After losing Game 1 on home ice you had to expect the Avalanche to come out flying tonight right?
It didn't look that way through period one as the Canucks were up 13-7 in shots and were at a 1-1 tie with goals from Boeser and MacKinnon. The Canucks did have two powerplay opportunities but failed to capitalize on either (what else is new).
The second period was where Colorado really ramped up the intensity as they had a lot of quality scoring chances and would bury on one of them when Rantanen found the back of the net. Vancouver would not finish this period without a tie game as Di Guiseppe scored on a breakaway with a minute remaining in the second. Into the third we went at 2 goals a piece, VAN leading in shots 24-20.
It hurt to see Jonathan Drouin score just over three minutes in but it quickly turned into excitement as Cogliano would take a hooking penalty and finally the man advantage would get a goal with Conor Garland scoring on a one timer. Tied ball game once again. Frustratingly however the Canucks would proceed to take two penalties, one for hooking (Poolman) and one for holding (Boeser). It looked like they had gotten away with it after they killed off both penalties but Cale Makar would score just seconds after Boeser was out of the box. 4-3 Colorado with 7:00 remaining. The Canucks pushed as both teams continued to throw shots on net. Finally Quinn Hughes fired a lethal wrist shot from the point that rang off the backbar, It's a 4-4 game! After all this back and forth action, wouldn't you know it... we were going to Overtime.
There was chances at both ends through 5 minutes but the biggest one was Nichushkin being called for a trip on Hughes. Canucks were headed to the powerplay. It was a rough start as Colorado was keeping the opponents out of their zone, clearing pucks when needed. Jack Johnson ended up trapping the puck between the boards and his stick but Conor Garland pried it loose and it bounced to Demko who played it to Hoglander. Garland meanwhile had been heading up ice and when Nils stepped past the forechecking Cogliano, he sent a stretch pass cross ice to him. Garland attacked down the half wall as both Jenner and Boeser headed towards the net. Garland having his head up and using the high I.Q. he's showcased these playoffs, he sent a pass under the stick of Johnson and right on the tape of a trailing Nils Hoglander. The Super Swede made no mistake, absolutely roofing it over the glove of Georgiev. Canucks WIN!
