Seattle -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Seahawks fanatics. In this blog, I have some tidbits, musings and rumors to discuss. I’ll be doing a weekly report on all things related the Seattle Seahawks. That could be an injury take, trade takes and even mock draft takes as the season progresses. Hope you join the discussion!
Seattle have the chance this week to own their first winning record of the season, so excitement is starting to gather around town. With the trade deadline come and gone, it’s been a relatively quiet week for the Seahawks.
• We can safely say Mike Macdonald's decision to bench Matt Corral and start Sam Howell was the right decision and the defining moment of the year for Seattle. With Corral as QB1 - the Seahawks went 1-3. With Sam Howell as QB1 - the Seahawks have improved drastically and boast a 3-1 record - with three consecutive wins.
• For one of the few times this season, the club haven’t made a midweek transaction on the main roster. They’re still waiting for Mecole Hardman to return from injury and then they’re pretty much back to a clean bill of health less the players on injured reserve. The Chiefs did steal UDFA Josh Proctor from the practice squad with Seattle signing two-year veteran Josh Thompson as his replacement.
•
Laviska Shenault Jr had a huge game for the Seahawks playing predominantly in the slot. There was a few risky balls that lost steam through the air and Shenault continuously tracked them down and turned them into big gains. Every once in awhile a depth player needs to have an impact and that’s what Shenault had against their division rivals.
• Newly acquired Sam Williams only played in 20 snaps – but he made it count. He never managed to record a sack in his debut game but he chased down Kyler Murray and made him toss the ball away on numerous occasions. Dallas never wanted to give him a chance, Seattle are giving him an opportunity to make an impact.
• Trent Simpson had a great game following his impact performance on Monday night six days before. In the last two games, he has played 23 and 24 snaps, which is double what he had been playing in previous weeks. Against the Cardinals, he finished second on the team with 6 tackles. His playing time is increasing, so it begs the question: Will he eventually become starter this season? The Seahawks have had some good results in combining Kenneth Murray Jr and Trenton Simpson together with the latter having all the tools to be the next Bobby Wagner of the defense.
• Here’s the latest rumor I’ve heard: The Seahawks have begun to enter negotiations with starting free safety Julian Love on a new contract. His expires at the end of the season. According to sources, he turned down a 2 year, $7.6m deal with the Seahawks tabled this week. He’s reportedly looking for a 2 year, $9.6m deal.
