MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

On another plus, the signature swings (and Griffey's stance) look soooo good! Jerseys are actually getting some crimping and wrinkle.

Love it so far!

Yes on Roberto Alomar. Looks like they also might have Jackie Robinson?

I fully expect Javier Baez to sometimes go into that home run trot, only for it to not go over the fence.

That was about the most underwhelming trailer I have ever seen.

Honestly, with my time schedule 17 just got a pass.

I'll come back when these guys step up the graphics department and do some research on how fields and players are supposed to look in real life.

Seeing those same ridiculously lame grass patterns and coloring is honestly way too much for me to care anymore.

The shoulders on some of the models in that video were also just OMG. I can barely tell the difference from PS3 at times. Whatever. I hope the game does well. I don't have the time.

I know some people will be mad and angry that someone doesn't love this but I really don't care.

Looks like some sort of Statcast feature is in there. Nice touch.

They need to release the retro game mode early. I'd love to play that thru the winter!

Okay, not that it's any of my business but is MythicalGnome = ZealousMonkey = khronikos?

EDIT: Nevermind, my question may have just been answered. I do wish for greater detailed ground textures as well, especially if the Pro handles things smoothly enough in 4K. Either way, there are still visual jumps there that I'm pretty excited about.

I actually watched the trailer while proctoring SAT's (don't worry, only two students left and they're being well-monitored haha), but that means I didn't get any audio. Did they tease any of the Retro Mode music in that part of the trailer? If so, any linking to Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball (SNES)?

Could this possibly be a Create-A-Team option??

Looks like we may have some improved groundball physics in bounce and how they track.

I love the names on the batting helmets!

And also in the opening few seconds..........."You're killing me Smalls!" I busted up on that one

Then add the Wild Thing haircut from Major League? They had fun with this one.......

My .02 of the trailer... new celebrations, new animations (like when your major league talent corner infielders just can't stop a grounder), beef up diamond dynasty (cause look at the dough fut and mut make), a novelty act called retro mode, and a few more legends. Hopefully game play is improved, things like rainouts and rescheduled games are added, and uniform errors and slots are corrected (which I doubt. Textures look same). As a franchise geek, I am willing to bet it's more or less a roster update with a few celebrations. It looks like resources were focused on casual gamers (retro) and dd players. Hopefully I will see more as march approaches. My gut tells me I'm dead on though

New create-a-player hairstyles finally. Looks like a lot of added player personality/emotion building off of last year, and there were a couple shots of hits down the line so i'm wondering if that is the dev team showing that the no 2Bs down the line has been fixed (although only one of those grounders actually tailed into foul territory). That has been a pet peeve of mine with the game for a while.
