Re: Hockey Night in Toronto | The Toronto Maple Leafs
Leafs Score Early And Often Against Oilers
First Period Pushes Leafs to Victory
The Toronto Maple Leafs jumped right back into their winning ways after getting blown out at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
Jake Gardiner scored his second goal of the season to open the scoring in the first period just over five minutes into the game on a point shot past a screened Viktor Fasth.
Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf and Daniel Winnik all scored in less than a three minute span with five minutes remaining in the opening period, spelling the night for Viktor Fasth, who was pulled from the game in favour of former Leafs goaltender Ben Scrivens after making just 12 saves on 16 shots.
Scrivens faired much better than his teammate, stopping 29 of 32 shots as the Oilers attempted to climb back into the game. Jordan Eberle got a quick goal less than 30 seconds into the start of the second period.
The glimpse of hope was quickly extinguished as Nazem Kadri answered on the other end with his second goal of the season just over one minute later. Phil Kessel would score his second of the game less than thirty seconds after, in what seemed like Scriven's only struggle during the game.
Offseason signee Benoit Pouliot would add another for the Oilers before the period ended to shorten the Leafs lead to 6-2.
After giving up a goal to James Van Riemsdyk just ten seconds into the final period, the Oilers opened up their offensive game with goals from Keith Aulie and Mark Hendricks before Marc Arcobello scored with nine seconds left in the period.
"Our offensive game was too little, too late," said former Maple Leafs AHL affiliate head coach and current Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins.
The Maple Leafs continue their western Canadian road trip against the Calgary Flames tomorrow evening.

Leafs Shutout Flames
Bernier Perfect in Goal
After taking down the Edmonton Oilers to start off their western Canadian road trip, the Toronto Maple Leafs handed the same fate to their Alberta counterparts.
James Van Riemsdyk scored his twelfth and thirteenth goals of the season as the Toronto Maple Leafs shutout the Calgary Flames 5-0.
Jonathan Bernier was perfect the whole night, stopping all 26 shots he faced including eight shots on three powerplay opportunities for the Flames, who dropped their record to 8-2-2.
Mike Santorelli and rookie William Nylander also scored for the Leafs in the second period, who chased Flames starter Jonas Hiller from the game. Hiller was replaced by Karri Ramo who stopped 15 of 16 shots with the exception of a blast from the point by Dion Phaneuf, who scored his second goal in the last two games.

Re: Hockey Night in Toronto | The Toronto Maple Leafs
Leafs Comeback Falls Short Against Canucks
Higgins Nets Hat Trick
After winning the first two games of their western Canadian road trip, the Toronto Maple Leafs looked out of gas to start their third and final game against the Vancouver Canucks, with starting goalie James Reimer surrendering three goals on four shots before being pulled in favour of Jonathan Bernier.
Chris Higgins scored three times for the Canucks, who also got goals from Jannik Hansen, Bo Horvat, Tom Sestito and Daniel Sedin.
The Maple Leafs, who trailed 4-1 after the first period, had their comeback fall short, losing 7-6 to Eddie Lack and the Canucks.
Mike Santorelli, Morgan Rielly, Joffrey Lupul, Phil Kessel, Tyler Bozak and captain Dion Phaneuf scored for the Leafs, who needed some better goaltending to pick up the win.
"If we could have been more solid in net, I think this game would've been ours," said Randy Carlyle, although he did acknowledge the fact that the squad was "dead tired" after scratching out wins in Edmonton and Calgary.
The Leafs return home to Toronto to take on the New Jersey Devils in their next game.

Breakdown: The Leafs have got off to a fantastic start to the season, going 10-4-0 in the first month. Phil Kessel and James Van Riemsdyk have been pacing the offence for the Leafs with 19 and 13 goals a piece. Jonathan Bernier has been solid in net, showing that he can handle the pressures of being an NHL starting goalie in a pressure-packed market as Toronto, posting a .882 save percentage while managing to pick up 9 wins. Rookie William Nylander has faired well in his first month in the NHL, proving the Leafs' decision to keep him with the big club was the right one, with three goals and three assists, good enough for a +2 rating.

