Season 1 - 63rd Game / 3/4th Point - League Update
Coach Firings
Many teams became frustrated with the lackluster performance of their rosters and made huge moves involving several coaches. Seven head coaches were fired within 21 games.
These include
Cleveland Growlers fire Lee Cogliano after a 9-32-2 start on January 21ststart on and replace him with G. Daigenuealt (Associate Coach)
KC scouts fire Jamal Bieksa after 13-34-2 start on January 14, 2023, and replace him with associate coach H. Fenton (Associate coach)
Portland Red Hawks fired Bear Cunningham after a 13-38-7 start and replace him with B. Yzerman (associate coach). This is a strange firing as Bear Cunningham is considered one of the game's best defensive coaches with an A rating. He looks to see several offers in the offseason
Emilio DiPietro has been fired from the Hartford Whalers after a 16-35-2 start on Feb 1st to replace him with A. Halpern (associate coach). This is the strangest since their sitting in a playoff spot (along with Emilio having an A rating)
The San Diego Golden Seals fired Georges st Jaques after an 18-41-4 start and replace him with A. Lehoux (associate coach) despite being 1 pt out of a wild card spot... Another A-rated coach
The Atlanta Gladiators fire Trenton Girard after the 12-36-6 start and replace him with D. Henry (associate coach)
The Quebec Nordiques fired Francis morgan after the 11-42-6 start and replace him with G. Byers (associate coach) as their new coach
Trades
The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded 2024 5th round pick, G Filip Lindberg (74, starter potential, 24) and G Joel Blomquist (77, Fringe starter potential, 21) to Houston Astros in exchange for a 3rd in 2024 and Franz Nilsen (76, 38, 2-way contract)
Grade for Houston : C+ - The Astros downgraded their draft picks, but still grabbed a couple of valuable (for them at least) prospects. At the very least, it might make their team watchable
Grade for Pittsburgh : A - The Penguins managed to get rid of middling prospects and add a more valuable pick for the deadline. Franz Nilsen can help out the AHL team, or step in as a healthy scratch for a playoff team.
The New York Rangers acquire D, Justin Shultz (81 Ovr, 32, 3M for 2 years) , a 2023 4th round pick, and a 2023 6th round pick in exchange for Ryder Korczak (71 Ovr, 20, Top-6F pot), and a 3rd round pick.
Grade for New York: C - New York wants to upgrade their defensive core, but only upgrading their defense slightly isn't a great help for what they gave up. They won't care about the prospects or the pick if they win it all this year.
Grade for Seattle: B - Seattle gets an established prospect that can contribute in the AHL next year along with a stronger draft pick. Getting rid of Shultz's contract can't hurt as well.
