9/28 vs. #21 TCU

Dunn does it again as BYU smokes #21 TCU
BYU Football News

BYU continued their winning streak over TCU with a 56-24 thrashing at home to open conference play. Senior QB Will Dunn threw for 324 yards and 5 TDs and the Cougar defense was outstanding to help BYU overcome a 17-14 deficit and roll to victory.

TCU, which had dominated the Mountain West for years before Coach Borland came to BYU, has now suffered 3 tough losses to the Cougars. This one has to be the toughest one, as the Horned Frogs allowed BYU to score 35 unanswered points in the 2nd half to pull away for the win.

Dunn and BYU actually got off to a rough start in the game before turning it around. Dunn threw an interception on BYU's 1st drive and the Horned Frogs capitalized on it with a 49-yard TD run from RB Christian Mangiero to put TCU up early 10-0. BYU answered back when sophomore RB Tim Brewer took a handoff and raced 45 yards for a score to cut the lead to 10-7.

In the 2nd quarter, Dunn led the Cougars on an 18-play, 94-yard drive that took up the majority of the quarter and capped it off with a 9-yard TD pass to senior WR Bryan Williams to give BYU a 14-10 lead. BYU got a defensive stop, but Dunn made a costly mistake on the ensuing drive. Dunn tried to fire a short pass to sophomore WR Ross Hill on 3rd down, but it was intercepted by TCU DE Adam Johnson, who returned it 25 yards for a TD and a 17-14 lead.

Dunn shook off the mistake fast though, as he found Hill on the next drive for a huge 68-yard catch-and-run TD to put BYU back up 21-17 just before the half.

The 3rd and 4th quarter belonged to the Cougars, as Dunn threw 3 TD passes, including 2 more to Hill, and BYU got TD runs from Brewer and backup QB John Crews to put the game out of reach at 56-17. TCU scored on a late kickoff return to account for the final score.

Dunn had a great day in leading BYU's 2nd Top 25 upset in the last 3 weeks. The senior Heisman candidate threw for 324 yards and 5 TDs on 22-of-34 passing and was picked off twice. Dunn also added 42 yards rushing.

Dunn's main targets on the day was Williams, who totaled 126 yards and a TD, and Hill, who ended up with 129 yards and 3 scores. Sophomore TE Richard Meyer caught his 1st TD of the season on the 1st play of the 4th quarter. Brewer had a surprisingly good workworse-type of a game against one of the nation's best run defenses, piling up 124 yards on 31 carries and 2 TDs.

The BYU defense was awesome against the Horned Frogs. The Cougars held #21 TCU to only 208 total yards, only 8 first downs and forced 5 turnovers, including 4 interceptions on QB Marlin Thomas.

BYU hits the road next week to take on San Diego State. The Cougars beat the Aztecs 45-28 last season.
