NHL Competition Committee; new rules

http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2013/6/4...id-icing-nhlpa

Surprised not to see a thread about this. So as the article above mentions, the NHL Competition Committee is going to review a number of rules, the biggest being that it has recommended to grandfather visors.

I think this should have been done awhile ago.

Are they talking about going to the hybrid, race to the dots? I don't mind that at all. Sucks when someone gets hurt from crashing into the boards trying to touch the puck.

They have hybrid icing in college hockey and I think it works just fine. Chances are, if you don't beat them to the dots you're not going to beat them to the puck.

I demand deeper nets, just to be contradictory.

I like hybrid icing. As someone who attends college games frequently, you don't even notice the difference. It's basically the same play you have now while greatly reducing the chances of crashing into the boards in an awkward position at high speed.

I can see the argument for hybrid icing, and I wouldn't be that upset if they changed it. I personally like the mad dash back to the puck and the mini-drama that comes from seeing if the offensive player can eke out a touch before the D-man, and it involves more than just flat-out speed so it's fun to watch. But I understand it's a hazardous play in many regards, and there are good reasons to ditch it. Personally, I think it's more dangerous having the trapezoid behind the net where the goalie can/can't legally play the puck, because that seems to lead to many more (frequently unforseen) mad dashes and dangerous plays behind the net as defensemen try to get back and play a puck just out of the restricted area.

I am okay with mandatory visors, though. It always makes me nervous when guys are out there blocking shots without the eye protection (although how much it saves you if you've got Zdeno Chara cranking one at 109 mph right at your dome is debateable....).

Re: NHL Competition Committee; new rules

The whole visors thing should've been implemented after Bryan Berard more or less lost a ton of vision in one of his eyes in 2000.

As for hybrid icing I have no feeling one way or another towards it. The 4 minute high sticking review might be interesting though I fear it might lead to the game being lengthened.

I'm surprised that the Scotty Bowman proposed idea regarding the puck over the boards penalty isn't being discussed. Basically he says that if a team is already penalized they shouldn't be be two men down but rather tack the puck penalty on after the initial penalty.

Re: NHL Competition Committee; new rules

Did anyone read Matthieu Schneider's comments on how they're looking at reducing not only goalie equipment, but skaters equipment as well?

“Look at the (New York) Rangers lineup. You’ve got five guys making kick saves. They’ve got extra equipment on their skates, on their gloves … Essentially, what we’ve done is given guys equipment so they can safely block shots with any area of their body.”
I've read that Tortorello was working first-hand with equipment manufacturers to reinforce several pieces of equipment to prevent injuries from blocking shots.

In my perfect world, I'd love for the NHL to force Dryden-esque slim goalie equipment on the goalies and then outlaw composite sticks.
