I honestly don't know what they can do with Marner. Very much doubt he'll waive his NMC unless it's a very specific location (Cup contender, someone who will offer him a big extension, etc.). Someone like the Kings might take him... in exchange for PLD's contract.
Even if they lose the deal they have to deal Marner.

He's absolutely asking for Matthews like money. Meanwhile the Leafs could go out and sign two guys for around 6-8m for the price Marner will want.

As much as people hate on Tavares, if his next deal is a hometown discount/final contract before he retires type of thing and he goes for half of his current salary at most, they absolutely should keep him too, but that's a next offseason issue.

Even though he's their best dman, they should look at moving Rielly too. If you want major shakeup, Rielly and Marner going would do just that and sends the hard message to the team that it's not about friends or sticking to a group, win or changes will happen. It was unpopular at the time but Raptors doing that with DeRozan was needed.

Pain again for the Leafs, damn. At least it was quick.

Tavares should not be re-signed at any price. One goal and an assist in the playoffs this season. Not sure how he gets such a free ride for his lacklustre playoff performances every year. That money is better spent elsewhere.

It's pretty funny the Leafs brought in Ryan Reaves on a three-year contract to provide them with a rougher edge in the playoffs and in year one of the contract, he was scratched in Game 7.

35 year old Tavares at 3-4m as a 3rd line C wouldn't be bad to have at all.

Except that's a fantasy. Joe Pavelski's a similar comp to Tavares and got 3x7 from Dallas as a 35-year-old back in 2019 when the cap was under 80M. Right now the cap is projected to be 92M in summer 2025.

This is why MLSE should clear them all out - Shanahan, Treliving, Keefe. Treliving aside, who thought signing Reaves for 3 years (or at all) made sense? Don Cherry? Jim Benning?

Watching the ESPN feed of CAR/NYR and the 1st goal was completely missed because of McDonough and Ferraro just nattering nonstop. Bob Cole is rolling in his grave.

That's the tough part about Shanahan. His "Shanaplan" failed, but this team is still so much better than the pathetic years from 07-15.

They could easily go back to those dark days of no playoffs, no draft picks, and spending all their money on the David Clarksons and Nathan Hortons of the league while Vesa Toskala is your #1.

There's no world where Keefe should be brought back. He's not only sucked and been out coached (when you lose so often at home, especially in the playoffs, you have to look to the coach who is doing a bad job matching lines with the last change), you also have a pool of coaches who aren't on an NHL team right now who would be way better options.
