Rumor: Walker 'Loves' Alphonso Davies

Bayern Munich Left Back Alphonso Davies is one of Thomas Walker's Favorite Players in the World

Alphonso Davies has emerged as one of the bright young stars in World Football (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Rumors – Sources have confirmed with RedDevilUnited.com that Bayern Munich fullback Alphonso Davies is Thomas Walker’s favorite player in the world. Walker and Davies share a nationality -- Canadian -- and the two seem to be a perfect fit in terms of play style. Alphonso Davies has been one of the most promising young players in the world, starring for one of the top clubs in Europe from the left back position. Perhaps what has caught the eye of Thomas Walker is Davies’ incredible performances for the Canadian National Team, where he gets a chance to really show his versatility and talent.

Does this mean Davies will end up at Manchester United? It seems unlikely. Davies is entrenched as a bright young star for Bayern Munich and has the potential to achieve all his goals from there. Davies just turned 21 in early November and has the tools to be an absolute super star at any level. Davies is simply put one of the fastest players in the world and can provide effortless pace on offense and defense.

Davies grew up in the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy in the MLS, where he made his senior team debut in 2016 at the age of sixteen. After two seasons with Vancouver, he was bought by Bayern Munich for USD$13.5M (£10 million), where he began earning first team minutes at only eighteen years old. Since then Davies has put in 70 appearances for the German Giants and an additional thirty caps with the Canadian National Team. In April 2020, Bayern Munich extended Davies contract through the 2024-2025 season.

With that contract situation, it’s unlikely United will be interested in making a play for Davies any time soon. Still, for Bayern, Davies makes a reported £70,000 per week, which is paltry compared to what he could make at United.

RedDevilUnited.com talked to an anonymous scout about what Davies would look like at Old Trafford. “To be clear, I don’t think it’s going to happen,” said the scout, “but if it did, it would add an electric playmaker to a United side that seems to love scoring. Davies has world class pace, and I think [United Coach Thomas] Walker loving him is an indication that Walker loves guys with that electric pace.”

Transfermarkt lists his value at £65 million, but most believe it would take an offer of well over £100 million to get Bayern to think about parting with Davies. Perhaps, at that price, Davies is only a name to keep in the notebook for now, but United will look to make a few splashes next summer and he could be a guy they look in to.

Groaning in Manchester

Thomas Walker faces his first criticisms as United Manager

By Felix Short | October 17, 2021, 7:41 AM EST

United Boss Thomas Walker was forced to watch his team be outclassed on Saturday. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – It’s official. Manchester United boss Thomas Walker made it until the middle of October before United fans began calling for his head. That’s now changed after yesterday’s embarrassing 5-0 defeat at King Power Stadium in Leicester. With the loss Manchester United falls to eighth in the league table with just thirteen points, far out of view of title-chasing Chelsea. This comes after another embarrassing loss to Aston Villa, 3-0, on September 25th, in which United was again blown out, that time at Old Trafford in front of the home fans.

“He’s in over his head, I think,” said ESPN’s Steve Nicol, “I don’t think there’s any other way to put it. He’s not good enough for Manchester United.”

This seemed to be the general sentiment around the United Twittersphere as well, as the first chorus to sack Thomas Walker began to be sung. Walker is only eleven games into his tenure but has only managed thirteen points in United first eight league games, compiling a 4-1-3 record, which includes two embarrassing losses.

The invective was made more piercing because of the way in which United lost, all but forfeiting the games in the second half by using substitutions on youngsters that weren’t ready to lead a comeback. Thomas Walker has spoken after the game about the long-term vision, but that does nothing to quell the irritation of United fans that have never been sold on his hiring.

What makes the early season more frustrating is that United has yet to play any of the other big six teams in the Premier League this year, and they’re watching Chelsea run away with first place. Thomas Teuchel’s squad now boasts 24 points and a perfect record through the first eight match days. Manchester United will play continental soccer before facing Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City in back-to-back-to-back Premier League games.

United Win in Switzerland

Manchester United Earned their Third Win in the Champions League Group Stage

By Felix Short | October 19, 2021, 11:59 PM EST

Bern, Switzerland – Manchester United defeated BSC Young Boys in the third match of the UEFA Champions League Group Stage Tuesday night, 3-1. Manchester United controlled the game throughout and earned their third straight win in the continental competition, just three days after being smacked at home by Leicester City.

If there was any hangover from the 5-0 beat down that Leicester City delivered the Red Devils, it was felt early as Young Boys were able to take an early 1-0 lead. Young Boys caught United out on the counter attack, Eric Bailly got caught out of position, and Christopher Martins went front side post for the goal in the 12th minute. United’s transition defense was poor, and it was a poor effort from David De Gea. To that point United has already created a few chances, and they dominated the game from this point out. Cristiano Ronaldo tied the game five minutes later after Jadon Sancho gave a tremendous transition ball to the field, allowing Ronaldo to run to the ball with a one-on-one with the keeper. Ronaldo nailed a low shot to the bottom left corner for his seventh goal in three Champions League games.

