Re: Reviving the Boom | A Seattle Seahawks franchise story

Seattle -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Seahawks fanatics. In this blog, I have some tidbits, musings and rumors to discuss. I’ll be doing a weekly report on all things related the Seattle Seahawks. That could be an injury take, trade takes and even mock draft takes as the season progresses. Hope you join the discussion!

Seattle have the chance this week to own their first winning record of the season, so excitement is starting to gather around town. With the trade deadline come and gone, it’s been a relatively quiet week for the Seahawks.

• We can safely say Mike Macdonald's decision to bench Matt Corral and start Sam Howell was the right decision and the defining moment of the year for Seattle. With Corral as QB1 - the Seahawks went 1-3. With Sam Howell as QB1 - the Seahawks have improved drastically and boast a 3-1 record - with three consecutive wins.

• For one of the few times this season, the club haven’t made a midweek transaction on the main roster. They’re still waiting for Mecole Hardman to return from injury and then they’re pretty much back to a clean bill of health less the players on injured reserve. The Chiefs did steal UDFA Josh Proctor from the practice squad with Seattle signing two-year veteran Josh Thompson as his replacement.

Laviska Shenault Jr had a huge game for the Seahawks playing predominantly in the slot. There was a few risky balls that lost steam through the air and Shenault continuously tracked them down and turned them into big gains. Every once in awhile a depth player needs to have an impact and that’s what Shenault had against their division rivals.

• Newly acquired Sam Williams only played in 20 snaps – but he made it count. He never managed to record a sack in his debut game but he chased down Kyler Murray and made him toss the ball away on numerous occasions. Dallas never wanted to give him a chance, Seattle are giving him an opportunity to make an impact.

• Trent Simpson had a great game following his impact performance on Monday night six days before. In the last two games, he has played 23 and 24 snaps, which is double what he had been playing in previous weeks. Against the Cardinals, he finished second on the team with 6 tackles. His playing time is increasing, so it begs the question: Will he eventually become starter this season? The Seahawks have had some good results in combining Kenneth Murray Jr and Trenton Simpson together with the latter having all the tools to be the next Bobby Wagner of the defense.

• Here’s the latest rumor I’ve heard: The Seahawks have begun to enter negotiations with starting free safety Julian Love on a new contract. His expires at the end of the season. According to sources, he turned down a 2 year, $7.6m deal with the Seahawks tabled this week. He’s reportedly looking for a 2 year, $9.6m deal.

• Credit to Zach Charbonnet for his walkoff 27 yard touchdown run in overtime over the weekend. He burst through a gap in the middle and sprinted straight to the endzone. Charbonnet has really struggled this season, he’s averaged 2.5 yards per carry so this play was important in restoring confidence from his struggles this season.

• It’s not all good news though. The Seahawks have announced they have placed Laviska Shenault on injured reserve after breaking his thumb against the Jets. His injury will reportedly take 7 weeks to heal which was too long for Seattle to keep a roster spot open with injuries piling up as the season progresses. Shenault Jr was playing well in the slot this season, catching 19 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns. The silver lining is Mecole Hardman Jr has returned to practice and will play this weekend against the Miami Dolphins.

• Contract talks are still ongoing with free safety Julian Love, who rejected the first contract proposed by the Seahawks. The Seahawks reportedly increased their offer to 2 years, $8 million which the player has also shot down. Talks will continue as the Seahawks seek to keep their safety locked up for the future.

• The Seahawks recently traded for Sam Williams. They’ve eased him in with 20 snaps in his debut against Arizona where he recorded a half sack. Over the weekend, he played 60 snaps against the New York Jets and recorded 8 tackles, four tackles for a loss and a sack in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks have recently been getting to the quarterback more often and Williams could be an important factor in rescuing their season.

• Another player who is starting to get to the quarterback is Boye Mafe who has followed up his 2 sack performance against Arizona with a half sack against New York. If Seattle’s defense can gel and pressure the quarterback their defense will become one of the best in the NFL. Despite having a poor pass rush conversion percentage to begin the season, they boast the 14th best defense in the league.

• Rookie Devontez Walker had his breakout game, catching 6 passes and leading the team with 81 receiving yards in their overtime win over the Jets. Coming into the game, the rookie had only four receptions for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns. When Lavishka Shenault went down with an injury, Walker moved into the slot and performed admirably. He now has touchdowns in consecutive weeks as the Seahawks monitor how his rookie season is progressing.

• With 52 men on the roster with Shenault Jr being placed on injured reserve, the Seattle Seahawks have re-signed inside linebacker Blake Martinez to a one-year deal – which will effectively last for the remaining eight games – minus any postseason appearances.
