Backup safety suspended for 2 games
BYU Football News

It appears that the Cougars will be one man short on defense and special teams next week, as junior SS Tony Roach has been suspended for two games.

Roach, a special teams performer and backup safety, apparently skipped out on an exam and has not been having the best of luck academically. Roach will miss the next 2 games.

BYU welcomes #23 Wisconsin next weekend.

Dunn leads BYU to upset of #23 Wisconsin
BYU Football News

Senior QB Will Dunn made a huge early-season statement for his Heisman campaign, throwing for 446 yards and accounting for all 6 BYU TDs in a 45-38 upset of #23 Wisconsin. Dunn fired 2 TD passes to begin the 4th quarter to break a 31-31 deadlock and boost the Cougars to the win.

"Will is just an amazing player," BYU head coach Kyle Borland said after the win. "He just knows how to win. I think last year gave him the confidence he needed to take this program to the next level, and right now he is just booming with the needed level of intelligence and trust. He is going to have a special year."

BYU and Wisconsin had an absolute slugfest for the first 3 quarters of the game, answering score for score and never letting the other team gain any kind of advantage. Wisconsin scored the 1st TD of game after a long drive, in which they capitalized on a Tim Brewer fumble. The Cougars would answer back early in the 2nd quarter with a Billy Parker field goal, and took the lead soon after when Dunn found sophomore WR Ross Hill for a 49-yard catch-and-run TD. Unfortunately for BYU, their lead was short-lived, as Wisconsin CB/KR Joe Peterson returned the ensuing kickoff for a score.

The Badgers got a field goal to push their lead to 17-10, but BYU answered with only 8 seconds left in the 1st half when Dunn found Hill again for a 12-yard TD hookup. Both teams headed into the half tied at 17.

The slugfest continued in the 3rd quarter, as Wisconsin capitalized on a Travis McCullar fumble and took a 24-17 lead. Dunn wouldn't let BYU stay behind though, as he threw a TD and ran for another to put BYU back on top at 31-24. Wisconsin RB Cedric Alston would counter with a 60-yard TD scamper, sending the game into the final frame tied at 31.

The 4th quarter belonged to Dunn and BYU though, as Dunn threw 2 TD passes to put the game out of reach at 45-31. The Badgers scored with only 11 seconds left to account for the final tally.

Dunn threw for 446 yards and 5 TD on 21-of-30 passing and was only intercepted once. He also added 44 yards rushing and a TD run, sending a message to all the Heisman voters out there.

Dunn's main targets were senior WR Bryan Williams and Hill. Williams totaled 180 yards and a 61-yard TD catch, while Hill finished with 136 yards and 2 scores. Sophomore RB Tim Brewer struggled running against the tough Badger defense, piling up only 61 yards on 28 carries.

For the #23-ranked Badgers, they put up quite a fight in trying to beat the Cougars. Alston ran for 161 yards and a score on 25 carries, while QB Chris Pierce threw for 169 yards and 3 TDs.

BYU begins 2-0 but faces arguably their toughest task next week on the road. The Cougars will travel to take on #6 Texas Tech.

Red Raiders use 28-point quarter to rock BYU
BYU Football News

Coming off last week's upset of then-#23 Wisconsin, BYU had their hopes high and their confidence even higher. Unfortunately, they ran into a defensive brick wall and an offensive rocket launch.

The #6-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders scored 28 unanswered points in the 2nd-quarter and held the usually-explosive BYU offense in check to roll over the Cougars 53-24. QB Marcello Mills threw for 303 yards and 5 TDs before leaving midway through the 3rd quarter with an injury, and the Raider defense shut down senior QB Will Dunn and the Cougar offense.

"At halftime, I was pissed off because I thought Texas Tech was not that good of a team," Coach Borland said. "But they showed me something different in the 2nd half. They are that good of a team."

BYU hung with Texas Tech through the 1st quarter, but it quickly turned into a blowout. Mills and the Red Raider passing game quickly capitalized on a Tim Brewer fumble to take a 7-0 lead, but BYU's Heisman hopeful Dunn answered back with his feet, scampering 69 yards to tie the game at 7.