Leafs Get Back On Track Against Devils
Bernier Solid in Net As Leafs Return to Winning Ways
Toronto -- After losing a close matchup on the west side of Canada, the Toronto Maple Leafs returned home to the Air Canada Centre for the first time in a week and a half, and they seem to have brought their winning ways back with them, beating the New Jersey Devils 6-1.
Phil Kessel opened the scoring in the first period when he took advantage of a New Jersey turnover in the high slot area, promptly sniping his shot past Devils starter Scott Clemmensen.
After being kept quiet for the rest of the first period, the Maple Leafs' relentless offence broke open in the second, scoring three times while chasing Clemmensen from the game.
Defenseman Cody Franson scored the first goal of the second period early in on a beautiful cross ice saucer pass from rookie William Nylander, leaving Franson with time to wind up and blow a hard slap shot right past a screened Clemmensen. David Booth would score less than eight minutes later on another nice pass, this time a cross crease pass from the corner from Mike Santorelli to pad the Leafs lead.
Jake Gardiner capped off the second period scoring after coming out of the penalty box and picking up a Joffrey Lupul blocked shot, leading to a breakaway. A quick fake shot and cut to the right left Gardiner with a wide open net that he buried the puck into, giving the Leafs a 4-0 lead.
"None of the goals today were Scott's fault," said Devils head coach Peter DeBoer after the game. "He being pulled was just a matter of waking the team up and sending a message, and he knows it."
Up next, the Leafs will try to avenge their playoff meltdown in Beantown against the Boston Bruins on Hockey Night in Canada.

So I've decided to change my slider set to increase the realism and difficulty. The slider set I am now using is Phantom's REAL-SIM Sliders. Hopefully this will provide some what of a challenge to win games and hopefully stop me from scoring 5-7 goals a game.

Bruins Dominate Third Period to Pick Up Win
Eriksson Nets Game Winner in Dominant Third
After blowing up the New Jersey Devils 6-1 at home on Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs got a tougher challenge against the Boston Bruins, the same team that made a comeback to knock the Maple Leafs out of the playoffs a year ago.
James Van Riemsdyk opened the scoring in the first period on a deflection in the low slot after Dion Phaneuf picked up a turnover and put a shot towards the net. But with less than one second left in the period, Riley Smith scored on a errant pass off the skates of Leafs center Tyler Bozak, tying the game at one a piece.
The second period would prove to be indecisive, as neither team scored to take the lead.
The Bruins turned on the offensive guns in the third period, firing 22 shots on net towards Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier, who stopped 35 of 37 shots he faced on the night. However, the Bruins offence was too much, as Louis Eriksson finally scored on a deflection in the low slot to put the Bruins up for good.
Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask was brilliant in goal, making 38 saves, letting only the JVR deflection hit the back of the net.
The Leafs continue their road trip as the head to Minnesota to take on the red hot Minnesota Wild in what should be an interesting matchup.

Going Wild in Minny
Late Second Period Goal Becomes Winner, Wild Beat Leafs
A jet lagged team going to battle against a star-studded lineup that features Zach Parise, Ryan Suter and Thomas Vanek didn't play out well for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as they lost their second straight game of their road trip, falling 3-1 to the Wild.
Kyle Brodziak opened the scoring at the six minute mark of the first period, finishing a nice passing play set up by Jason Pominville and Nino Niederreiter.
The Leafs answered back with the first goal of the second period when Dion Phaneuf pounded home a one-timer right off a Nazem Kadri faceoff win. However, the victory was short lived, Kyle Brodziak scored his second of the season and second of the game to give the Wild the lead once again.
A Jason Pominville goal with 16 seconds left in the second period, followed by a scoreless third sealed the fate for the Leafs, who now head on to Buffalo to face the Sabres in their last game of this three game road trip.
