MAYDAY? CALL MIDEY... AGAIN
Report by Matt Schmidlin | September 10, 2022

Three Thoughts from the Peanut Gallery

1. Midey Made of Steel, Plays Superman Again

The Panthers wore their new iteration of their 'Steel City' themed threads, with a grayscale color palette replacing the black and gold of the past few seasons. However, it was kicker Johnny Midey who played the Man of Steel yet again for the Panthers, holding his nerve and drilling all four of his field goal attempts, including the game winner from 23 yards out as time expired. While none was longer than 37 yards (with three from inside 30), Midey continued his strong start to the season as one of the prime reasons why the Panthers have escaped their first trio of matchups unscathed. The sophomore is now 11/13 on field goals this season in just three games.

2. Special Day for Specialists

DeAnthony Hamilton isn't likely to see many snaps in the backfield with Da'vion Reynolds leading a strong Panthers stable of running backs, but the freshman found a way to make a massive impact for the Panthers on special teams. After Pitt pinned FSU deep in their own territory, the speedster took the ensuing punt 42 yards to the house, briefly giving the Panthers the lead and keeping them in the contest before their dramatic win. Hamilton's return was impressive, with the freshman showing off both his breakaway speed and slippery ability as he shed a pair of tackles en route to the endzone.

3. More of the Same in the Red Zone

Pitt continues to find ways to make things for difficult for themselves, finding it nearly impossible to punch the ball in once they are in scoring position. An astonishing seven trips to the red zone somehow only turned into one touchdown and a quartet of field goals, as one huge instance saw Pitt fail to score on 4th down late in the third quarter as Shane Mitchell was stopped inches short (though they were bailed out by Hamilton's ensuing score). The lack of six point trips will likely keep Pat Narduzzi at night and could be a problem for the Panthers if it is not rectified.

Not sure how long ago you played this and if there was any rust involved, but with that difference in yardage I'm sure you'd like to have had a more comfortable win. Nonetheless, just getting the win is the most important thing, especially at home in one of your tougher ACC tests!

I appreciate the feedback my guy! Definitely that has been the mantra through these first couple games of the season is just keeping the win total going +1 because we certainly have not been our best, offensively being the most focal point.

I actually had played like 3 games past this one when I took a hiatus, so I still have all that footage and have been editing all of it so that I can kind of start rolling through updates here and be consistent because I have content played out ahead of schedule, so that later games on the schedule will be interesting since I haven't played in a while!

Week 3 Recap: No Fight in the Irish
Report by Matt Schmidlin | September 12, 2022

Cinderella Struck Down at 6 PM

UCF, in the rankings at #20 with star freshman Jayden Maxwell Jr. under center, couldn't compete with uber-talented Penn State and fell, 45-14, in Happy Valley. Maxwell struggled, throwing 3 INTs while PSU dual threat Marques Gordon compiled a pair of throwing and running scores each in the victory.

Triple Trouble

Georgia used the trio of HB AJ Jackson-Stroud (145 yards), QB Karter Ford (83 yards), and HB Kalen Huggins (81 yards), all three of which ran for a score as the Bulldogs routed North Texas, 42-23. Ford threw for three TDs and 182 yards in the win as well.

No Fight in the Irish

Michigan star sophomore HB Myles Bigsby ran roughshod through the Notre Dame defenses, piling up three scores as the #14 Wolverines blitzed the #8 Irish, 38-10, in the Big House.

Bordeaux Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

Pitt fifth-year senior DT Malachi Bordeaux has earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors following the Panthers victory against Florida State last weekend.

The defensive captain racked up five tackles, including one sack that also forced a fumble, in helping lead the Pitt defense in the narrow win.

Panther Cubs: Top QB reportedly in attendance for Panthers win over Seminoles

Star Central PA QB Robert Brown (6'5", 230, 4-Star, #10 QB) was seen in the stands for the Panthers' 32-29 victory over Florida State this past Saturday, as reported by many postings on Twitter.

The dual-threat signal caller hails from Chambersburg, PA, which is about a 3 hour drive from campus. However, Brown's parents both attended the university and often trek back to the 'Burgh for Panther home games, with the big tilt against the Seminoles being no exception.

Brown has been lighting up central PA defenses to start his senior year, leading the Trojans to an early 4-0 record while compiling an impressive 824 yards passing and 342 yards rushing with 16 total TDs (10 passing, 6 rushing).

While the senior signal caller has yet to take his official visit to Pitt, the Panthers are the clear favorite to secure his signature when signing day approaches. With Pitt set to embark on a three game roadtrip, Brown is expected to officially visit for the Panthers' home contest against Virginia Tech in Week 7. Kansas State, Georgia Tech, and the service academies Army and Navy are the other notable schools who have offered Brown.

Take a look at the below table for a full overview of the Panthers current offer list for the Class of 2023:

Last Meeting at Venue (1971): 29-25 Pitt
All Time Series: 9-6 UCLA
Dynasty Series: 1-0 Pitt

Three Bruins to Watch Out For

Jacob Babineaux, OLB -- One of the nation's top recruits out of Louisiana in 2020, Babineaux has been sensational in two seasons for the Bruins, and the junior is a tour de force and the star on an extremely talented Bruins defense. The Pitt offense has been incredibly inconsistent all season so far, and should be in for arguably their toughest challenge yet.

Chris Sanders, HB -- Last year, Dwayne Meadows torched the Pitt run defense for 217 yards and a touchdown. Sanders has assumed the starter's mantle this season and racked up an impressive 164.5 YPG in the Bruin's opening two contests. If he can keep that pace up it will be a long day for the Panthers.

Justin Wright, WR -- One of the top WR prospects in the country, Wright has been held in check early as he looks to build a rapport with new starter Iyaz Durbin. If the Bruins can get the running game going, Wright should get plenty of opportunities against a tough Panthers secondary who will likely be doubling him all day.

What to Expect on the Field This Saturday

Sound Off: Can the Panthers keep their momentum rolling in their first road test of the 2022 season?
