As expected, the Lions had a relatively quiet free agency. Their most notable free agent signing was bringing back running back C.J. Anderson. Guard Wyatt Teller was brought in to give depth at guard. And QB Ryan Tannehill was signed to back up Matthew Stafford. Jakeem Grant was signed to compete for return duties, and add depth at WR, and Safety Derrick Kindred was added as depth in the secondary. The Lions were never connected to any of the big name free agents.
Draft wise, the Lions management feel like they had a very good draft. They traded out of the first round, grabbing an extra 2nd and 4th round picks. And they still got the player they were targeting, in Guard Duncan Bell. Bell ended up beating out Kenny Wiggins (who was ultimately released) and Wyatt Teller for the starting LG spot.
Later in the second round, the Lions nabbed WR Cole Morse. He will likely serve as the #4 receiver, behind Kenny Golladay, Rod Tidwell, and Marvin Jones. In the third round, the Lions took Tackle Carlos Weston. He made the team and will serve in a reserve role, though the team feels he might be able to subplant Rick Wagner at some point.
The Lions had two picks in the 4th round, and feel they got steals with both. First, they took Cornerback Leon Sandcastle, out of Florida State. Sandcastle is thought of as a Deion Sanders clone. He is very good in coverage, and also a good return man. He won the starting corner spot opposite Darius Slay. With their other 4th round pick, they tool linebacker Alvin Mack, out of Michigan. Mack led the Wolverines in tackles last season, and added 7.5 sacks, even though he missed the first 3 games of the season.
The Lions also added DE Jaren Morse with the 5th round pick, HB Wendell Brown with their 6th rounder, and QB Jon Moxon with their 7th rounder. All three impressed enough in the pre-season to make the final roster. The Lions have high hopes for Moxon, and kept him on the roster rather than signing him to the practice squad and risk losing him to another team. Brown played so well, that he may find him self in the regular rotation.