Ronaldo struck again in the second half, this time manipulating the entire Young Boys defense to the right, before switching the field to Marcus Rashford, who put the ball in the back of the net in the 52nd minute. As part of that play Jadon Sancho did come up limping and was replaced by Anthony Martial. It wouldn’t make a difference. United sealed the deal in the 71st minute after Rashford crossed the ball to Ronaldo for the header. Ronaldo connected, but an acrobatic save by Young Boys goalkeeper David von Ballmoos kept it out of the net for just a split second. The ball bounced to the feet of Paul Pogba who proceeded to give United the 3-1 lead they would carry over the finish line.

“The boys balled out today,” said winning-side manager Thomas Walker, “I feel like we really needed to bounce back, but I had no doubt that we would. This is a great collection of guys and they’re just working hard and they’re just going to keep moving forward. We like where we sit in this competition, but we have no intention of taking the foot off the pedal.”

United suffered two injuries in the game, and that will be something to monitor over the next few days. Sancho collided with a Young Boys defender during the sequence that led to United’s second goal. He had to leave the game. Fred also came up limping after being landed on awkwardly in the 71st minute. United had used its substitutes at that point though, so Fred had to limp around for the rest of the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo went down as man of the match after scoring his seventh goal of the competition. He also added an assist, as he continues to prove he is one of the best players in the world.

Manchester United and Young Boys will meet again in their next Champions League game on November 3rd in Manchester. Villarreal and Atalanta tied 3-3 tonight, so the current standings see United on top with nine points, Villarreal in second with four points, Young Boys in third with three points, and Atalanta in fourth with one point.

Manchester United will host Liverpool on Sunday for the first of back-to-back matchups between the two giants of English soccer. Sunday’s game will count for the Premier League, while next week’s game in Liverpool is part of the EFL Cup.

Re: United.

Juan Mata Unhappy with Situation

The Veteran Spanish Midfielder Has Found His Role Smaller than Expected this Season

By Felix Short | October 20, 2021, 7:41 AM EST

Juan Mata has been a key contributor for Manchester United over the past decade. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Rumors are beginning to surface that Juan Mata is growing increasingly frustrated with his situation at Manchester United. These rumors were most strongly substantiated this morning when insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Spaniard isn’t happy at Old Trafford.

“Player is not happy,” said Romano’s tweet, “Player doesn’t feel like he fits in with current United squad or style. Looking to leave and doesn’t feel like his career is over.”

Mata, who is now 33 years old, has only made one appearance this season, which came off the bench in a 3-0 defeat against Aston Villa. Mata came on with 18-year-old Hannibal Mejbri in the 65th minute, which signaled to the fans that United was not going to be pushing for a comeback. Mata also did not feature in United’s 7-1 win over Portsmouth in the EFL Cup.

Further questions exist about Mata’s fit under Thomas Walker, who has repeatedly shown his desire to have athletic, high energy, and young players run his system, characteristics that do not fit Mata’s profile.

Player movement insiders have indicated there would be interest in Juan Mata if United were to put him up for sale in January. With Mata’s contract expiring next summer, any move would be of low cost, but those insiders believe Mata would still translate well in either the Bundesliga or La Liga as a veteran midfielder who could come in and provide depth and leadership.

Manchester United bought Mata from Chelsea for $50 million (£37.1 million) back in January 2013. He’s gone on to make 189 Premier League appearances (274 total) for United, scoring 51 goals across all competitions. Prior to his move to United, Mata spent two and a half seasons at Chelsea, where he made 135 appearances and scored 33 goals. Mata also spent time at Valencia at the beginning of his career after graduating from the Real Madrid Academy and has earned 41 caps for the Spanish National Team.

Rumor: United Keeping Tabs on Ajax Keeper

Manchester United's Head of Scouting Spotted in Amsterdam, Checking in on André Onana

By Logan Plant / @plantlounited / October 20, 2021, 7:45 AM EST

Ajax's André Onana will be a free agent at the end of this season (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Rumors – Manchester United head scout Marcel Bout was spotted in Amsterdam yesterday at Ajax’s training facility, in what appeared to be a conversation regarding the availability of goalkeeper André Onana. Onana had been one of the premier young goalkeepers in the world prior to a PED charge that cost him most of the last eight months.

It is curious that United would be looking at Onana, who currently isn’t even the top keeper for Ajax after losing his spot during his suspension, while David De Gea has had something of a revitalization this season, returning to top form at Old Trafford.

United also have Dean Henderson, who at 24 likely needs to make a serious decision about his future, and whether it will be at Old Trafford or not. Nevertheless, Onana is a talented goalkeeper, and has shown that over course of the past five seasons, when he did serve as Ajax’s top keeper. The 25-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the 2021-22 season, and it appears likely that he will leave Ajax at the end of the season.

Onana is an alumnus of La Masia, Barcelona’s renowned youth academy, but has been with the Amsterdam side since 2015. He’s spent the last several years being groomed by Erik ten Hag, who is seen as one of the top developers of talent in the world, alongside United’s Thomas Walker.

