Re: Building A Career: A NCAA Football Coaching Dynasty
thanks! yeah i thought it was a huge win... I was so worried TCU was going to tie it and send it into OT... They had 3 chances in the 4th quarter but my D held tight each time

10/1 @ San Diego State
BYU rallies in final minutes to survive weird road game
BYU Football News How do you overcome THREE defensive TDs by your opponent? By mounting a late comeback, of course. BYU scored 2 TDs in the last 2 minutes to rally and beat San Diego State on the road 37-32. The Aztecs scored 3 defensive TDs in the 2nd half to turn a 24-12 deficit into a 32-24 lead, but the Cougars got a TD pass to bring them within 2 and won the game with only 18 seconds remaining when sophomore RB Scott Taylor scored on a 1-yard plunge. "Man, this was a weird game," BYU head coach Kyle Borland said. "Honestly, we dominated them on offense and seemed to have control of the game, but we turn the ball over 6 times and give up 3 defensive TDs. Fortunately, we were able to make a late comeback and still come out with the win. Still, I don't know what to make out of this game." The Cougars piled up an astonishing 725 yards of offense and 33 first downs, but their 6 turnovers kept the Aztecs in the game. Senior QB Ed Pino broke the BYU school record for passing yards in a game by one yard, finishing with 620 to break the mark set by John Walsh in 1993. Pino completed 35-of-52 passes and 3 TDs, but his 3 interceptions almost doomed the Cougars. Pino hit his top trio of receivers for some amazing numbers on the day. Heisman leader senior WR Oliver Mason recorded another 200-yard output receiving, finishing with 258 yards on 14 catches and a TD. Helping him out with his 1st career 200-yard game was senior slot WR Chris McCargo, who totaled 205 yards on 11 catches and a TD. Senior WR Sheldon Newman had 133 yards on 9 catches and caught the TD pass to bring BYU within 2. BYU jumped out to a hot start against SDSU, using a 60-yard TD run from Taylor and 2 TD passes from Pino to build a 24-12 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter, Aztec OLB Ricky Gray intercepted a Pino pass and returned it 85 yards to cut BYU's lead to 24-19. Later in the 3rd, the Aztecs got another cheap TD when Mason made a critical mistake when he fumbled a punt return into the end zone, where it was recovered by a backup TE to give SDSU the lead at 25-24. "It was a bad mistake on my part," Mason said. "I thought I had signalled for fair catch, but the refs didn't see it. I just wanted to field it cleanly but I got hit and the ball popped loose." San Diego State got another defensive score midway through the 4th quarter as BYU was driving, when Gray intercepted another pass and took this one 73 yards to the house to give SDSU a 32-24 lead. It seemed that BYU's unbeaten streak was all but over. Unfortunately for SDSU, the Cougars picked themselves up off the ground and fought back, putting together another solid drive and topping it off when Pino hit Newman for an 8-yard score. The ensuing 2-point conversion failed, but BYU still had all 3 timeouts. After a good defensive stop, BYU had one last shot to beat the Aztecs. Pino led BYU down the field and put them in great position to win. BYU worked the clock and finally put themselves back on top when Taylor scored his 2nd TD of the day with only 18 seconds to go. Taylor finished with 105 yards rushing. It was a wild game but BYU stays on top of the conference at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. BYU stays on the road and travels to play New Mexico next week. 10/8 @ New Mexico
BYU beats down on New Mexico to remain unbeaten
BYU Football News BYU built up a 20-6 halftime lead and held off a furious New Mexico comeback by continuing to put points on the board in a 48-29 road victory. The win keeps BYU unbeaten at 6-0 and atop the Mountain West standings at 3-0. The Cougars got a solid effort out of their offense and an even better game from their defense in the win. BYU totaled 432 yards on offense and the defense held the Lobos' dangerous runner in Russell Campbell to only 77 yards on the ground. On offense, it was a very balanced attack for BYU in putting up 48 points. Senior QB Ed Pino, fresh off his record-breaking performance last week, was average against New Mexico but that's all BYU needed. Pino threw for 273 yards and two 4th-quarter TDs on 20-of-32 passing for the day. His big target of the day was senior slot WR Chris McCargo, who went over 100 yards for another week. McCargo had 108 yards and caught a 28-yard TD. Heisman front-runner senior WR Oliver Mason was much quieter than he's been the past few weeks, but still crossed the 100-yard mark receiving on the day. His biggest play of the day was a 77-yard 1st-quarter punt return TD. Helping out