Many people expected this Orlando team to take some leaps this season, and that appears to be the case after an impressive start. What’s really bizarre about this start to the season is the fact that Orlando is beginning the year on a West Coast road trip. That’s a brutal scheduling quirk but a hot start with that grueling schedule could keep this young team rolling all year. The bench has been the major surprise for this team, and it’s scary to think how good they’ll look once Paolo Banchero, Wendell Carter and Markelle Fultz get going. The Lakers (2-1) had an impressive win Sunday night. They went into Sacramento and were able to make a second half comeback to prevail with a victory. In the past the Lakers have been known to rest players on the second half of a back-to-back set. That looks more likely for potential candidates Anthony Davis and LeBron James after last night. LeBron James led the team with 26 points, hitting 11-of-16 shots from the field and Anthony Davis recorded another 20-20 game with 25 points, 28 rebounds, six assists, two steals and four blocks. Austin Reaves added 22 points, hitting 6-of-8 from the three-point line. The Lakers swept the season series over Orlando last season, winning each of their last six games over them in total. In addition, four of the last five wins have been decided by double-digit margins.

Lakers need overtime to get past young and exciting Magic

Anthony Davis records his second straight game with 20 or more rebounds

After recording a career-high 28 points the night before up in Sacramento, Anthony Davis dominated the boards again and the Lakers needed it. It looked like it was going to be one of those nights for the entire Laker team where shots weren’t falling, they were not in sync on the defensive end and their effort at best was minimal. Heading into the fourth quarter down by two, Anthony Davis who had been pretty quiet the whole night, erupted in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of his 15 points in the final period as the Lakers forced overtime and despite Davis fouling out in the extra period, they still had LeBron James who took over and led the Lakers to a 105-100 victory for their third win in a row after losing on opening night. James finished with 32 points, 10 rebounds and six assists and the Lakers starting backcourt of Russell and Reaves each finished with 17 points apiece. Watching from the bench, Davis had 15 points and 22 rebounds prior to fouling out. The Magic were playing their third game of their five-game road trip to start the season and suffered their first loss of the season after wins over Houston and Portland. Wendell Carter Jr. led the Magic with 19 points and 14 rebounds while last season’s Rookie of the Year, Paolo Banchero finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists, but went 0-for-8 from the three-point line. These two teams will not have to wait long to play each other again as the Lakers will be headed to Orlando on Saturday to begin a four-game road trip.
