brown and Joey Flowers, senior DT John Wilkinson, junior OLB Ken Clark, sophomore CBs Joe Larkins and Cornelius Thomas, freshman kicker Jason Branch and sophomore WR/KR Craig Terrell all found 1st Team spots for the Tigers. Joining Clemson's All-Americans on the All-ACC 1st Team squad is sophomore RB Ray Smith, senior WR Kyler Kaplan, senior center Robert Rhoden, junior guard Michael Davis, senior tackle Chris O'Neal, junior DT Ryan Cody and senior SS Brandon Brock. Smith was Clemson's top player a year ago while McLaughlin was injured and seemed to hit the sophomore slump this season, but he still produced a very impressive year out of the backfield. Smith ran for 1629 yards and 13 TDs, while adding 172 receiving yards and a score. Kaplan led the nation in receiving yards with 1351 yards and finished 2nd on the team with 8 TD catches. Rhoden, Davis and O'Neal were very instrumental parts of a tough offensive line that allowed McLaughlin & co. to produce the nation's #1 offense. Cody allowed Clemson to sweep the 1st Team defensive line spots. Cody recorded 4 sacks and 8 tackles for loss to earn his spot. Brock, the Tigers' defensive captain, returns to the 1st Team after picking off 6 passes, forcing a fumble and scoring a defensive TD. Earning All-ACC 2nd Team nominations are junior TE Martin Haley, junior guard Chuck Fenton, senior tackle Trevor Johnson and junior MLB Andrew Pettit. Haley finished as a Best TE semifinalist and was a 2nd Team selection after catching 8 TD passes, tied with Kaplan for 2nd on the team. Fenton and Johnson combined with Clemson's 1st Team lineman to form the best offensive line in the ACC. Pettit, despite missing a few games due to injury, was still one of the best linebackers in the ACC. The junior tallied 52 stops, including 6 sacks, picked off a pass and forced 2 fumbles. The entire All-ACC squad is as follows.
