I don't know if that number is right or not, but it depends on when that number is calculated. If its at the beginning of the year, then a lot of that money is used by the end as people get bonuses and contracts are extended to use any left over money. Very few teams actually leave money under the cap by the time the year is done.

Good article.
Quote:
• Goodell referred to Michigan tackle Jake Long's five-year, $57.75 million contract -- with $30 million guaranteed. Long was the first overall draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in April.

"He doesn't have to play a down in the NFL and he already has his money," Goodell said. "Now, with the economics where they are, the consequences if you don't evaluate that player, you can lose a significant amount of money. ... And that money is not going to players that are performing. It's going to a player that never makes it in the NFL. And I think that's ridiculous."

The commish was all smiles on draft day, but he now calls guaranteed money for rookies like Jake Long "ridiculous."
So, Roger, you think Long is going to be a bust? The Dolphins don't, which is why they signed him before draft day. And during Long's introductory news conference, Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland actually praised and thanked Long's agent for his help during the negotiations.

"This is about picking the best football player, in my opinion," Ireland said. "I think that's what we've done here. The economics do come into it, but that's not part of the discussion for today."

Buyer remorse? Doesn't sound like it.
I'd rather not read the rest of the article after that. Wojciechowski clearly doesn't understand Goodell's point.

So basically those numbers aren't representative. That's pretty much the very beginning of the year. Notice they are 2008 numbers not "end of 2007 season" numbers. It's the cap space teams have to work with for the next season. So p_rushing's point about performance bonuses applies to your number.

On top of that, in March, players whose contracts are up and have not yet resigned are not part of the cap numbers for the next year. Obvisouly, FAs that will be signed during the offseason are not on the cap number yet as they aren't signed yet and obviously no rookies are signed since the draft has yet to happen. When you said "unspent cap dollars" I thought your point was that there were 400 million in cap space that teams do not use at all. Maybe I misunderstood as I haven't followed the whole thread.

Yuh a rookie shouldnt come in making so much money because what if he doesnt live up to the hype. He has to be able to come in and prove himself.

This is what Robert Smith and Chris Mortensen said on Mike and Mike morning show. There are quite a few teams that don't come close to reaching their cap number. Smaller market teams struggle because of their tight budget.

Re: L.T-For the Rookie Cap. Reggie Bush Against the Rookie Cap

Much of the free space is due to the gigantic increases in the cap the last couple of years (a little over 30 million in just three years).
