AVALANCHE hold off SHARKS 3-2 to climb back into Playoff Race..

RECAP 3/29/20

San Jose, CA- Phillip Grubauer had 28 Saves to help the Colorado Avalanche(41-29-8) climb back into the Western Conference Playoff Race with just 4 games left to play with their 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks(44-25-9) on Sunday Night inside the SAP Center.

The Avalanche now hold the final Wildcard spot in the Western Conference with a 1 point lead over 9th place Edmonton.

"We're getting down to the nitty gritty and the final few Games so every game is a must win. That's our mentality." Avalanche Head Coach Jared Bednar stated.

San Jose(44-25-9) went up 1-0 in the Second Period when Evander Kane(36) scored.

But after an Interference Call on William Karlsson gave the Av's a Power Play where Captain Gabriel Landeskog took center stage scoring on the Power Play. His 26th of the year to tie it up.

From then on the Sharks struggled to slow down the Avalanche's onslaught. With a 5 on 3 advantage due to Joakim Ryan's interference and a Brent Burns high stick, the Avalanche pulled away for good with an Alexander Kerfoot's Power Play Goal.

His 18th of the year.

In the Third Period Colorado(41-29-8) scored again off Sven Andrighetto's 21st Goal of the campaign. Being down 3-1 with just 21 seconds left in the game, Brent Burns(12) scored for San Jose(44-25-9) to make it 3-2.

But it was too little too late.

"Tough loss for us but those penalties killed us I think. Giving up Power Play Goals and being down on the Man advantage kinda did us in. Colorado played tough and hard tonight. We need to bounce back against Edmonton now. We have a few left to play and need to finish strong." Sharks Head Coach Pete DeBoer stated.

Sharks Netminder Martin Jones made 38 saves despite allowing 3 Goals.

On Tuesday Night the Sharks(44-25-9) will host the Edmonton Oilers(43-30-5) who exactly one week ago blew out San Jose 7-3 in Canada.

SHARKS clinch Playoff Berth with 6-0 Shutout over OILERS!

RECAP 3/31/20

San Jose, CA- Martin Jones had 35 Saves for his 5th Shutout of the year as the San Jose Sharks(45-25-9) clinch a Playoff Berth with their 6-0 shutout over the Edmonton Oilers(43-31-5) on Tuesday Night inside the SAP Center.

The Sharks will now look to defend their Stanley Cup in the Playoffs and win back to back Cups.

"That's easier said than done." Sharks Head Coach Peter DeBoer stated. "We're in but we still have some work to do and a couple of games left to play."

San Jose(45-25-9) trail Anaheim by 2 Points for the Pacific Division Title and could leapfrog their Division rivals if they keep winning.

Edmonton(43-31-5) is dealt a blow in their Playoff hopes as they sit in 9th Place in the Western Conference 1 Point behind the Colorado Avalanche for the final Wildcard.

"Tough loss. We just kind of fell on our face and it was embarrassing." Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan stated.

7 Days after a 7-3 blowout win over the Stanley Cup Champions, the Oilers fell flat and got shutout.

William Karlsson(28) scored first to put San Jose on the board 1-0. Erik Karlsson(11), and Curtis Sawyer(24) all followed suit and the Sharks jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the Second Period.

"That fast start was the trick for us. We needed to respond and jump out quickly and we did that tonight." DeBoer added.

Midway through the Second Period, Tomas Hertl(20) made it 4-0 and the Oilers continued to struggle.

Netminder Anthony Stolarz was pulled after allowing 4 Goals on 15 Shots. Mikko Koskinen came in but the Fins wouldn't stop their offensive onslaught.

Barclay Goodrow(11) scored to make it 5-0 inside the SAP Center to stick it to their former Head Coach Todd McLellan.

A Kevin LaBanc(16) Goal made it 6-0. Joe Pavelski, Joakim Ryan, and Erik Karlsson each had 2 Assists.

Koskinen finished with 23 saves as San Jose(45-25-9) are heading to the Playoffs. Tomorrow the Sharks will be in Canada to face the Calgary Flames(30-37-12) who have been eliminated from the Playoffs and sit in 13th Place in the Western Conference.
