MLB Off-Topic

Figured it was about time we start this...

Re-post from the 2013 thread:

Apparently Tanaka has added Chicago to his ideal destinations, and the Cubs are "major players". Someone said they'd "be surprised if [the Cubs] don't get him".

Would love to have Tanaka in Chicago. I think he would be a good fit.

Interestingly Al Leiter did a comparison of Tanaka to Hiroki Kuroda. Obviously Tanaka has better stuff and that splitter is amazing but I wonder if playing in Wrigley would hurt his numbers a bit.

Does anyone know what his career fly ball to ground ball ratio was in Japan?

I'm watching the 30 for 30 about fantasy baseball, and it's incredibly fun and amusing. Maybe in my Top 5 30 for 30s.

So recently the Washington Nationals made a pitch to their local government about putting a roof on nationals park.

Don't get why MLB Network wants to assign a "face of the franchise" to each team so badly....

https://twitter.com/MLBNetwork

Just like how ESPN tries to hard to assign a face of MLB and stuff. Trying to figure out who is the posterboy of MLB.

I think it's just a fun thing to do during the offseason. Baseball is one of those sports where there really isn't one transcendent star to carry the banner of the entire sport.

Anywho, i'm sure Jose Bautista will be voted the Face of the Blue Jays. (if they haven't done them yet)

I picked up Sports Illustrated's Baseball's Greatest, and they love Pete Rose. #12 1B, #10 3B, #12 LF, #7 RF, and #12 base runner. And they have Alex Rodriguez as the #7 SS of all-time, and the #16 3B.

Ya, Bautista is gonna be named face of Jays. I just wish everyone realized there's more than just Bautista in Toronto. MLB The Show for example,he's been cover boy for multiple years(and a chance he could be cover boy again in 2014), even though there's many other players they also could've had on the cover like Lawrie(mostly cause he's a Canadian on the Jays) or Reyes(another huge fan fave) among others.

I know covers don't mean anything(especially since the in game graphic is still same as USA),but just makes me wonder if that's the general perception of the team from USA, that Bautista is basically the entire team.

Every time I personally think of the Blue Jays, I think of the Marlins trade, the night we won Yu Darvish, and those sweet jerseys and beautiful cobalt blue.

I also think of O Canada and Molson, but that's a little over the top.

No no, it has to be Labatt's. :google:

BTW most of his views should be anathema to me but i'm really loving Brian Kenny's Clubhouse Confidential show. He does a good job of selling the SABR side of things.

Yeah he does a great job with that show, but he pushes the SABR stuff hard. I enjoy advanced metrics, but there is something to be said about the non measureable stuff too.

I'm watching Yu Darvish's almost Perfect Game. He made it 8 2/3 innings. Then gave up 2 hits before closing it out.

I grew up watching him manage those Oakland A's teams and let me tell you, they WERE feared. It was also in Oakland that he really developed the micromanaging and bullpen management that is the hallmark of his career.

I actually applaud La Russa for wanting to go in with a blank baseball cap.

Did someone say Tony La Russa?

And speaking of Chicago, and Hall of Fame, and caps, and plaques, and no logos, and other stuff, Greg Maddux will not have a logo on his cap on his plaque.

Wow La Russa looks so silly!

Interesting that Maddux opted not to have a logo on his cap. His reasoning seems sound I guess but really I don't think Cubs fans would go up in arms if he went in as a Brave.

My favorite part of the La Russa picture is who's interviewing him.

This man is my hero!

I have a great appreciation and love for that stadium so seeing this was pure joy. This must've cost an arm and a leg to do though.

Pitcher protective hats were approved by MLB today but they aren't "major league ready" yet according to Brandon Mccarthy. Too thick, too heavy, too hot. To noticeable basically. He won't wear one.

So who won the World Series in 2013? I honestly don't remember. I haven't followed the league in quite some time.

Frankly, I blame it on the Cubs/Padres game I was forced to witness live in person in Chicago in 2012. And the Show being exclusive to Playstation.

I've watched 2 random games involving the Mets, and in both of them they are wearing their blue alternate jerseys. They NEED to be in The Show this year.

Also, I'm almost positive Vin Scully could commit multiple crimes in LA, and he'd get off.

SPTO 01-31-2014 11:50 AM

re: MLB Off-Topic

Speaking of Scully, he'll be calling the opening series in Australia! A part of me worries a bit about that what with the long trip, time zone differences and such it could take a LOT out of him at his age.

All that separates me from sweet, sweet spring baseball is the state of New Mexico. But I just can't afford to make the trip.

Gotcha. It is about a 6 hour drive for us. This year will be our 4th year in row that we will travel to AZ to see the Pads...

I've got credit with Southwest that needs to be used by the end of March. I'm kicking around the idea of using it on a quick spring training weekend. My girlfriend however is trying to convince me to use it towards Jamaica. Southwest starts flying there and Carribean this summer.

I'll def go this year as I do every year. I used to live in Phoenix and I have gone to a game at every Cactus league park in AZ (I miss AZ). I'll probably go catch the Dodgers spring opener in Glendale. I'll def go to big league weekend here in Vegas as well when the Cubs play the Mets.
