Re: Redleg Nation - A Cincinnati Reds Experience (OOTP 22)
Goldschmidt powers Cardinals past Reds in comeback victory Paul Goldschmidt got the party started in the first inning and never relented as he pounded out four hits on the night. But it took the 8th inning double off the bat of Justin Williams to put the Cardinals ahead for good in a wild 10-9 come-from-behind victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Pitching was optional tonight as both starters, as well as both bullpens, struggled to get hitters out. Perhaps the heavy mist that hung around all night was causing them issues with gripping the ball, but it was not a good night for both teams with neither starter factoring into the decision. Roel Ramirez picked up his fourth win of the season for the Cardinals after coming into the game in the 8th inning with two on and two outs and forcing Joey Votto to ground out to keep the Reds from scoring an insurance run. Reds reliever Tejay Antone picked up his fifth loss of the season and his first blown save after giving up the two-run double to Williams. Cardinals' closer Jordan Hicks picked up his 13th save in 15 tries. Notable Performers 1. Christian Colon (Reds): 3 for 5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R 2. Paul Goldschmidt (Cardinals): 4 for 5, HR, RBI, 3 R 3. Tommy Edman (Cardinals): 3 for 4, 3 R, BB
Reds score two in the 9th to for late victory Another day in St. Louis, another day of heavy misting conditions and a late bullpen meltdown. The Cardinals got a masterful pitching performance from starter John Gant. Gant only surrendered a single run in 5.1 innings of work but was surprisingly pulled after only 81 pitches. Regardless of this curiosity, the Cards' bullpen continued keeping the Reds' offense completely off balance. Nolan Arenado would uncork his 5th home run of the season in the 4th inning to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. The Reds would get a run in the 5th inning, but both bullpens would shut down their opposition in the late innings. The fireworks would start in the 9th inning, with Jordan Hicks coming into the game looking for his second save in as many nights with the intensity of the rain picking up. Mike Moustakas would immediately uncork a line drive into the right-center gap to lead the inning off with his seventh double of the season. Eugenio Suarez would follow, and he would also uncork a line drive into the left-center gap for his 11th double of the season that would tie the game at 2-2. After advancing to third on a Nick Senzel groundout, Suarez would score when Hicks' first pitch to Tucker Barnhart would go sailing over the head of Yadier Molina to give the Reds a 3-2 lead. It would be Hicks' third blown save of the season. After the inning, the umpires would call a rain delay that would last 32 minutes, though I'm sure Cardinals fans would've been wishing for that call to have come about ten minutes sooner. Reds' closer Lucas Sims would enter and sit the Cardinals down 1-2-3 with two strikeouts to earn his 15th save in as many chances. Reds reliever Heath Hembree picked up the win after cleaning up the mess in the 8th inning Amir Garrett caused, only needing five pitches to pick up two outs. Notable Performers 1. John Gant (Cardinals) - 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K 2. Ryan Merritt (Reds) - 6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K 3. Eugenio Suarez (Reds) - 3 for 4, 2 2B, RBI, R
Cardinals beat Reds 12-10 in offensive slugfest Pitching was optional today as both teams combined for 22 runs on 34 hits, with the Cardinals coming out ahead in a 12-10 slugfest at Busch Stadium. Neither starter managed to make it out of the fifth inning. Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez gave up five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. He walked two and struck out seven on 103 pitches in the no-decision. Reds' starter Tyler Mahle gave up five runs on six hits in only three innings of work. He walked one and struck out four on only 57 pitches in the no-decision. Things went completely sideways for the Reds in the sixth inning. Reliever Ian Kennedy, who had given up only three runs all season, was charged with five earned runs after only registering two outs in the inning as the Cardinals kept finding holes in the Reds' defense and scored five runs in the inning to put them up 10-7. The Cardinals would add insurance runs in the 7th and 8th inning to secure the victory. Notable Performers 1. Eugenio Suarez (Reds) - 3 for 5, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 R 2. Jesse Winker (Reds) - 3 for 5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R 3. Lane Thomas (Cardinals) - 2 for 5, 3B, 3 RBI, 3 R