It’s probably too soon to assume that the Onana rumors are going to lead to anything, and perhaps Bout was simply checking in on Onana while also scouting other Ajax’s youngsters like Antony, Ryan Gravenberch and Edson Álvarez. Still, the interest is worth noting.

Epic Clash Leaves Both Fans Emotional

Manchester United and Liverpool traded blows in an instant classic for the rivalry

By Felix Short | October 24, 2021, 11:59 PM EST

United players were in disbelief when they watched Liverpool tie it in the depths of extra time. (Michael Bradley/Manchester Guardian)

Manchester, England – Manchester United and Liverpool entered Sunday night’s derby as top billing for the weekend, and one of the most anticipated games of the month, and this contest delivered everything everyone could have hoped for. Aside from a victory for either fan base. Still both sides did feel enormous triumph and devastating heartbreak over the course of ninety minutes.

Liverpool’s elite defense entered today’s game having shut out half of their opponents so far this season. Everyone wanted to know if they could shut out the seemingly ageless Cristiano Ronaldo. Liverpool’s constant press and the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson would all make great plays in this game despite the final 3-3 score line.

It was that Liverpool defense that cracked first as Cristiano Ronaldo drove past for a goal in the 8th minute. Heartbreak struck early for United as the goal was called off for offsides, and Bruno Fernandes was hurt on the play after a collision with Fabinho, which left his shoulder unplayable. He was replaced by Paul Pogba. Matters got worse a few minutes later when Liverpool’s offense deconstructed the Untied defense and Naby Keïta put the ball in the back of the net in the 13th minute to open the scoring. Pogba, who had come in after the Fernandes injury, brought United back to even in the 25th minute after a touch and go with Marcus Rashford gave Pogba just enough space to get a shot off. He did, watching a screamer fly right by the outstretched Alisson. After a few impressive displays of stellar one-v-one defense by Virgil van Dijk, the game entered the half tied at one.

Virgil van Dijk wasn’t finished making an impact in this game as a devastating collision in the 48th minute between van Dijk and Paul Pogba left the United midfielder unable to continue. That led to a penalty kick for Ronaldo, who missed. United’s poor transition defense led to an opportunity on the counterattack and Liverpool’s Roberto Firminho found Mo Salah in open space between the center-backs for an easy goal in the 51st minute. The crowd felt Rashford was going to tie it up in the 68th minute after finding open space for the shot, but that would head straight into the body of Edinson Cavani. They felt they were going to tie it again in the 72nd minute when Cavani got an open look that was saved from a miraculous play by Virgil van Dijk. But finally, United broke through in the 74th minute with Ronaldo, as the legend displayed a master class of short area quickness and technique in the heart of the Liverpool defense to find himself an open space to tie the game.

Liverpool’s attack began to take control of the game near the 80th minute, and they earned a corner after a heart stopping sequence that resulted in a great save by David De Gea. The proceeding corner was headed toward the field by Victor Lindelöf and was picked up by the newly introduced Anthony Martial. Martial, with fresh legs, took the ball near the United square, and drove the length of the pitch, past each Liverpool defender and earned a one-on-one with Alisson, that he converted. Glory felt the United fans and they seemed destined to pull out this classic. Heartbreak for Liverpool. But fate was not done yet, and late into extra time, as Liverpool was attacking, the ball found the foot of United center-back Victor Lindelöf, who was under intense pressure and retreating at full speed. As he attempted to clear it, he mi**** the ball, and it landed at the feet of the high-pressuring Liverpool winger James Milner, who had a wide-open shot on goal. He put it away to save Liverpool in the 94th minute, as Liverpool earned the 3-3 draw.

“Devastating,” was the only word that came to the mind of Manchester United coach Thomas Walker after the game.

Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp had more to say, adding, “That was a fun game, but we’re disappointed we didn’t win. But still, I think that’s the kind of game that will be remembered for a long time. It’ll be remembered in this rivalry.”

Manchester United fans, once they recover, will be proud of the defense this team put together. They still lack organizational quality in the back, but their high-level pressure has really come together and has become extremely effective. Tonight, was the best example of the type of suffocating defense that Manchester United expected from a Thomas Walker team, and what they saw in his Lille squad last season. Still, despite the improvement, Manchester United has still given up the most goals in the Premier League this season. That is made worse by two blowouts to Aston Villa and Leicester City, but the point remains the same.

To add injury to insult, Manchester United suffered two shoulder injuries to their top two midfielders, as both Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba were forced to leave Sunday’s game early. Neither situation is considered long-term, but both will likely miss the epic rematch of this game on Wednesday night in Liverpool. As exciting as this game was, the hype for that match up will be even bigger.

After this game, Manchester United sit in 8th in the Premier League with 14 points. Liverpool sits in 5th with 16 points.

Liverpool: 3
Goal Scorers: Naby Keïta (13'), Mo Salah (51'), James Milner (94'); Assists: Roberto Firminho, Thiago

Manchester United: 3
Goal Scorers: Paul Pogba (25'), Cristiano Ronaldo (74'), Anthony Martial (83'); Assists: Marcus Rashford, Victor Lindelöf
