Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

Bolts Take Down Senators In OT; Win 3-2

Ottawa - Thanks to a Rob Zamuner goal in overtime, the Tampa Bay Lightning have won their first ever exhibition win in franchise history.

In front of 7,303 fans at the Ottawa Civic Center, the Lightning found themselves down 2-0 halfway through the second period. Head Coach Terry Crisp called a timeout after Brian Bradley got called for tripping, and told his team to settle down.

"I could tell we weren't playing our game, and I just wanted to calm the boys down and tell them to keep on playing and keep on chipping away, and we would get there."

After successfully killing off the Bradley penalty, Mike Hartman rushed to the other end of the ice, beating Gord Dineen to the puck, and negating an icing call. Hartman circled behind the Senators goal, and found Tim Bergland rushing down the left side of the ice and connected with a pass that Bergland banged passed Goalie Peter Sidorkiewicz, making the game 2-1.

In the third, Bergland would score again, this time on the power play, tying the game.

"I just saw the puck a little clearer tonight, and got some great passes come my way that I was able to put into the net." Bergland said after the game.

With the game heading into overtime, captain Bryan Trottier (who was a healthy scratch) spoke to the team during the break in action.

"I just told them that these are the games that will make us stronger, and bring us together." Trottier said.

A few minutes into overtime, Adam Creighton (who had 2 assists), connected with Rob Zamuner on a nice cross ice pass. Zamuner deked passed a defender and put the goal into the net, winning the game.

"This was a great win for us, and something that we will look to build on." Zamuner said.

The team will look to do exactly that tomorrow night, when they travel to Minnesota to take on the North Stars.

Lightning Continue To Trim Roster; Reassign 3

Tampa - The Tampa Bay Lightning continued to work on getting down to 23 players by reassigning 3 players to the Atlanta Knights of the IHL. The team now has 28 players on their roster and will have to trim their roster by 5 more before the start of the season.

With 3 Goalies on the roster, the team will look to find a backup to Wendell Young. That competition is down to Pat Jablonski and JC Bergeron. Jablonski will be getting the start in goal tomorrow in Minnesota.

Players reassigned to Atlanta are:
  • D - Chris Lipuma - Atlanta Knights
  • D - Alain Cote - Atlanta Knights
  • C - Michel Mongeau - Atlanta Knights

Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

Tampa Bay Embarrassed In Minnesota; Lose 6-2

Minnesota - Tampa Bay's latest loss, a 6-2 preseason game, had Head Coach Terry Crisp fuming.

"It was a completely different team out there tonight. We were unmotivated, and outside of a few guys, played without passion." Crisp said.

Pat Jablonski, making his Tampa Bay exhibition debut, let in 6 goals and was replaced by Wendell Young halfway through the third period.

"We didn't support Patty tonight, but he didn't come to play either." General Manager Phil Esposito said.

"We will get this team right. One way or another." he said.

After going down 3-0 within the first 10 minutes of play, the team tried to fight back. Mike Hartman fought Brad Berry, trying to get some momentum going Tampa's way. It seemed to work. The Lightning ended the first period down only one, thanks to goals by Defensemen Roman Hamrlik and Doug Crossman.

However, The North Stars took the game back over thanks to a powerplay goal by Dave Gagner. After Gagner's goal, the team's effort disappeared.

Mike Hartman and Marc Bergevin tried to inject some passion back into the game, fighting Dave Gagner and Dan Quinn respectively, but the team seemed to give up.

Russ Courtnall would score later in the secon period, and in the third period Mike Modano would add the sixth goal on the powerplay.

"Listen, we have two more games before we go live. We are going to have guys on the team who show passion and show effort. Not only on game nights, but during the off days as well." Esposito said.

The team will travel back to Ottawa, and take on the Senators in two days.

Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

After Rough Outing Goalie Pat Jablonski Sent Down; Team Gets Down To 23

Tampa - The initial 1992/93 Tampa Bay Lightning roster has been set, after reassigning 5 players to the Atlanta Knights.

Most notably, Goalie Pat Jablonski was sent down, meaning that JC Bergeron has won the backup Goalie spot, behind starter Wendell Young.

"J.C. hasn't played in the preseason, but we liked what we saw of him in practice. After the last game, we felt Patty would best be served by going down to Atlanta and see how he responds." GM Phil Esposito said.

With the team down to the required 23 players, the Opening Night roster will be intact as it ends the preseason over the next two games. Tomorrow night, the team will be in Ottawa to take on the Senators.

Two days later, the team will end the preseason at home against the Capitals.

The final 5 sent down are:
  • G - Pat Jablonski - Atlanta Knights
  • D - Peter Taglianetti - Atlanta Knights
  • C - Brent Gretzky - Atlanta Knights
  • C - Marc Bureau - Atlanta Knights
  • RW - Steve Tuttle - Atlanta Knights

Tampa Rebounds With 3-1 Win In Ottawa

Ottawa - After a demoralizing loss in Minnesota, the Tampa Bay Lightning responded with their most complete game of the preseason, defeating the Ottawa Senators 3-1.

The team jumped out to an early lead thanks to a first period goal by Mikael Andersson, when Andersson broke free mid-ice and scored on a nifty breakaway.

Defenseman Rob Ramage kept the momentum going with a knockout of Jeff Lazaro as the first period came to a close. Lazaro took a run at Goalie JC Bergeron, and Ramage responded by dropping his gloves and making quick work of the Senator.

Bergeron, after winning the backup Goalie spot, made his first start of the preseason and was solid throughout the game. A late goal by Chris Luongo kept Bergeron from getting the shutout.

"JC played a great game. He gives us cofidence that there won't be a drop off when Wendell needs a night off." Head Coach Terry Crisp said.

The team scored two goals in the second period, off goals by Rob Ramage and Ken Hodge, giving the team a 3-0 lead going into the thrid.

"After our last game, we had a sit down meeting in the locker room, to basically discuss how we have a chance to make history here in Tampa, and how we have to take this seriously." said Captain Bryan Trottier, who playeda little over 14 minutes, his most thus far in Tampa.

The team will wrap up the preseason in two nights, when the team returns to Tampa to take on the Washington Capitals.

Re: From Expansion - A Story Of The Lightning (FHM7)

Lightning Ends Preseason With 2-2 Tie

Tampa - The expansion Tampa Bay Lightning ended their first preseason with a 2-2 tie with the Washington Capitals.

The team has had continued success on the powerplay, as Robert Svehla blasted a pass from Shawn Chambers at the point, past Olaf Kolzig.

"Svehla has had a great training camp. His upside offensively is why we wanted to bring him in." said GM Phil Esposito. Indeed, while only in his rookie season, Svehla has led all Lightning players with an average of 24:07 of ice time.

The game got chippy after Svehla's goal when Roman Hamrlik got a double-minor roughing penalty when he injured Tim Taylor. With Taylor grimacing on the ice, Kevin Hatcher and Tim Bergland dropped their gloves in a fight.

The early word on Taylor is that he fractured a few ribs, and will be out for the first month of the season.

The chippiness continued as the game featured fights between Rob Ramage and Jason Woolley. Ramage would also take on Steve Konowalchuk late in the game.

Now that the preseason is over, and the team readies itself for an opening night game against the Chicago Blackhawks, General Manager Phil Esposito and the scouting staff has to prepare for the Waiver Draft.

Every team will produce a list of players who will be available for other teams to snatch up.

The Lightning will announce their unprotected list tomorrow in advance of the Waiver Draft.