Flaherty does it all in 5-2 Cardinals win The Reds were hopeful their de facto ace would be able to salvage a split in this four-game set against the Cardinals. Unfortunately for the Reds, today was not Sonny Gray's day. The Cardinals pounded Gray for four homers as they went on to a 5-2 victory behind an all-around good performance by Jack Flaherty. Flaherty did it today both on the mound and with the bat. With the bat, Flaherty got hits in both his plate appearances, including his first career home run. On the mound, Flaherty didn't have his best stuff, registering a season-low three strikeouts. Still, he kept the Reds off-balance, allowing only two runs on six hits in six innings of work. Jesse Winker was pulled from the game in the first inning after injuring his back while running the bases. He has been listed as day-to-day with a strained back. Notable Performers 1. Jack Flaherty (Cardinals) - 6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3K 2. Max Moroff (Cardinals) - 1 for 3, HR, 2 RBI, R, BB 3. Eugenio Suarez (Reds) - 1 for 2, HR, RBI, R, BB *** MLB News 6/5 -- Royals RP Gabe Speier (3-2, 2 SV, 4.25 ERA) is out for the season with a torn rotator cuff season. 6/5 -- Tigers C Grayson Greiner (.188, 3 HR, 4 RBI) clubs three homers in Tigers' 5-1 win over the White Sox. 6/6 -- Yankees 2B DJ LeMahieu (.328, 3 HR, 28 RBI) will miss the next 5-6 weeks with an elbow sprain. 6/6 -- Brewers RP Eric Lauer (3-3, 5.79 ERA) will miss the next 3-4 weeks with elbow inflammation. |

Re: Redleg Nation - A Cincinnati Reds Experience (OOTP 22)
TEAM NEWS It was not a good week for the Reds for multiple reasons. The Reds dropped three out of four in St. Louis, mostly because of the inability of the pitching staff to consistently get outs. When a team scores 24 runs in a four-game series, you expect to at least win three or maybe even a sweep. Unfortunately, the Reds gave up 29 runs and fell to third place in the NL Central. Even bright spots in the pitching staff were not immune from issues. Sonny Gray was hammered for four homers and five runs on Sunday. Ian Kennedy, who had an ERA of 1.11 heading into the series and had only given up three runs all season, was hit for five runs on Saturday despite only giving up one extra-base hit out of the five hits he gave up. It's not all gloomy. Eugenio Suarez has been hitting the cover off the ball leading him to win the National League Player of the Week award. Suarez, who seems to be rounding back into form after preseason shoulder surgery in 2020, hit four home runs last week to take his season total to ten and has raised his batting average 29 points from .233 to .262. Other Headlines - Jesse Winker was pulled from yesterday's game after complaining of discomfort in his back after he scored the first run of the game. Winker was diagnosed with a strained back and is officially listed as day-to-day. A trip to the injured list is not expected. - In the latest release of All-Star Game voting results, three Reds were listed in the memo from the press release from MLB. Joey Votto (.293 - 9 HR - 33 RBI) currently ranks third amongst NL first basemen with 475,971 votes. The Braves Freddie Freeman (.312 - 10 HR - 39 RBI) is the leading vote-getter with 619,539 votes. Jesse Winker (.306 - 11 HR - 34 RBI) is currently leading a very close race for the starting spot in LF with 539,664 votes. The Dodgers' Max Muncy (.269 - 16 HR - 35 RBI) is in second with 533,358 votes. Sonny Gray (6-2, 3.29 ERA - 75 K) is currently fourth in the voting amongst starting pitchers with 334,372 votes. The Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw (7-0, 2.29 ERA - 84 K) is the leading vote-getter with 439,593. The overall vote leader is the Padres' Manny Machado (.378 - 12 HR - 36 RBI) with 756,465 votes. Re: Redleg Nation - A Cincinnati Reds Experience (OOTP 22)
