I've been pretty diehard about PES 2017. I'm still playing in, and I really enjoy it. It's always felt like the games are organic and unique.

I want to say I played a little of the demo for 2018, but never touched 2019 or 2020.

I'd love to see someone do a neutral synapsis on what each iteration of the game did/didn't do well. Maybe a pro/con type of thing.
Well, on the FIFA side in the past few years they have really (REALLY) dumbed down the AI teammate defense and AI opponent defense, which apparently was because people (competitive/online) were having their AI teammates defend for them and I guess that really needed to be addressed. To the point that it made a joke out of offline play, with the CPU opponent letting you just stand near their own penalty area without ever closing down.

PES I really noticed post-17 has attempted to make playing the CPU mimic playing against another human player in an online setting, if you get what I mean. As opposed to replicating what a real life match would look like. Some might argue that it makes the game more fun, but to each his own I guess. FIFA 21 is actually adding a "Competitor Mode" difficulty level which will make you feel like you are playing against a top competitive player. Sounds familiar.

Re: PES 2017 & 2018

After growing tired of the AI passing 60m from in their half up to their lone striker to build their attacks, I’m once again playing 2017 and 2018, and having a blast.

I keep reading about how 2021 is the most realistic ever, but to me, that is only said by those obsessed with animations and physics as opposed to how realistic teams play against you.

Yes, ball and player physics lead to realism, but how realistic is it when they move in a realistic way but don’t act in a realistic way?

Playing through a Champions League campaign in 2017–the AI committed eight fouls against me, not including offsides.

You love to see it.

Nine fouls tonight, four yellow cards, and a penalty. 25-minute match. So fun.

If you are referring to console version I agree but modded PC version is almost as good as PES 17 to me. Now a modded PES 17 is really amazing I working on getting one up and running now as there is a dedicated community still keep this game alive.

Yeah, PS4–no gaming PC for me, and likely not for some time due to the pricing/card issues.

Otherwise I’d be all up in the modded 2021 version.

But what keeps me coming back to 2017 now is how the AI plays, even plain old vanilla.

Literally just re bought this today. Cannot wait to put in another 25 master league seasons.

Re: PES 2017 & 2018

I found PES 2019 for cheap, and I never really played it, so I picked that up, also because...I don't know. Going to give it a shot, as well—so far had decent results at editing AI tactics and having them play how I want them to.