Unfortunately for Dunn and BYU, it was the closest they would get. Mills led 4 straight scoring drives, throwing a TD pass to cap off each one, and the Red Raider defense shut down Dunn & co. Dunn's 69-yard run was the highest output he would get on the day, as the Texas Tech defense ravaged the BYU offensive line and collected 7 sacks. Dunn finished the day with only 10 yards rushing due to the loss of yards he had to endure.

The 2nd half didn't get any easier for BYU. Dunn did throw 2 TD passes, but Texas Tech returned a kickoff for a TD, got a TD pass from their backup QB, and recorded a safety to keep the Cougars at bay.

Dunn had a decent day but BYU really made no dent against the tough Red Raider defense. Dunn threw for 338 yards and 2 TDs on 26-of-45 passing and was picked off once. Dunn totaled 10 yards on 15 carries and a his 69-yard TD run.

Texas Tech sacked Dunn 7 times, pressured and hurried him over 10 times, and forced 5 turnovers. They held BYU to only 31 yards rushing, their lowest output of the season.

Senior WR Bryan Williams had a good day receiving despite the loss, totaling 190 yards and a 69-yard score. Sophomore Travis McCullar added 71 yards and a TD as well. Sophomore RB Tim Brewer totaled only 21 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

The BYU defensive line had a good day applying pressure, but go no help from the Cougar secondary. BYU recorded 12 sacks, hurried several throws and help to force 3 interceptions, but the Cougars still gave up 422 yards through the air and 6 TDs.

In the injury department, BYU lost a key piece to their offensive line. Sophomore center Erick Lacey, who missed last year's bowl game due to injury, went down in the 3rd quarter with an arm injury. Lacey suffered a bruised shoulder and will miss the next 3 weeks.

BYU returns home next week to start conference play, but they have a tough task awaiting. Ranked TCU will visit Provo for their annual conference opener. BYU has beaten the Horned Frogs twice in a row, including a 45-10 thrashing last season.

Freshman starter will sit 3 games
BYU Football News

Some troubling news came out of Provo today, as freshman MLB Ryan Prater will be suspended for the next 3 games.

Prater, BYU's top recruit this past season and a current starter, has reportedly been receiving easy treatment from several professors in his classes, which is a direct violation of the school's academic code.

BYU will welcome #21 TCU for their conference opener this upcoming weekend. The Cougars currently have a 2-game winning streak over the Horned Frogs, including a 45-10 shellacking last season.

Dunn does it again as BYU smokes #21 TCU
BYU Football News

BYU continued their winning streak over TCU with a 56-24 thrashing at home to open conference play. Senior QB Will Dunn threw for 324 yards and 5 TDs and the Cougar defense was outstanding to help BYU overcome a 17-14 deficit and roll to victory.

TCU, which had dominated the Mountain West for years before Coach Borland came to BYU, has now suffered 3 tough losses to the Cougars. This one has to be the toughest one, as the Horned Frogs allowed BYU to score 35 unanswered points in the 2nd half to pull away for the win.

Dunn and BYU actually got off to a rough start in the game before turning it around. Dunn threw an interception on BYU's 1st drive and the Horned Frogs capitalized on it with a 49-yard TD run from RB Christian Mangiero to put TCU up early 10-0. BYU answered back when sophomore RB Tim Brewer took a handoff and raced 45 yards for a score to cut the lead to 10-7.

In the 2nd quarter, Dunn led the Cougars on an 18-play, 94-yard drive that took up the majority of the quarter and capped it off with a 9-yard TD pass to senior WR Bryan Williams to give BYU a 14-10 lead. BYU got a defensive stop, but Dunn made a costly mistake on the ensuing drive. Dunn tried to fire a short pass to sophomore WR Ross Hill on 3rd down, but it was intercepted by TCU DE Adam Johnson, who returned it 25 yards for a TD and a 17-14 lead.

Dunn shook off the mistake fast though, as he found Hill on the next drive for a huge 68-yard catch-and-run TD to put BYU back up 21-17 just before the half.

