There was a collective pants ****ting that occurred once City bid—at that point nobody was truly confident (I read and heard from several prominent Arsenal supporters who changed their tune from a few weeks ago once that bid was made).

For the record, Ornstein has confirmed that City's interest in Rice was very much real and not a ploy to drive up the price for Arsenal.
