TRANSFER WINDOW OPENS
Everton of the English Premier League opened up the transfer window with a surprising offer to Borussia Monchengladbach that they could not refuse. Everton offered $23.5M for midfielder 27-year-old Lars Stindl, the assist leader in the Bundesliga. Monchengladbach looking at their midfield depth, decided that they could depart with Stindl, and immediately looked for a replacement. Stindl had one goal, five assists and an average rating of 6.70 in 17 appearances for Gladbach in 2015-16.

Rumors have been swirling that Borussia Monchengladbach were looking to the Swiss Super League for a Stindl replacement. They have been seen scouting young FC Basel striker Breel Donald Embolo. They will likely also be looking to add a young keeper to the squad.

You're playing well but you're already nine points off the pace. That's why it's so hard to pick a German team (other than Bayern).

Yes, they are almost impossible to catch. But I like the challenge. Hopefully we can build up a powerful enough squad to compete and knock them off.

Thanks for the check in!

Monchengladbach, North-Rhein-Westphalia (AP) - Borussia Monchengladbach returned from the winter break on a snowy Friday evening and dominated Borussia Dortmund 2-nil at Borussia Park. Thorgan Hazard and Kelechi Iheanacho provided the offense as Gladbach solidified their hold on a Champions League position.

Playing their first match in over a month, the teams were a bit rusty to start. They went to the break scoreless, with each team managing just two shots apiece. But Thorgan Hazard changed that quickly after the half, taking a nice pass from Josip Drmic and beating keeper Roman Burki just two minutes into the second half.

Kelechi Iheanacho then sealed it in the 75th minute with a nice left footed strike into the right side of the net, to make it 2-nil. Gladbach outshot Dortmund 10-2 in the second half.

The Man of the Match was Gladbach's central defender Alvaro Dominguez. He was credited with six interceptions and kept Dortmund at bay the entire match.

Up next for Gladbach (9-6-3, 33 pts) is a trip Mainz to take on FSV Mainz 05 (10-3-6, 33pts). Both teams currently sit tied in third place in the Bundesliga through 18 fixtures.

Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate (AP) - With the winter transfer deadline just a day away, Borussia Monchengladbach went on the road and absolutely hammered FSV Mainz 05. The teams combined for five goals over the final 16 minutes in the match.

Thorgan Hazard is quickly turning himself into one of the top players in the Bundesliga. On Saturday evening, he scored twice and now leads the Bundesliga with 10 goals through 19 fixtures. His goal in the 33rd minute was the lone strike of the opening half.

New acquired Breel Donald Embolo then made an impact in his first match. He was taken down in the box and converted a penalty in the 74th minute to put Gladbach up 2-nil.

FSV Mainz tallied one just five minutes later as Yunus Malli one timed a perfect pass past Tobias Sippel to cut the Gladbach lead in half. But not to worry, Gladbach scored three times over a five minute stretch to make it 5-1. Hirving Lozano scored from the penalty spot after getting knocked down in the box. Thorgan Hazard added his second of the match on a counter attack, and Granit Xhaka finished off the scoring, tapping one past Gianluca Curci in the 90th minute.

The five goals were a season high for Borussia Monchengladbach as they solidified their hold on third place in the Bundesliga. Gladbach (10-6-3, 36 pts) will host Werder Bremen (5-10-4, 25 pts) on Saturday at Borussia Park. Gladbach is now second to only Bayern Munich in goal differential at +21, and they trail the leaders by nine points.