Pino and the passing game was a solid effort from the BYU running attack, led by sophomore Scott Taylor. Taylor ran for a season and career-high 135 yards on 25 carries and 2 TDs to help keep the pressure off of Pino. Junior RB Walter McGrew returned from injury this week but quickly lost his starting job. McGrew re-injured his shoulder on his 1st carry of the game, and was largely ineffective after he returned. McGrew managed only 12 yards on 8 carries and was pulled in favor of Taylor midway through the 2nd quarter after losing a fumble. Freshman FB Jermaine Hunter scored his 1st career rushing TD in the 3rd quarter, and finished with 8 yards. The BYU defense played similar to the offense - solid but unspectacular - but did just enough to boost the Cougars to victory. Their biggest task of the day was shutting down New Mexico's dynamic RB in Campbell. Campbell scored on a 3-yard run in the 1st quarter, but didn't cause any trouble after that. Campbell finished with only 77 yards on 27 carries for the day. Lobo QB Terrell Love had a good day throwing the ball, especially in the 2nd half as New Mexico attempted to mount a comeback. Love threw for 250 yards and three 2nd-half TDs. BYU returns home next week for their 1st recruiting weekend as they welcome Colorado State. The Cougars will have 4 potential interests coming to visit Provo for the game. This could be Coach Borland's 1st big step to building BYU's program. 10/15 vs. Colorado State
BYU still unbeaten after win over Colorado State
BYU Football News BYU continued their surprising streak to start the year with a decisive 50-20 home victory over the visiting Colorado State Rams. Heisman front-runner senior WR Oliver Mason scored 2 TDs and the BYU defense shut down the Rams to lift the team to the win. Mason showed once again that he is one of the best players in the NCAA this season, totaling 117 yards receiving and scoring twice, including his 4th punt return TD of the year in the 1st quarter. Mason is already well over 1000 yards receiving and is now closing in on 2000 all-purpose yards. Mason and the BYU offense got a lot of help from the Cougar defense, which held Colorado State to only 218 total yards and 7 first downs. BYU was led by senior defensive captain MLB Terence Lewis, who was a big playmaker on the day. Lewis recorded a team-high 7 tackles, including 4 for a loss, 3 sacks, forced a fumble and recorded a safety late in the 4th quarter for BYU's final points. Senior SS Tommy Walker also added to the BYU point total when he recovered the fumble Lewis forced and returned it 14 yards for his 1st career defensive TD. As for the BYU offense, they were good once again as they continue their quest to be the nation's #1 offense. Senior QB Ed Pino had a solid day throwing the ball, totaling 322 yards and 3 TDs on 27-of-44 passing. Unfortunately for Pino, he did throw 3 interceptions and got knocked out of the game early in the 4th quarter due to injury. Pino suffered a sprained elbow and will miss the next two weeks, including BYU's upcoming game with Air Force. Senior slot WR Chris McCargo had 100 yards receiving and caught 2 TDs, while sophomore RB Scott Taylor totaled 69 yards rushing and a TD. Sophomore QB Will Dunn led BYU with 74 yards on the ground, and will earn his 1st career start against Air Force in a few weeks. BYU has the week off next week but return to conference play the following week at home against Air Force. BYU's unbeaten mark has not only impressed coaches around the Mountain West and experts around the nation, but some top recruits are starting to take notice as well. BYU received two signed letters of intent this week from some of their in-season targets. It is the 1st of many big steps Coach Borland is looking to take in building the BYU program. "We are really excited to be bringing in some good talent right away," Coach Borland said recently. "With a solid pipeline base already established, there is much more we can do and we're going to take advantage of that. At FIU, I seemed restricted to recruiting only in-state players. At BYU, I have a wealth of Western states at my disposal." Recruiting outside of Utah is what Coach Borland has done, as he is going to bring in two recruits that do not hail from BYU's home state. RB Tim Brewer, a 4-star back out of Flower Mound, Texas, will join the Cougars backfield next fall. A good speed back is what Coach Borland needs for his spread option attack, and Brewer should fill that role. Joining the BYU defense will be DE Leigh Wilson, a 3-star end out of Davis, California. Wilson is a solid talent who should get some good experience in Coach Borland's aggressive defense. BYU has a bye next week and will play Air Force at home the week after. Several recruits will be visiting that week as well. |
