They were certainly among the favorites to win in Brazil, but so were Brazil. What happened in that match is Brazil flat-out quit like 15 minutes into the match. I've never seen anything like it on that stage, and nothing like it will ever been seen again.

It also has to be pointed out that Neymar was straight up assaulted by a Chilean player earlier in the tournament and had a broken back so couldn't play in the 7-1. I don't know if you recall the coverage around that time, but everyone acted like Neymar had passed away lmao

Final edit - Also, Brazil's captain this time around, Thiago, picked up a yellow card in the quarterfinals for one of the dumbest things. He tried to block the keeper by coming from behind when he was about to kick the ball dropping it from his hands. A textbook stupid yellow card that meant he was suspended for the semifinal for yellow accumulation. His replacement, Dante, sucked, and their defensive pairing of him and David Luiz was comically absent on most of Germany's goals.
That game is still one of the most astonishing experiences in my 20+ years watching sports.

Right. You look at the world cup historically, and there are basically four great powers. Germany, Italy, Brazil and Argentina. Heck, 2010 was the first final to not feature any of those teams.

Italy, despite winning Euros, has found a way to not qualify for the past two world cups, which is entirely bizarre. Germany has been poopty since winning the Confederation Cup in 2017 and they're still struggling to transition between generations.

His brother was on IG saying that’s not the case and neither is the “Natural Causes” label they’re throwing out.