Brewers score late, top Reds 12-7. It was a tale of two halves for the Cincinnati Reds. After five innings, the Reds were on cruise control and leading 6-0. Down the stretch, however, the Brewers outscored the Reds 12-1 as the pitching staff completely imploded and the Brewers bullpen locked down the Reds. The comeback began in the 6th inning when Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia took a Wade Miley fastball deep into the left-field bleachers for a three-run homer to make it a two-run game at 6-4. In the 8th inning, the Brewers lit up Reds setup man Tejay Antone. Antone was charged with four runs, more runs than he had given up in his previous 12 relief appearances, as the Brewers took a 10-7 lead. The Brewers tacked on two more runs in the 9th inning to put the exclamation point on the titanic struggle. The Reds chased Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff out of the game in the fourth inning. Woodruff gave up six runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings of work. He walked four and struck out six on 84 pitches in the no-decision. Unfortunately, the Reds were unable to do much against the Brewers bullpen, only getting a run on three hits over the final five innings. Reds starter Wade Miley was on cruise control until the 6th inning and then was chased from the game in the 7th inning. Miley was charged with six runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work. He walked four and struck out two on 103 pitches in the no-decision. Notable Performances 1. Christian Yelich (MIL) -- 4-for-6, 2 2B, RBI, 3 R 2. Joey Votto (CIN) -- 3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R 3. Yuli Gurriel (MIL) -- 2-for-4, 3B, 2 RBI, 3 R, BB
Reds fall below .500 for first time since April The Reds got off to a promising start in the first inning with Christian Colon singling from the leadoff position and Eugenio Suarez hitting his 12th home run of the season to spot the Reds an early 2-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Reds, this was not Luis Castillo's night and a grand slam in the second inning by Brewers' 3B Jace Peterson would put the Reds in an early hole. Castillo only lasted three innings, giving up five runs on five hits. He walked three and failed to register a strike out on 83 pitches. Brewers starter Josh Lindblom would also not factor into the decision, giving up five runs on five hits in 5.2 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three on 97 pitches. The Reds bullpen redeemed themselves after yesterday's meltdown, giving up one run to the Brewers in the 6th inning. The Reds pulled to within a run after a two-run shot by Nick Castellanos to make it a 6-5 game. In the ninth inning, Mike Moustakas would take Brewers closer, Devin Williams, deep to tie the game up at 6. The Reds would get the potential winning run into scoring position with only one out in the inning but were unable to advance Nick Senzel. Reds closer Lucas Sims would enter the game in the 10th inning, and on his second pitch, gave up a solo home run to Brewers superstar Christian Yelich. Obviously rattled, Sims served up another BP quality fastball, this time to Yuli Gurriel, to give the Brewers the 8-6. The Reds did not threaten in the 10th inning. The Reds' losing streak now sits at four games and they are 4-11 in their last 15 games. Notable Performances 1. Jace Peterson (MIL) -- 3-for-5, HR, 5 RBI, R 2. Yuli Gurriel (MIL) -- 3-for-5, 2B, HR, RBI, 3 R 3. Eugenio Suarez (CIN) -- 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R, BB
Brewers sweep Reds; Reds drop 5th straight The Brewers took the lead in the first inning and never looked back as the Brewers swept the Reds with a 5-3 victory. Freddy Peralta, whose start was pushed up a day, left the Reds spinning in the dirt. Peralta gave up one run on four hits in seven innings of work. He walked three and struck out nine on 108 pitches to take his record to (4-3). Ryan Merritt wasn't horrible but pitched under duress for most of the game. Merritt gave up four runs (two earned) on ten hits in 6.1 innings of work. He walked one and struck out four on 110 pitches to drop his record to (1-4). The Brewers have run their winning streak to four games while the Reds have dropped five straight. Notable Performances 1. Freddy Peralta (MIL) -- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K 2. Ryan Merritt (CIN) -- 6.1 IP, 10 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K 3. Yuli Gurriel (MIL) -- 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R *** MLB Headlines 6/08 -- Twins' LF Luis Arraez (.303, 2 HR, 19 RBI) goes 5-for-6 with 2 RBIs in a 21-8 victory over the Yankees. 6/09 -- Dodgers' SP Walker Buehler (3-0, 2.93) is expected to miss six weeks with a strained shoulder. 6/11 -- Royals' SP Daniel Lynch (3-5, 6.10) is expected to miss 11-12 months with a torn UCL in the elbow.

