Lightning End 5 Game Skid; Defeat Edmonton 4-1

Tampa - In front of 8,930 fans inside the Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds, the Tampa Bay Lightning ended their 5 game losing streak by defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-1.

Center Brian Bradley led the way, scoring two goals (one on the power play), and adding an assist on the last goal of the game, scored by Danton Cole.

"We as a team played a complete game. Any individual stats, really belongs to the team as a whole." said Bradley, after his 3 point performance.

The Lightning got off to a 1-0 lead, after Igor Larionov connected on a pass between his legs, to Rob Zamuner, who beat Oilers Goalie Bill Ranford.

"I don't know how Iggy did it, but I am glad he did." joked Zamuner, who was on the receiving end of Larionov's highlight real pass.

Brian Bradley would scored consecutive goals, to put the team up 3-0 in the third. The only breakdown in play happened after Ken Hodge made a sloppy pass attempt, that was intercepted by Bernie Nicholls, who scored on a break away goal.

Lightning Goalie Wendell Young played a stellar game, stopping 24 shots.

"He gave us confidence, and allowed us to play a better game in front of him." said rookie Defensemen Roman Hamrlik.

The team bounced right back after Nicholls goal, when Danton Cole blasted a one timer past Ranford's glove.

The Lightning will take tonight off, before they head back to the Expo Hall to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team will look to avenge their 5-1 loss to the Maple Leafs from earlier this year.

Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

Tampa Falls To Toronto 5-4 In A Hard Fought Game

Tampa - The Lightning fought hard, never stopped playing, but still lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of 9,745 fans inside Expo Hall. After the game, a 5-4 loss, Head Coach Terry Crisp said he was proud of the way his team played.

"You know, coming into this season, being an expansion team, we could very well be a team that has a defeatist attitude. We didn't show that tonight. We did some good things. We did some real dumb things. But, we never gave up."

After going down 2-0 early in the first, thanks to goals by Dave McLwain and Wendel Clark, the Lightning came back to life, thanks in part to Adam Creighton, who dropped the gloves with Todd Gill and held his own against the much bigger Toronto defender.

"Seeing Cray drop the gloves like that, and come away with the edge, it really jump started us." said Brian Bradley.

After the scrum, the Bolts got goals by Igor Larionov and Bryan Trottier to tie the game after the first period.

Rob Cimetta scored a goal a minute into the second period when he took the puck and blasted the puck past Wendell Young.

"That was heartbreaking, for sure. But Crispy calmed us down, and told us to keep on grinding." said captain Bryan Trottier.

Later in the second period, thanks to hard forechecking by Stu Grimson, who managed to muscle the puck away from Rob Pearson, which would lead to a goal by Brian Bradley, tying the game 3-3.

"Keep grinding. That's what we keep preaching." said Assistant Coach Wayne Cashman.

However, the Maple Leafs would go into the third period with a one goal lead, thanks to a powerplay goal by Nikolai Borschevsky that ended the second period.

Coming out into the third period, the Lightning were buzzing around Grant Fuhr, and managed to get one past him, after Mikael Andersson deflected the puck past the Maple Leaf goalie.

As the third period waned on, it did look like the Lightning were tiring.

They were playing with a short bench, after Rob Zamuner exited halfway through the first period, after being driven into the boards. He will be getting checked out by team doctors ahead of their next game against the Quebec Nordiques.

With a depleted bench, the Lightning ended up getting outworked down the stretch. Dave McLlwain, who ended the game with a goal and assist, intercepted a pass by Adam Creighton and the ensuing rush led to the go ahead goal by Joe Sacco.

Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

Zamuner Heads To IR; Team Calls Up Callander

Tampa - Bad news for the Tampa Bay Lightning, as it was announced that LW Rob Zamuner stained his oblique muscle after he was driven into the boards last night by Toronto Maple D Rudy Poeschek.

Zamuner will miss the next 2-3 weeks while he recovers, and was placed on the teams injured reserve list.

GM Phil Esposito announced that the team has recalled RW Jock Callander to take Zamuner's place on the roster. Callander, who scored 2 goals and 2 assists in 7 games with the Atlanta Knights of the IHL, is expected to be in the lineup with the team returns to the ice tomorrow night against the Quebec Nordiques.

Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

Sakic Scores 4; Quebec Obliterates Tampa 7-1

Tampa - The Lightning were thoroughly embarrassed last night, in front of 9,934 fans at the Expo Hall, losing the game 7-1 to the Quebec Nordiques.

Nordiques star center Joe Sakic skated circles around a clearly overmatched Lightning team, scoring 4 goals. Sakic and Mike Ricci scored nearly a minute apart in the first period, making the score 2-0.

The first period also saw an injury to Defenseman Doug Crossman, who suffered a lower leg injury after being on the receiving end of a check from Herb Raglan.

Head Coach Terry Crisp said that Crossman is day-to-day, and might not make the brief trip too Canada that awaits the Lightning.

The lone bright spot for the Lightning came before the first period came to a close, when on the power play, Ken Hodge snuck the puck over Nordiques goalie Ron Hextall.

The Lightning did manage to play some good tough hockey in the second, but Sakic managed to score the lone goal of the period, when he scored on a breakaway while the Nordiques were on the powerplay.

Then in the third period, the flood gates opened, as Quebec scored 4 goals in the period as the Lightning players looked noticeably dejected on the bench.

"It's my job to keep the boys focused and determined to fight back. Tonight, we didn't have any fight back, and that is something that we will work to fix." Head Coach Terry Crisp said.

"Thoroughly embarrassed." a dejected Rob Ramage said.

The team will get a chance to get some revenge, as they will travel to Quebec to play the back end of a home and home against the Nordiques.

Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

Sakic's 4 Point Performance Dooms Lightning

Quebec - Different venue. Different night. Same result. Joe Sakic's dominance against Tampa doomed the Lightning for another night. Sakic lead all skaters with 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists).

"The guy is unreal. He is going to be something special." said Tampa Associate Coach Wayne Cashman. "We game planned for him, but he still managed to go off."

Leading 3-0 after two periods, it looked like a repeat from their last game, except this time, the Lightning showed some heart in the final period.

After a scrum between Rob Ramage and Adam Foote, that saw both men get 15 penalty minutes apiece, the Lightning began to play with a sense of urgency. Danton Cole scored his 3rd goal of the season after a nifty between the legs pass from Mikael Andersson.

However, the Nordiques kept the pressure on, going off for 18 shots in the last 10 minutes of the game, totaling 41 for the night.

Andrei Kovalenko and Sakic both scored in the last period, making the game 5-1.

Showing the heart that was missing in their last contest, the Lightning fired back on the powerplay when Adam Creighton beat Ron Hextall, making the final tally 5-2.

"We have to keep battling. Can't get down on our record (2-8-0) this early. The season is long, and we will start to see some success." said Tampa LW Mike Hartman.

"Yes, we are an expansion team, but we have talent in this room." said Mikael Andersson, who led all forwards with 20:42 of playing time.

The Lightning will have today off, before they play the storied Montral Canadiens.
