Louisville, KY- The Mountaineers came inot Louisville looking for a tough game against the #5 ranked Louisville Cardinals; however, the game was much easier than expected.
The Mountaineers scored on their opening drive. Then, Louisville's Heisman candidate quarterback Brian Brohm threw an interecption which was returned to the Cardinals 20 yard line. Pat White threw a touchdown pass to bring the score to 14-0 in WVU's favor. Loisville marched down the field the very next drive and ended up with a 4th and 6 from the WVU 26 yard line. Louisville lined up for a field goal which would cut the score to 14-3; however, Louisville tried a bit of trickery. The holder picked up the ball and imediately threw the ball to the left. The pass fell incomplete and resulted in a turnover on downs. The kick would have been blocked anyways, so it really did not matter, Louisville got the ball back minutes later and scored a touchdown. He extra point was vlocked making the score 14-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. WVU opened up a 24-13 halftime lead and was in complete control of the game. The Mountaineers blew it open in the 2nd half outscored the Cardinals 20-7.
Pat White was excellent throwing for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns. Steve Slaton ran for 137 yards and a touchdown as well.
Mountaineer head coach Rich Rodruguez said following Thursday's game, "Wow, after last year's game I thought I was going to have a heart attack, after this year's game I feel great! I knew we had it in us! I knew we could beat the Cardinals! I just didn't know we could beat them this bad."
The Mountaineer defense was good. The Mountaineer defense hald the #1 scoring team in the nation to just 20 points (Louisville averages 51 points per game) on 343 yards of total offense.
Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm only completed 10 of his 21 pass attempts, but threw for 216 yards. Brohm said following the game, "I just couldn't find any open receivers, the secondary locked them up." Running back Michael Bush had a big day, running for 127 yards on just 18 carries and catching 4 passes for 101 yardsaand a touchdown.
This win could very well propel the Mountaineers could propel the Mountaineers to yet another Big East title. At least, Mountaineer fans hope so.