Re: Redleg Nation - A Cincinnati Reds Experience (OOTP 22)
Rockies edge Reds 5-4 Cincinnati got a decent performance from starter Tyler Mahle, but Lucas Sims making his third appearance in four days seemed to be too much as the Rockies scored two in the 9th to extend the Reds' losing streak to six. With two outs in the 9th, pinch hitter Greg Bird was able to bloop a base hit into short left field that landed in between Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez, plating two runs. The Reds were able to get the tying run into scoring position with Tucker Barnhart hitting a one-out double. Unfortunately, Suarez flew out and Joey Votto struck out to end the threat. Notable Performances Tyler Mahle (CIN) -- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K Ryan McMahon (COL) -- 1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, R, BB Joshua Fuentes (COL) -- 3-for-4, 2B, R
Gray, Colon snap six-game losing streak The nearly 30,000 in attendance at Great American Ballpark witnessed the Reds get back in the win column, as Sonny Gray played the role of stopper. Gray gave up four runs in seven innings of work as the Reds bats woke up in style in an 8-4 victory. Christian Colon's second-inning grand slam was the exclamation point for the Reds' offense, as only one player failed to reach base tonight. The Reds chased Rockies starter, German Marquez, out of the game in the 3rd inning, after he gave up seven runs on eight hits. However, the Rockies' bullpen was able to hold the Reds' offense to one unearned run the rest of the night. The Reds' overworked bullpen desperately needed Gray to go deep tonight, and he very much obliged. However, the Rockies began chipping away at the Reds' lead, shrinking the deficit from eight to four runs by the end of the 7th inning. Despite it not being a save or hold situation, setup reliever Tejay Antone came into the game and slammed the door shut over the final two innings. Antone struck out all six hitters he faced, only needing 28 pitches to do so. Late heroics propel Rockies ahead of Reds 4-3 David Bell left Wade Miley in for one pitch too long. Brendan Rodgers' hammered a clutch two-run homer in the 8th inning to put the Rockies up for good. The much-maligned Rockies' bullpen once again shut the Reds' offense down, giving up no hits over the final three innings. Jesse Winker had a big game but was left frustrated by the final results. "I'd rather have the win," said the Reds right fielder. Miley had his best start in a month but was unable to avoid picking up his third straight loss. Miley, who has gone five starts without a win, gave up four runs on nine hits in 7.2 innings of work. He walked three and struck out six on 108 pitches. Notable Performances 1. Re: Redleg Nation - A Cincinnati Reds Experience (OOTP 22)
TEAM NEWS The Reds are slumping, and the pitching can carry most of the blame. While the offense continues to rank very highly in the National League, the pitching has been really in a funk of late. Those are some ugly numbers. Comparing last season's rotation FIP numbers to this year tells the tale...
FIP is up all across the board. The Reds failed to replace Trevor Bauer adequately or even Anthony DeSclafani (who was plagued by injury last year). Gray, Castillo, and Mahle's numbers are all down across the board. The Reds were hopeful a now healthy Wade Miley would bounce back from last season, but that is not the case. Can the ship be righted? There's still plenty of time to turn things around, but a 3-9 mark so far in June is leaving fans feeling the blues. The one glimmer of hope is that the Reds bullpen has been getting the job done more often than not. If the rotation could stop getting them into a hole early on, this team has the potential to do something this season. Other Headlines -- In our latest All-Star Game balloting update, 1B Joey Votto (.300 - 11 HR - 36 RBI) currently ranks 3rd amongst NL first basemen with 758,941 votes.
