Re: In A New York Minute...My BAP/OS'ers Race to the NHL
I arrived in Hartford ready to take my career to the next level. After getting straightened away at the hotel, I went to the XL Center to meet with GM Jim Schoenfeld and head coach Ken Gernander. I didn't really know what to expect from them. They quickly told me what they expected of me.
"Hi Derrick, welcome to Hartford. We just wanted to sit down with you and let you know some of our expectations for the upcoming season. You'll start out on the third line with Dane Byers and Greg Moore. We expect you to score 28 goals this year..."
28? Why not 25? Or 30? Ok, whatever...I think to myself.
"We also expect 25 assists."
Shouldn't be a problem.
"We want 64 points from you."
Ok, hold on. 28 goals plus 25 assists is 53 points when I went to school. Unless these guys are using some new kind of math. I'm suddenly unsure about his ability to run an organization. If he hauls out a contract written in crayon, I'm outta here.
"You should get 180 shots."
And if I don't, then what? Are they really that petty?
"Obviously, that last one isn't a must," says Schoenfeld, as if reading my mind.
"Sounds great," I say as I sign the contract. Although I'm disappointed I won't get to play on the top line. I was hoping to center the top line with their two first round picks, James Aldridge and Patrick Cosgrove. Oh well, something to work towards, I guess.
As I leave Jim's office, I see an overweight, greasy looking man heading towards me.
"Derrick? Derrick Thomas?"
"Yeah?"
"Hi, I'm Les Nessman, I work for the NY Times sports section. I cover the Wolfpack for the Times."
I look at Mr. Nessman. His comb over is starting to lift off his head. He must have noticed me looking, because he brushes it back down with his hand.
"I'd like to ask you a couple of questions if you don't mind?"
"Sure, shoot."
"Great. First of all, what kind of an impact do you think you can make here in Hartford?" Nessmans asks with a smile.
"We'll, I plan to work hard everyday, give it 100% everygame and see what happens."
I notice the smile fade slightly. Did I say something wrong? Do I have a big chunk of KFC in my teeth?
"Ok, do you think you can get to New York this season?"
"Well, if I work hard and show them I'm dedicated, hopefully they'll give me a chance. They have some great players up there, so it could be hard to crack the lineup."
The smile is gone now, this interview doesn't seem to be going well for some reason.
"You were picked in the second round by the Rangers, do you think you can make a better impact than the two first rounders, Aldridge and Cosgrove?"
"Those two guys are great players. I'm looking forward to playing on the same team as them and seeing what we can do here in Hartford."
Nessman looks at me.
"Jesus kid, what did ya do? Rehearse this?"
"Yeah, my whole life," I replied with a smile as I headed to the dressing room.
