Re: #grindtime - a Memphis Grizzlies story
Grizzlies dominate the 4th, win their first road opener since 1995
An opening-night sellout crowd in Miami came to see Jimmy Butler, but the former Sixer layer missed the opening night of his team due to the born of his son.
So Ja Morant stole the show. The n.2 pick scored 16 points in the first quarter, finished the half with 21 and closed the game with 35 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds.
Both teams shot the ball pretty bad in the first half, and it was a back-and-forth game for the majority of the game, with the third quarter ending with a score of 77 to 76. Then the Grizzlies make a 16-2 run, where Valanciunas scored all of his 14 points in the final period of the game, and they never look back.
Rookie Brandon Clarke was also a key factor off the bench with 15 points, 11 rebounds and some key defensive plays in the fourth quarter once Jaren Jackson Jr fouled out.
Goran Dragic led the Butler-less Heat with 19 points off the bench, Justise Winslow also scored 15. Rookies Tyler Herro and Kendrick Nunn combined for 29 points but made only 10 of their 33 total shots.
"I love our energy, I love our defense", said coach Jenkins after his NBA debut. "We made smart plays, we shared the ball. This must be the beginning of an important growth path for us."
"Just the beginning," Morant said. "We have to play like this every day if we want to achieve our goals."
The Heat were also without guard Dion Waiters, suspended one game for conduct detrimental to the team, and forward James Johnson, still out because of a conditioning issue that kept him from training camp and sidelined for all five of Miami's preseason games.
Memphis won his first season-opening game on the road since the franchise's inaugural game at Portland in 1995.