The 3rd and 4th quarter belonged to the Cougars, as Dunn threw 3 TD passes, including 2 more to Hill, and BYU got TD runs from Brewer and backup QB John Crews to put the game out of reach at 56-17. TCU scored on a late kickoff return to account for the final score.

Dunn had a great day in leading BYU's 2nd Top 25 upset in the last 3 weeks. The senior Heisman candidate threw for 324 yards and 5 TDs on 22-of-34 passing and was picked off twice. Dunn also added 42 yards rushing.

Dunn's main targets on the day was Williams, who totaled 126 yards and a TD, and Hill, who ended up with 129 yards and 3 scores. Sophomore TE Richard Meyer caught his 1st TD of the season on the 1st play of the 4th quarter. Brewer had a surprisingly good workworse-type of a game against one of the nation's best run defenses, piling up 124 yards on 31 carries and 2 TDs.

The BYU defense was awesome against the Horned Frogs. The Cougars held #21 TCU to only 208 total yards, only 8 first downs and forced 5 turnovers, including 4 interceptions on QB Marlin Thomas.

BYU hits the road next week to take on San Diego State. The Cougars beat the Aztecs 45-28 last season.

More trouble for BYU
BYU Football News

BYU will be without a tight end this upcoming weekend. Backup freshman TE Chase Clement, one of BYU's top recruits from last season, will be suspended for 3 games due to a violation of team rules.

A source close to the team reports that Clement was recently involved in an off-the-field altercation with some other students. The details on the situation were not known.

BYU hits the road to take on San Diego State this upcoming weekend.

Dunn & co. put up 59 points, almost 700 yards on Aztecs
BYU Football News

The BYU offense was unstoppable today against the hapless San Diego State Aztecs, piling up 691 total yards in a 59-34 road victory. Senior QB Will Dunn accumulated 487 total yards and accounted for 5 TDs as BYU built up a 38-14 halftime lead and never looked back.

BYU got off to a fast start with some big plays in the 1st quarter. Dunn found senior WR Bryan Williams for an 86-yard catch-and-run TD for the game's 1st score, and sophomore RB Tim Brewer added fireworks of his own with a 66-yard TD jolt. After an Aztec TD, BYU put points on the board again when sophomore WR Ross Hill returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD.

Dunn did have some trouble throwing the ball in the early going though, as the Aztec capitalized on his 2nd interception to cut BYU's lead to 21-14. It didn't take long for BYU to re-open the blowout, as Brewer scored his 2nd TD run and Dunn threw his 2nd TD pass with just over a minute left in the half to push BYU to their 38-14 halftime advantage.

Dunn opened the 2nd half with an awesome 70-yard TD scamper, but San Diego State would not go away quietly. The Aztecs scored 2 TDs to cut the Cougars' lead to 45-27, but it was the closest they would get.

Dunn threw for one score and added another on the ground in the 4th quarter to help put the game away.

BYU put together their most explosive game on offense in defeating SDSU. The Cougars totaled 691 yards, including a season-high 317 on the ground, and picked up 27 first downs.

Leading the way for BYU once again was Dunn, who made a big statement after falling out of the Heisman Watch last week. The senior QB threw for 374 yards and 3 TDs on 19-of-32 passing, and crossed the century mark for rushing for the 1st time this season. Dunn ran for 113 yards on 20 carries and 2 TDs.

Helping out Dunn with a healthy dose of the run game was Brewer. The sophomore sensation piled up 189 yards on only 23 carries and scored 2 long TDs. Leading the way catching the ball was Hill and Williams. Williams totaled 177 yards receiving and his long TD, while Hill added 117 yards. Sophomore WR Travis McCullar and senior TE Cody Atkinson each caught a TD pass as well.

The BYU defense struggled again against the Aztecs but still managed to record 12 sacks and pick off 3 passes. Sophomore DE Terrell Porter picked up 5 sacks on the day, while sophomore MLB Troy Battle collected 3 himself.

The Cougars will look to continue their conference winning streak, which is now at 5 games, next week on the road at New Mexico. Last year, BYU came back to beat the Lobos 27-24.
