May 1877 Recap News / Trades - Tom Shaw of Boston went 5-for-5 on May 5 (5/5!) to help the Beans' effort in a 20-17 loss to Chicago. Shaw had a double and 4 RBIs. He's hitting .308 with a home run and 17 RBI. - Chicago RF Todd Goger had 5 hits of his own in the same game, going 5-for-6 with an RBI. He is hitting .400 with 20 RBI this season. - Pete Wright led the Athletes to a 5-hit shutout of the Whales on May 6. He's 9-6 with a 3.69 ERA so far in 1877. - Sam Bennet powered St. Louis to a 4-0 win over Cincinnati on May 10, allowing just 5 hits. He's 4-5 in 18 starts (21 appearances) with a 3.54 ERA this season. - Jim 'King Kong' Kalski helped Chicago beat Louisville 15-11 with 5 hits on May 11. He's hitting .347 with 14 RBI this season. - John Zipperian, Chicago's catcher, went 5-for-5 to help the Athletes beat St. Louis 13-7 on May 12. He's hitting .387 with 18 RBI this season. - 31 year old Hartford 3B Alex Kiley went 5-for-5 with an RBI in a 10-8 Whales victory over St. Louis on May 14. In his second season in Hartford Kiley is hitting .346 with 16 RBI. - In a wild game that featured 46 hits over 10 innings, Whales SS Andy Abbott went 5-for-7 with an RBI to help Hartford in a 14-13 loss to Chicago on May 18. The 32 year old is hitting .278 with 17 RBI this season. - George Hall's 27 game hit streak ended in a Boston win over St. Louis on May 19. The 28 year old CF went 0-for-5 to end the streak. He's hitting .329 with 26 RBI this season. - Bill Neal had his 20 game hit streak end in a 8-1 loss to Hartford on May 22. He's hitting .381 with 12 RBI this season. Neal, 33, has played for Boston since 1871. - Steve Saladino tore his PCL on May 23 and will miss the rest of the season. He hit .294 with 14 RBI and 21 runs scored in his first season for St. Louis after playing with Troy and New York (N). - Pete Wright dominated the Brewers in a 4-hit shutout on May 24. The 1875 MVP is 9-6 with a 3.69 ERA this season in 34 starts. - Cincinnati traded P Dick McBride to Boston for 2B Bill Fouser and SS Molly Moore. Cincinnati had not used the 29 year old pitcher at all this season. Moore was named the #42 prospect in the NL before this season. - St. Louis traded 32 year old RF Sam Beyers to Cincinnati for P Dan Fitch and 3B Bill Boyd. Beyers was hitting .400 for St. Louis in limited action (50 AB) after suffering a strained oblique in early May. The 32 year old played 6 seasons with Brooklyn (R), winning 2 Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger before joining St. Louis in the off-season. Fitch was 0-1 with a save, a 3.43 ERA, and 5 Ks in 13 appearances. Boyd was traded by Boston to Cincinnati last off-season. The 24 year old was hitting .244 with 4 doubles, a triple, and 11 RBI this season. - St. Louis traded LF Tom York to Cincinnati for P Tricky Nichols and CF Jack Gleason. York, 26, is hitting .310 this season in limited action for St. Louis. Gleason was named the #12 prospect in the NL this past off-season. - 'Long' Levi Meyerle is taking a 27 game hit streak into June, while Highball Ellis carries a 21 game hit streak of his own into next month. - Hartford went 8-2 in the last 10 games of the month to streak into second place, just 1.5 games back from Chicago. June 1877 Recap News / Trades - Hugh Campbell of St. Louis shut out Cincinnati on June 2, giving up 2 hits and striking out 1 in a 3-0 win. - 'Long' Levi Meyerle's hit streak ended on June 2 at 28 games. He's hitting .324 with 23 RBIs this season. - Cincinnati traded C Dick Higham and 2B Bill Fouser to Louisville for LF Joe Grey on June 3. - Highball Ellis had a 25 game hit streak ended on June 5 by St. Louis. He's hitting .310 with 2 HR and 37 RBI this season. - On June 7, Cincinnati traded 1B Orin McGuire to Louisville for RF Herm Doscher, SS T E Newell, 2B Adam Rocap, 2B Jacob Doyle and SS John Dailey. McGuire, 31, was hitting .302 with 8 RBIs at the time of the trade. - Chicago traded 2B Jimmy Wood to Boston for P Dallas Rubel and LF John Hayes on June 8. Rubel, 37, is 6-4 with a 2.61 ERA in 86.1 IP with 18 Ks. 1877 Regular Season Recap News / Trades - On July 3 rumors spread that Boston RF Harry Hawkins has asked for a trade. He is allegedly unhappy with fans and team management, and the pressure and demands of playing in Boston are too great. Hawkins, 33, has been a part of the Brooklyn Blue Stockings, Baltimore Baybirds, Philadelphia Quakers, New York Nationals, and Boston Beans organization. - Hartford clinched their spot in the postseason on July 4. "I couldn't be prouder of this team," said the Whales manager. "These guys worked their tails off all season long, so they've definitely earned this. We've still got a long way to go to reach our ultimate goal and that's a championship trophy. So we're gonna celebrate and just let this all sink in tonight, but it's back to work tomorrow." Three National League Teams Move in Offseason - Hartford to Providence, Louisville to Indianapolis, St. Louis to Milwaukee During the NL Winter Meetings, three team owners announced plans to move their clubs to other cities in search of greater financial success. Hartford will move to Providence and change their nickname from the Whales to the Princes. Louisville will move to Indianapolis and change their name to the Champions. St. Louis will move to Milwaukee and remain the Brewers. |
